For those of you still playing Gary Grigsby's timeless classic Carrier Strike, I took it upon myself to update the game graphics and sound effects. I have uploaded the zip file at my website: http://home.earthlink.net/~tmflood/page3.html I recommend you make a copy of your original game directory first; then unzip all the contents of the update file into your new copy of the Carrier Strike game directory. For those of you who do not yet have the game, Carrier Strike can be downloaded along with the Carrier Strike Expansion Disk at the Underdogs website: http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?id=177 Hope you enjoy the update! Regards, Rich Dionne P.S. I'm still working on my PacLink program, which you can learn more about at my website.

Bob, I am running under Windows 98 and the sound effects work fine. I just ran the sound.exe file that comes with Carrier Strike and selected the most basic Sound Blaster setting, which is quite adequate. What happens when you run sound.exe? Regards, Rich

Greetings,
I am keen to play the old classic Carrier Strike but have struck a problem with the Unzipping. I can access the site and down-load the zipped file but it stays zipped in my folder. I can see all the files in unzipped format with winzip but I cannot put the files into the folder! Thus I can see them in the Winzip but can't get them unzipped into the game folder I created. I am a Computer ludite, can any one help? tony Luke

Rich: Thanks a lot for the update! It's a great game. But I'm getting my tail whipped by the Japs. How on earth did they lose the Pacific War? Good thing I wasn't in command at the time LOL. But I'm learning. Tony: Carrier Strike won't unzip using "Winzip". Go to a website like TUCOWS or Zdnet and download a utility called "WinRAR". Or, use a search engine like http://www.google.com/ and type in "WinRAR", and you'll have a list of sites you can download it from. Then use it just like Winzip. You should have no problem with it. When you do get this utility, in preferences, make sure all files with the indicated extensions are checkmarked. That way, no matter what type of file you download, you will be able to open it with WinRAR. You will be able to unzip the game with this utility. In many ways WinRAR works better than Winzip, and I actually prefer it. Let us know how you make out [ September 01, 2001: Message edited by: Von Rom ]

If your using Winzip and your at the part that shows you all the files, then hit the "Extract" button located above, another window will open looking a little like Windows Explorer-use it to select the Directory you want to extract to.
Once you've done it a couple of times it's second nature!

Hello Rich, I had been using a MS-DOS shortcut to start CS and it ran fine in Win98. The Carrier Stike game was extracted into and runs inside a ARJ32 directory. No problem in the past. After downloading and adding your update, I did manage to run the game. BTW, the graphics look great. But tonight, when clicking on the MS-DOS shortcut on my desktop, I received the following message: "CF may not run well unless it is run in MS-DOS mode. Do you want to change..." Clicking on the CF icon in directory in Win98 also gave the same result. Usually, the monitor blanks out and CF starts up. I rebooted into MS-DOS mode and typed in "CF" and received the following message: "Mel Fatal Error #: 3" Needless to say I am concerned. I wonder if I should just back out of the update entirely and reload and extract from scratch. Any ideas?

RayM, I think the errors pop up after a change in the sound.cfg file. Why don't you try re-running the sound.exe file (either from DOS or using the cs.bat file). Try a different sound setting ( A) Soundblaster works for me, or try J) PC Speaker)to see if it is indeed the sound configuration which is messing you up. Let me know what happens. Rich, Once again, you've hit on the fix. I went back and set the sound to J) and fired up the game that had your updates. This time I got (for the first time BTW)the game cover(?)screen and then the Standard or Extended Scenarios screen. I haven't played enough yet to see what the sounds are like. I fired up a saved game and went to VIEW-TF on a Carrier TF containing about 8 ships. To my surprise, I saw only various US and IJN carrier icons! They look great but something is not right. I then checked a 5 ship replenish TF and saw a total of 5 CV icons. Any ideas? Ray

Ray, You need to copy the cf.exe file from the CSGraphics10.zip file over the existing cf.exe file that came with Carrier Strike. This should straighten out the icon allocations. I recommend that you make a copy of your Carrier Strike directory first so you don't have to reinstall the basic game. Regards, Rich
