Hi,

I'm thinking of buying UV, WITP, or WPO and my main interest is solo play and smaller scenarios, so I have some questions.

1) Is the AI updated to the latest release standard ie UV same as WPO?

2) I've read a lot about the mediocore the AI, is it better in small scenarios?

3) Does WITP have the same scenarios as UV? (Thinking about the addon later)

4) Would I be better off with CAW?

Thanks,

John

WitP.....UV is basically the training wheels version of WitP. WPO is a good game too. I have all three and enjoy WitP the most.

I have WPO and WITP.

I opened the WPO box, played the game for 3 hours and went back to WITP...

WPO is SLOW and the naval combat routine in WPO is not as good as the Air to air routine in WITP....

Go for WITP and once AE is released get that "upgrade" for it to..

The AI in all 3 games will leave you with a feeling of wanting more.  It's not the game's fault, but the AI really only makes for decent training.  When you beat the AI on a hard setting then it's time to play a totally new experience, against a human opponent.

UV lacks in scope and control.  When it was new it was great.  The AI is better because of this than it is in WITP.

WITP  has the scope and control of what UV lacked and AE promises more, more, more.

WPO is a slow paced game where combat (naval) happens by accident.  Imagine trying to patrol the Pacific with planes that have a range of almost nothing and ships that can plod along at a blistering 21 knots.  It's a niche game that can be intriguing.

Of course this only reflects my thoughts............

I've ditched WPO, But can't find any scenario lists, can anyone tell me how many UV scenarios are in WITP?

Thanks

John

John,

Buy WITP and then find an email opponent for one of the short scenarios. AI is OK but gets predictable and boring after a while. Plus, you will learn some bad habits from playing it. Get you feet with with WITP and a small scenario against a human. You will never look back.

Look for an new player and learn together.

I am going to have to say honestly, buy all three. I enjoy playing UV when I don't want to dive completely in to managing the whole war and instead trying to run only the SW Pacific Campagin. WitP is for when I do want to the challenge of trying to save Singapore and Ragoon for springboards back into Java and the Philippines and trying to save Wake. With WPO, I enjoy the challenge of having to comply with the original war plans that basically stated the Army would hold the line at Bataan and the Navy would sortie from either Guam or Singapore escorting additional army forces meanwhile having another force attempting to hunt the Japanese Fleet for engagement. Yes WPO has ships that are slower and aircraft that are basically flying kites, but at the same time that is what that time frame entailed. Which were slow ships, for a couple of the scenarios in WPO, that because they weren't designed to be fast steamers, but rather for long ranges.

Regardind the scenario listing for UV:
You have the
A Tutorial op to teach the basics of ampib landings, carrier ops, airbase ops, sub ops, supply ops, etc
Coral Sea May 1 1942 thru the 15th
Battle of Eastern Solomons 21Aug42 thru 31Aug42
Battle of Milne Bay and Kokada track 21Aug42 thru 20Sept42
Four Weeks of Hell 22Oct42 thru 18Nov42 (this one covers the battle of Bloody Rige and Tienuru River and the final attempts of the Japanese to dislodge the 1st MarDiv)
Road to Munda 15Jun43 to 15Aug 43
Operation MO 1May42 to 31Jul42
Turning Tide 1AUG42 thru 31DEC42 (Operation Watchtower)
Green Hell 1Oct42 thru 31Dec42 (Covers the major ground ops to dislodge the Marines)
Stalemate and Counterpunch 15Feb43 thr 15May43 (covers the run up to Lae and the landings on Bouginville)
Summer of 43 15Jun43 to 15Oct43 (further covering ops against rabual)
Operation Cartwheel 15Jun43 to 31Dec43
Begining of the End 1May42 to 31Dec42 (Coral Sea to Guadalcanal)
Fortress Rabual 15Feb43 to 31Dec43 (total time frame of Operation Cartwheel)
Hard Road ahead 1Aug42 to 31Dec43 (Watchtower to end of major combat ops in Solomon Chain)
Clash of the Titans 1Jul42 to 31Dec43 (Post Midway to the end of Major Combat Ops in Solomon Chain)
Yammatos Propchey 1Jun42 to 31Dec43 (this one is a hypothetical in the sense that the scenario may or may not allow for the loses during the Midway operation)
Decision in the South Pacific 1May42 to 31Dec43 (this one is the grand campaign, but is also hypothetical because the game assumes that Midway didn't happen)
South from Rabual 1May42 to 31Dec43 (again a grand campaign, but again hypothetical that assumes the Russians have pulled troops from Siberia earlier and this allows Japanese troops to arrive from China, There is improved pilot training, and finally there is accelerated Japanese Re-enforcement)

Like I said it would be worthwhile to buy all three and find a way to put some time into all of them.

Hi,
How is the AI compared the South Pacific scenario in WitP; the one that runs from May 42 to Feb 43? I am just playing this, and the AI is not too hot (but are they ever?)...just wondering what its like in UV with the latest patch...

Ta,

I've played both WitP and WPO, and they're two different games.  WitP is a game where planes are king and freighters are queens that haul beans and bullets and avgas to keep the planes in the air. Just about everything else is about protecting the planes, their airfields, or the logistics. WPO is the game on the cusp of the new era where planes are still rickety crates that have trouble holding dominance to the horizon so the game turns on surface actions off Wake and Midway or maybe Hawaii.  The WitP experience is much richer because the extra dimension that serious air combat brings to the game, but it does a poor job (at least in an AI campaign) of generating a historical level of surface actions.

I have to say I started with Pacwar in the late eighties, This in turn was replaced by UV when it came out and then came WITP. I must say that I am looking forward to the release of AE later this year (Next month I hope). I must also admit I will not be useing the older versions Once AE comes out.
