Back in November I took a TDY and we spent about a week on Wake Island. I didn't take this picture (the bridge from Wake to Peale was destroyed a few years ago and I didn't want to risk the tide coming back in and my camera getting ruined if I had to swim) but I did get to see that gun in person. It was quite the sight and I thought you guys might appreciate getting a look at it.

I had a great time on that trip. It was absolutely gorgeous there. I can see why people would fight over a place like that. And if anyone is interested I have some pictures of some bunkers and the POW rock that I could post here as well.

Last but not least is the POW rock. I didn't know this but some contractors helped the Marines defend when the Japanese invaded. 99 of those guys were kept on the island to work for the Japanese. In '43 the Navy came in to bomb the crap out of the place and the Japanese commander thought they were about to be invaded so he had all those guys lined up on the beach and shot. But they missed one and you can see what he carved in the rock afterwards. They went to bury the bodies and came up short one so they sent out search parties and caught the guy and the commander personally beheaded him. Not a real happy story.

The Marines should have retaken Wake just to kick the SOB CO's ass along with his cronies.

The Japanese commander got his later. He was tried for war crimes and hung in '48 maybe?

I got some bad news today. My grandpa passed away this morning. He was a Pacific war vet. He was in the 9th Special USN Construction Battalion and spent some time on Tulagi. And he was a very good guy. I'm really gonna miss him.

Sorry to hear the news, IAM.

My grandmother's husband, the only grandfather figure I've had, was a vet of Europe, in the 29th Inf Div. He has told us some of his funny stories, but never talked much about the rest of the war. He's recently agreed to let me sit down with him and record him as he tells as much of his story from WWII as he can remember. I intend to write it up to keep for the family. I'm heading up to Maryland in April to spend this time with him.

That is a great project! My gramps wrote a memior before he died a couple years ago (he is the good looking chap in my auto-sig). Alot of great stories in there, we are very glad he did that! I have posted a couple snippets in this forum before....he had some very good stories, some amazing, some funny, some kind of absurd.

I'm heading out tomorrow so I won't be around for a little while so I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your thoughts and prayers. My grandmother isn't taking it too well. No surprise since they've been married over 60 years.

Thank you again.

I was lucky and visited Wake on the way to Okinawa in 69. It was dark and landed in a DC-8 long version. They had a power plant ship anchored offshore. I swear I could see the color of the guy on deck eyes, OH yea it was 3am. Didn't see much when the let us off to strech our legs. I wish I could have seen more.
