On a similar note anyone know how Curt Schilling's new MMO game is coming along? Supposedly the most expensive/best fantasy MMO of all time (Aren't they all that BEFORE they get released?) I saw Seth McFarlane is now involved or whatever. Website is got more content anyway.

I've always wondered, having had a celebrity in my EQ2 Guild, who it might have been. Its pretty well known EQ2 is the favorite amongst celebrities.. and he/she had said the whole point is for no one to know who you are ... and had regretted even bringing up that he/she was a celebrity on one of our long gaming sessions (Which is why im fairly certain he/she was being truthful because it wouldnt have fit the personality for him/her to have been lying about that.. but then again ya never know). All he/she would say is who they weren't if I asked (Which I didnt past 3 or 4 names). At the time I only knew of a few confirmed celebrities. Heather Graham of course. I think Stephen Colbert publicly admitted it once. Drew Berrymore.. I forget a lot of them (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel (Hardcore D&D player also like Colbert), porn star Asia Carrera (Mostly an FPS lan gaming fan but rumors abound), Robin Williams... But obviously Curt was always the most publicly famous because he just would bring it up whenever he got a chance.. Like 100 times.

Curt and Vin Diesel are the only 2 to go so far as to start game companies themself though.

Which is my point here... Why on earth, in all the dozen interviews I've seen now about his new game... Has he never once mentioned MMP.. Just a simple acknowledgement?

Wargaming needs a new celebrity. Even Avalon Hill constantly pointed out Walter Cronkite (sp?) as a avid wargamer and fan. It goes a long way.

Too bad for us.

PS. Now I'm always thinking about who IM REALLY playing with... Too bad I decided to quit EQ2 about 7 days after first finding out. I'd probably have been told. Man to think all that time I might have been gaming with Carrot Top!!!

Veldor-

It seems like there'll be about a week of Open Beta, a couple days of downtime, then a 2 or 3 day head start.  That's usually how it goes.

I'd suggest using the Open Beta time for checking out the classes and finding which you prefer.  Alt-tastic and all.

Not back in the day thats not how it went. The whole point of Open Beta was to make sure the loads could be handled on the server, the bandwidth and lag accomodated for, and overall backend and frontend stability, etc. etc.

No way that can be done in a week. No amount of Closed Beta testing will give you those type of pilot test results. Unless for some reason Closed Betas now include 100,000+ users...

Either way, heres to hoping for a smooth launch...

Eve doesn't have much of a grind now days. I can make 100mil isk just by doing 3 or 4 level 4 missions. Last time I lost my battleship, it took me no time to get setup again.

The number one thing I like about Eve is there is no skill grind, just set your skill and it trains online or offline. The number two thing is free expansions.

I think Warhammer has over 60k people in the closed beta, so I am hoping it goes smooth at launch.

Regarding Warhammer Online, I just received a "private invite" to play this weekend Friday the 22nd through Monday the 25th. It's an invite only invent and doesn't really say why I was invited (Beta Application? Pre-order? Multiple Pre-Orders? Cuz I'm that cool?)

Funny thing it ended up in my Outlook Junk Mail filter...so you might want to check yours to see if you also got one

Yeah, they're having a preview weekend during closed beta for some people who pre-ordered. I'd suggest downloading that baby ASAP because it's over 9GB and there'll likely be some patching afterwards, too.

Curt's company, 38 Studios, is developing a MMO with some big names involved such as author R. A Salvatore and Todd McFarlane. It is not yet named.

38 Studios

Curt is also a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and one of the founders of the board wargame company MMP

Had a blast in RvR on the first night of preview weekend for Warhammer.

I hadn't done a whole lot of pvp in the last week or so but grabbed an old guildmate from another game and we had a good time.  My multitasking skills drop off a bit when I approach a 12 pack but that's part of the fun.

