Gordo ...
I've only taken on Russia once and it was a different mod and has ended in stalemate in that theatre. But the overall effect has been that I am losing the war on my other fronts because I don't have enough troops to cover my other excursions & was not ready for an Allied counterattack in other places.

Not sure about this mod, but it will unleash new planes, ships and troops into the mix. I certainly do not recommend a 4 sided war unless you can knock Russia out quickly.

The problem for me was once I committed my forces I did not adequately surround and destroy the Russians, instead I pushed them back and hence they are basically still at full strength. Don't allow them to get behind you and make sure you cut his forces into 2 or three - as I see you plan to do.

Good Luck.

Haven't looked at which mod you're playing yet.  While I haven't dealt with USSR in any of my games, my brother has PBEM game in 1944 now, where USSR has been active for about a year.  As Japan, you can make some inital gains, esp if you're able to punish the Soviet AF early (their planes are mediocre, and their pilots are 50ish esp, so you can shred them if you train your squadrons to 70).

But it -is- attrition for you.  It's going to absorb a lot of troops and planes.  And I don't know about your House Rules, but if USSR is in, is he able to fly in B-24s to fly from Soviet bases?  They will rock your Home Islands in a heart beat (and suddenly you need even MORE fighters over a large aread, to defend against the long-range strikes vs. strat targets).

Again, it's not my experiance dealing with USSR.  But having played both sides, it would be my recommendation to not mess with Russia unless you've got China on the ropes and Burma strongly secured (because UK can attack thru Burma, and puts strat targets in SEAsia and Malaya on the target list).

But I'll agree, there is a "wouldn't it be cool" factor to attacking Russia.

So best of luck to you in whatever you decide.

Thanks for the reply's

I am playing Stock and china is already overrun with only a surrounded pocket left in Chungking. Burma and Sri Lanka are held securely with lots of divisions and assorted other LCU's. We have a house rule that no other Allied units are allowed to be based in Russians bases.

It has just gone 1 November so the snow has started to fall. Should I will wait till the Spring to attack or attack during winter? I assume there must be penelties for attacking in Winter. I need to give a months notice and I am trying to push things along. If I can overrun Russia in say 6 months or less then I can move the units out to other defensive areas.

Napoleon, Hitler didn't have much luck ... I doubt you will too in winter. Have a read about the rules regarding winter assaults - they are highly prohibitive!

The end is nigh

I deleted the combat report for the next two days.

To summarise - Toms Death Star came in from the North East. I had 120 Betties with 80+ experience at Munda hoping to catch Tom's BB's coming in doing bombardment runs from Luganville. Good move. However, I didn't count of WiTP AI, instead of going for the nice juicey BB fleet at 8 hexes range they flew straight into Tom 300+ CAP Death star unescorted. I think 1 returned for no loss to the Allies . I guess I should have known better. I am preparing for the worst now as of course I have no naval bombers to stop his ships.

Over in India Tom caught me by surprise and invaded Colombo. This is ok by me as he will have a hard time here.

Next turn

I am really not sure what to do. It is no use using KB at this stage - I told Tom there will be no carrier battle while he keeps 300 aircraft of CAP. I may have to pull back to Rabaul out of his fighter range.

GordoNZ , do you still have most of your carriers and their respective planes ? Are they repairing, and if so how did they get damaged ?

Hi Stuman

Welcome to the thread - always good to get questions etc

I got silly and tried to invade India. The Allied airforce gave me a and I lost the Hiryu and lots of other badly damaged. A CV and CVL are still in the yards in the orange, I was lucky to save them.

Lost another two CVE's due to a good move by Tom.

Been waiting for this attack for a long time. Surprised Tom didn't get stuck in sooner. Waiting for overspeced P-38 I suppose. What fighters I do have there give a good showing against the overspeced P-38. The turn before I had quite a number of additional fighters but they went elsewhere for very good use

I am not particular worried about Port Moresby now as I have lost or will lose all of the Solomons it is no use.

Tom told me with the next turn he scuttled all 6 CV's. All I can say is totally unexpected result and this has helped me a great deal. This should slow Tom down for six months. Not sure how many CV's he should have in Nov 42 but I assume he still has a number left.

How long do they take to respwan?

A very successful day for the Empire. Even though I lost 350 aircraft it was worth it.

I must also add that Tom took it very well - He is a top man to play against.

It takes 18 months for CVs to re-spawn. The Allied "Death Star" does not achieve that status until '43 when they carry Hellcats, IMO. He took a big risk thinking that he could do the same thing with Wildcats. From the Combat Report, it looks like he put too many CVs in a single TF. In '42, a CV and CVL is all he should put in a ACTF. He had all those BBs he could have used to soak up torpedo hits. An Allied player can afford the lose of BBs, not CVs at this point in the game.

I hope you have lenty of subs in the area trying to kill off cripples.

6 CVs ! Congrats GordoNZ. Gives you some more time to decide what to do, and to use the KB differently than otherwise. I am not sure, but I think those 6 do not respawn for about a year and a half or so.

By denying them supply. I think the same holds for the 4E bombers from Lunga - intense bombing campaigns eat a lot of supplies, though I do not know the exact numbers (does anyone out there have a formula how to calculate that ?). I don't know whether you can achieve this denial, but the starting point for it may be good now that US CVs are out of play.

Your opponent has already retaken the initiative, but having lost his CVs, you get about a year during which you do not face invasions out of LBA umbrella.. But LBA is still a monstruous threat, and between the bombers and a strong P48 LRCAP from multiple covering Bases, he can still go forward in many places..

I haven't followed the game closely but you should really take a hard look a the situation and ask :
- Where does his loss of CVs affect him most, how can I exploit this weakness ?
- How does that affect his plans and therefore my preparation ?
- Do I have scope for limited offensive action or do I just have to prepare defense with more margin for manoeuvre.

For example Raiding his supply lines might become interesting since he is very short in CVs to protect them, you could considerably slow down his build up.

I really believe the Solomons are lost anyway, and difficulties in supplying or evacing this theatre means that for the next year his forces are stranded in malaria bases to rot.. you need to make sure that he can't supply them properly or at least move them.

You could form a few hunter killer sub groups with a Glen equipped and 3 to 4 fleet subs. A couple of them between Christmas Island and San Fran. Then a few more around Pago Pago area.

You may need to have a anti-PT boat SC TF of a CL and 4 DDs proceed your "nuk" bombardment missions. As an Allied player, I would but a few PT TF around the forward bases to eat up op points and hope on the follow up turn to find some ships still too close to escape LBA attacks.

looks like you're putting up a good fight, that's a lot of bombers to bring down. It's pretty normal I think to have only about 50% of your cap actually in the air to fight his bombers. Sometimes it's better not to even CAP a base as the allies get stronger. Allied sweeps seem to send almost all the planes in the group over your base, so even if you have equal numbers Allies sweep you at 2 to 1. Not pretty usually. You lose less pilots over your own airfields though.
