According to Battleship Musashi by Akira Yoshimura, the Bureau of Naval Construction requested that the Musashi's flagship and bridge facilities be expanded. This I was familiar with from other sources, however in this book it also notes that the Bureau added reinforcement of the Mogami turrets due to the lack of armor. Arima was apparently the source of the request but I have seen no other mention of upgraded armor on these turrets. I was wondering if anyone else came across evidence concerning this, since the ship was built under such secrecy it's hard to tell what is true or not due to limited information.

I also find it curious that they suggest it was planned or even done to Musashi but Yamato wasn't considered for this during it's refits.

Not the turrets themselves, but the barbettes were given protection greater than in the Mogamis.

Right, well the book led me to believe that they demanded the turrets themselves be improved. I'll quote it (found on page 123, second to last paragraph):

quote:

Watanabe winced when he saw the order. Two months before, the Bureau of Naval Construction had requested that he move up the original ship's completion date of July 15 by more than one month to June 10. The revisions included the expansion of the flagship and bridge facilities and the reinforcement of the armor covering the auxiliary gun turrets. The main guns on the Mogami-class heavy cruisers had been shifted without modifications to the No. 1 and No. 2 battleships to be used as auxiliary guns. Arima insisted that the armor on the turrets was insufficient for a battleship.

On the next page it states that the revisions cost 2 million yen (the price of a destroyer in 1942) in addition to the price of Musashi. Sadly, no more information as to whether the turrets were actually improved or not.

Garzke & Dulin lists the amor as 50mm rather than 25mm, which would be a useful step up in splinter protection. However, Campbell disagrees, and the Nippon no Senkan "Perfect Guide" disagrees. What does Skulski say?

Skulski says nothing. Akira Yoshimura in "Build the Musashi" quotes his original text as posted above, but follows up by saying two pages later that all of the revisions were completed during May. The inference being that the turret splinter protection was upgraded.

I find this an interesting case mainly because of both ships Musashi seems to be the better kept secret. Mitsubishi seems to have gone to every extreme of protecting it's specifics, I can find much more data on Yamato proper.
