I started playing WitP again after some months and now I have a problem, I think I didn't have before.
When playing WitP, at some random point, my pc freezes. Nothing works anymore, not alt+tab, not the task-manager, nothing. The sound seems to be frozen in a loop, repeating the last sound over and over (or the last milliseconds of the music). Only thing I can do then is to press the power button and shut down my pc.

I have no idea why this happens and IIRC, WitP worked fine a few months ago.
I'm using Vista on my Dell Laptop, 2 Ghz Core2Duo with 2 GB RAM and a ATI X1300 graphics card.

Any ideas?

This happens to me now and then. I just mutter and re-start the turn.

It doesn't happen "now an then" for me, but more like every 2-3 hours. I could live with it, if it was once a week or every 50 turns or so. But it happens definitely too often.

Yes, and I can get to task manager. Your problem does seem much more severe. This happens to me rarely. But I usually run a turn in less than 30 minutes so that may be a factor too.

Try renaming your SOUND folder to NOSOUND and see if that cures the problem You will not have any sounds but sounds and codexs have been problems since version 1.0 ( but not so much after about version 1.5 )

Since it is happening now, but apparently didn't happen before, something has apparently changed with your system, maybe due to a Microsoft VISTA automatic upgrade (if you have those turned on) ... a couple of possible solutions spring to mind aside from the one already offered.

1) update all your drivers, esp. sound drivers/video board drivers and codecs.

2) If this doesn't work, consider a rollback of your system to an earlier restore point. Not sure how this works with VISTA (or if it is even possible).

Sound driver problem.

Sound driver problem.

Probably the most likely, although we had one fellow have a similar problem, and it turned out he (or, more likely Microsoft) had somehow loaded 38 or so copies of his codec...

I recommend also to rename the folder VIDEO to NOVIDEO, just in case.
IF it is a driver or codec problem it makes sense to disable both.

Yep - see Nomad's post above.

EDIT: my recommendations above are in case the sound effects are desired... they are not necessary to play the game, but i usually get a kick out of them...

Yesterday, after writing the post and reading some other threads in the forum, I decided to try the windowed mode. Not related to my problem, just wanted to try playing a bit in a window.

But now it seems, I don't have the problem when playing in window mode. No crash in over 10h of playing. Seems like I have to stick to the window mode. But I have no idea, why everything works fine now.

Out of curiosity, if you don't play in windowed mode, does the problem still occur?

I guess so. I didn't change anything, but add a "-w" to the shortcut and now everything runs smoothly. Smoothly and windowed :D

Don't know if that's related to the other problem. But only WitP crashed, just closed and restarted it.

Have you tried renaming your sound folder yet? Sounds and codexs are the biggest cause of crashes for WitP.