This is a short in-character AAR of a small fleet operation in EvE Online. My character is in the Amarr capsuleer militia, the 24th Imperial Crusade. We are opposed by the Minmatar capsuleer militia, Tribal Liberation Force. These are not player created alliances, but organizations set up by the NPC states to get the capsuleers fight for them in their wars. The fighting takes place in low security space and the aim is to capture enemy military complexes, which, in the end, will lead to the capture of whole systems.

We formed up an hour or two after prayer hours in cruisers and frigates and started hunting the heathens and terrorists on their home ground in the HED constellation. We had about 15 ships.

The catch was scarce in the beginning, we only managed to crash a small gatecamp consisting of three cruisers and a battleship, and one cruiser and the battleship got away. After that we captured a republic fleet military complex to force a battle but the enemy did not react.

Two 24th Imperial Crusade Omen class cruisers after the destruction of terrorist vessels.

We then received reports of a large heathen fleet operating in deeper Metropolis and moving back into Heimatar, where we were flying around, causing havoc. We then reshipped into battlecruisers and other heavier ships, with yours truly hopping into an Armageddon class battleship, the only battleship in the fleet so I acted as a fleet flagship of sorts when we were moving around, although the true fleet commander, FoolishBob, remained in his Harbinger class battlecruiser.

24th Imperial Crusade Harbinger and Prophercy class battlecruisers and other ships undocking from a station in Dal system.

24th Imperial Crusade fleet in warp.

The enemy fleet arrived in Dal as well eventually, but evaded us for about 30-45 minutes. A few lighter vessels were encountered and destroyed. When we finally managed to engage them at a stargate it became apparent that they had reshipped into heavier ships than we had and outnumbered us. We lost two battlecruisers vs. one of theirs which is quite an acceptable outcome when you consider that we ended up in an ambush with 6 battleships and almost twice our numbers in supporting vessels on the enemy side and just one battleship on our side.

Our fleet then quickly reformed, with many pilots undocking their battleships.

24th Imperial Crusade battleships assembling at a stargate.

As we moved out it became apparent that the enemy had once again gone into hiding and dispersed, unwilling to fight on equal terms and unable to bring heavier forces than ours on the field anymore. However they were still more than happy to take advantage of lone Falcon class recon cruisers foolishly uncloaking at a station and engaging. That was how the lone loss of our battleship fleet occurred when said falcon engaged a portion of the enemy fleet at a station in Auga system...

One can only imagine the dismay of the enemy when, even before the Falcon disintegrated, a fleet of 7 battleships, 6 battlecruisers and other supporting ships landed right on top of them and unleashed their firepower.

A bad day to be a terrorist.

All in all 3 battleships, 4 cruisers, a destroyer and 2 frigates were lost for the enemy, as well as 4 of their pilots being sent back to their cloning bay. Our side suffered no further losses.

The enemy made no further attempts to engage us after that.

And here's a second short AAR. For those who do not know, CCP released a new expansion in early march, providing us 2500 new systems to explore with a lot of new content. Randomly closing and opening wormholes provide the real chance of getting "lost in space". Never mind the ancient guardian drones left behind by some long gone civilization. I hope you enjoy

Today I took part of a short expedition to wormhole space, also know as "W-Space" in the capsuleer community. This expedition consited of three PIE Inc. members, Vestha Yoshida, Laerise, Nuuskur and a 24th Imperial Crusade pilot Chase Starbright

Commander Yoshida was the leader and logistics officer in a Guardian class logistics cruiser, Commander Laerise and Lt. Nuuskur provided damage support in a Navy Issue Omen and a Zealot class cruisers respectively and pilot Starbright was engaged in salvage retrieval in a Malediction class interceptor..

The expedition started from Barira system and was already well under way when I finally arrived. But it was interesting to note that the combat conditions were significantly altered by the presence of a pulsar nearby. Shield capacities were increased as were signature sizes and targeting ranges while armor resistances and capacitor recharge were weakened.

