This is got to be one of the all time greatest PC games. It has so much replayability and for those who longed for a Squad Leader this is it!!!!

But will there ever be another design from the ground up??? I worked on a beta several years ago that had a lot of promise but was suddenly shut down. Shame. That game would have kicked a$$.

Anyway, this is one game that will stay on my hard drive forever!!!!

Possibly the bit in red may give you a big hint.

There was some ugly stuff that happened a couple of years ago. After the dust settled, we now have a great player-designed mod (ENH 2009) which is pretty much the best we can hope for. Official version 8.403 of the game engine is the final one.

No use in reinventing the wheel, when this one rolls just fine.  It would be nice to DirectX the game and put up some outstanding graphical changes, but don't think I would like any other changes to the engine at all.

Yeah, but will there ever be a NEW SP type game.  Someone should really consider this.

Don't think it'll happen. I doubt there is enough customer base to make it financially feasible. It would likely need to be an Indie Game Co or individual programmer with a desire to go it alone with minial RoI.

hmm,  I feel like I'd be cheating if I went near those links.  Think I'll stick to what's working just fine.  Matrix and SPWAW Depot FTW!

But the versions on that website won't support what the guys at the Depot have done, right?  Meaning, their scenarios and academy, their Enhanced versions, stuff like that?

The WinSp's are based on the DOS SPWW2 and SPMBT which were mods of Steel Panthers 2, squad level, modern.

SPWAW is a mod based on Steel Panthers 3, platoon level, modern.

All 3 are free download, for basic version. All 3 are fine games. The WinSP's are different than SPWAW and play differently. I enjoy them all and avoid comparing them.

Gotta tell you this: scenarios of the first two SP games (at least the first) can be converted to work with WinSP*. For SPWAW only maps are convertible. Useful tidbit if you happen to have paid scenario disks around

I worked on the team that resurrected that project in '07, and got as far as releasing an alpha.
But that attempt also lost steam; perhaps third time's a charm?

As much as I would love to see a 'son of SP' game I think the above post have hit the nail on the head that there probably is not a market for it. Mainstream developers are looking for cash cows and not dedicated games for a 'small' part of the gaming community.

Who know's perhaps a small crew of enthusiast will set to and make it, but I don't think we will be wanting to hold our breaths while waiting. More the shame

If there ever be heavier update, or even sequel, make sure it is possible to save survivors of given force of given scenario to a file, and use that force with all their experience and stuff in another scenario. Would be neat for ACL

I wonder what ever happened to that, we did the basic OOBs then ....
Posting questions produced no answer either,
I never could get the thing to run on my machine though anyway..

OK, here's the thing: what would you want from a "next generation" SPWaW?  A better whole-war dynamic campaign, with real maps? Yes. Better AI? YES. Let me repeat: a better AI? YES!!!! 3D graphics, with a side-view of the battlefield (a la "Combat Mission"?) Would you be willing to sacrifice gameplay just to get a "prettier" battlefield? Absolutely not. A brand-new Mega Campaign? You betcha.

actually the game is darn good.  my main gripe is the airstrikes are still screwed.  of course more unit types and stuff is always cool but the game plays great. The enhanced mod is great,  cleaned up the oobs, which doesnt sound like much ,  but was alot of work i am sure.  Most other game play pref can be dialed in to your taste.  Truley the game has survived the test of time and for my money is the single best tactical ww2 game made. i do have one idea , i would like to see initiative play a role in the game   ie: units with higher INT would move first.  would add a little wrinkle to the game that is missing.

Mmm, I must say that I'm very pleased with current SPWaW 8.403 (+ Enhanced Mod 2009). But there are small details that I would like to see altered/corrected/added/etc. Just a sidenote, that I do not play scenarios at all nor do I fight against computer; I always play PBEMs with human opponents and thus, my points are coming from there :)

1) Reverse gear for vehicles! This is a MUST.

2) Possibility to issue orders to ground attack aircraft concerning target priority, just a simple button to toggle between 'soft targets' or 'armor'. I'd love to see the ground attack planes strafing/bombing infantry that is advancing in the open :D

Similar possibility to issue orders to give separate targeting priorities or even separate targeting ranges for AT/AA-guns, for 'soft' and 'armor' targets. It is just frustrating to see a prepared ambush being blown away, because that stupid 88mm FlaK commander decided to fire at the reconnoitering Jeep...

3) possibility to destroy AT/AA-guns and MGs in one shot - this was already back in SP1, however, I've never witnessed a gun or MG being destroyed in a single bullseye shot in SPWaW! Very frustrating to destroy some guns, because you have to kill the crew, one by one.

4) Unit/formation databases should allow more units per country. I just hate it when one has to go to Czech OOB to get some more rare German units into play and even then, the units are commanded by inferior Czech leaders.

5) More unit classes, such as shelters/unarmed bunkers. Maybe even some fixed fortification units should have larger field of fire than the regular 120-degrees? (Btw, I've used some fortification classed units (my own modified OOBs) sometimes, to represent sewers and stone building cellars - should not be too difficult to add into the game, as a feature? :P)

Also there might be a need to have more infantry-classes and tracked vehicle classes. In some cases there are 4 squad platoons, that should have 3 squads without automatic weapons and one squad with automatic weapon. If both squad types are designated as "medium infantry" (for example), you can end up with 'unrealistic' company where all the squads have automatic weapons. Easy workaround would be to have several but similar classes, such as "medium infantry 1", "medium infantry 2", etc.

6) max formation/max units per side during a battle should be greater than current max values 100/400 (IIRC). At the moment the game allows even app. brigade sized battles, in most cases this is enough, but sometimes larger battles would be nice :)

7) PBEM-campaigns ; geez, this is something that I've been longing for a long time and actually, I've tried some 'manual' version of PBEM campaigns where we have played sequential battles, taking into account the result and losses of previous battle. This is cumbersome and impractical...

8) Maps larger (wider) than current max of 100 hexes.

9) In the terrain, I'd like to see more height variations, than 0 to 30 (like in SPWW2).

10) Maybe some modification should be done with game generated random maps - at the moment these tend to be way too similar. Just take certain time and opponents, take a random map and behold - almost everytime you'll end up with fairly similar map. Sometimes there might be a stream, sometimes a railroad, but the general layout of the map is almost always the same = boring. In SP1, there was much more variation and in those days, one could have played PBEMs w/ random maps all the time. In SPWaW, I've given up the random maps, I'd rather make a new map myself.

11) Graphical updates - the standard resolution tends to be somewhat coarse nowadays, as many of us have already around 1920x1440 desktop.

So, here are 10 points that popped into my mind, that I think are the 'major' things that bug me in SPWaW...there might be more, but as said, these are the ones that came first into my mind :P

Oh, and just to mention - if someone thinks that I'm overly critical, please do not take this that way. In my opinion, SPWaW is THE WW2 tactical level wargame - I've been playing this game from the christmas 1995 and I absolutely love the game. There have been many games after SP series started, but all of them are lightyears away from SP! But still, nothing is perfect and IMHO there are small details, that would make the SPWaW even better :)

First may I say I agree with all your 10 comments,  but alas we are both wishing and dreaming of better things to come. Unless they MATRIX/SSI release the necessary files we shall continue to dream. Dang it's the best wargamming game out there though, on that we also agree. Nice post colonel.

I think all of those are in WinSPWW2. At least they're in WinSPMBT. Those are earlier generation (based on SP2 while SPWAW is based on SP3), but at least they'll offer those points.

Reverse gear for vehicles is in WinSPWW2, but the targeting priority - I dunno, haven't played SPWW2 that much to know. But anyway, these might be in SPWW2, but they're missing from SPWaW

Still, for some reason the SPWW2 does not have the same kind of attraction to it, as SPWaW has, at least not for me.

Goblin, Goblin, Goblin  ......

Seriously, is a new version of SPWaW being prepared, as it seems there are some rumors flying around; especially it seems that the co-operation between Matrix Games and SPWaW depot has fired up some additional rumors. Does someone have proper knowledge, rather than guesses and speculation, if there is some sort of project going on to introduce a "new SPWaW"?

Or are we really stuck with SPWaW 8.403 (+ possible mods)?