A Guardian and a Pulsar

As the system the wormhole lead to had been more or less cleared we were happy to discover another wormhole that led deeper into unknown space. This system had no obvious differences from the space we had been accustomed to, which was good as our ships were optimized for armour and not shields.

A Zealot and a Navy Issue Omen entering an unknown system

Several sites were quickly located that contained the fabled "Sleeper Drones" that had been left behind by whatever ancient civilization once inhabited these lands. With the logistical support provided by the Guardian it was just a matter of time before those drones were defeated, although it must be said that those vessels were obviously more capable than anything the rogue drones or any pirate organization had thrown at us before.

A cruiser sized sleeper drone under fire

A sleeper drone battleship retaliating

In the end we cleared out four locations, with the third being the most interesting and also the most difficult. What at first seemed to be an abandoned and damaged stronghold turned out to be a heavily defended complex, with several battleship sized drones arriving to defend it and causing some tense moments as our logistics and armour repairing capabilities barely kept up with the enormous damage they dished out. Eventually though, they all fell to our concentrated laser fire.

The site contained numerous damage databanks and, most interestingly, an abandoned and damaged cruiser hull, totally alien in design and nature. Pilot Starbright managed to extract some very interesting bits and pieces off that hulk.

Commander Laerise and Lt. Nuuskur inspecting a drone wreck

After the battle

After that close call we inspected and cleared out another complex and then returned home, all of us richer in experience as well as various interesting and alien gadgets.

On the way home.

LotRO and WAR are WoW clones.

That is they are essentially WoW with a hint of Tolkien/Warhammer.

I believe that LotRO even uses the WoW engine.

I found LotRO to be a better game than WoW, because it has a better class of player.

WAR I played for about 3 days, and found it to be akin to having carnal knowledge of a dead sheep.

I'm holding out for Stargate or possibly Star Trek, although Star Trek sounds like a massively single player game.

I tried Eve but you need corpmates and corporations in Eve struck me as fascist organisations that wish to control every second of your online time, led by arseholes. And Eve is not supportive of soloing.

I just got no time for that sort of thing.

There are plenty of corps in eve which operate on "RL first" policy, and don't require much from you. Ofcourse said corps also don't offer much in return if you are not active..

This goes for vanilla mmos like wow too. Those who work hardest for the loot get the most, but thats a fair deal really. Eve is no different in that. You must work hard in mmo or othervice those who work harder win always.

The best strategy to win in mmo is to hire some chinese to work for you. For the prize of few beers you can become admiral overnight. Much more cost effective that ways.

Except, ofcourse, there is no winning in an mmo, especially in EvE where you only have the goals you set yourself.

I used to play EQ from 1999 till 2005 or so and never could find a successor to give me a similiar experience. So I gave up in the end and went back to wargaming and flight sims. All those new MMO's suck for hardcore gamers, as they're solely targeting the casual market anymore.

EvE I played for some months as well, but mission grinding while waiting for your skills to get finished became dull after a while.

Surely there is. In wow it could be a equipment that you win in a raid dice throw or battle you win in a eve.

Whatever goal it is that you want to achieve its most effectively done by hiring somone to do it for you. Thats why I drop out of grind in any mmo - I just dont see the point for all that work. Just consider what the hourly wage is if you convert your ingame acheived "wealth" into realworld credits. Its less than what 3rd world people make.

Viewpoints vary of course - what one sees as work might be fun for other.

Id like a real spacesim that was more like ww2ol. In ww2ol you dont have to work for the equipment. All you have to do is fight with it. The equipment itself is built in national factories. Players are not required to work in those factories.

Maybe you guys should try Second Life.

I've never played, but am thinkig on it. My understanding is that you can create games inside the game - Or just play the game. It sounds odd, I know. A friend was telling me about a paintball war sim that is inside Second Life that was created by a subscriber AND a Battle Star Galactica game, also inside the game. I'm ****ig clueless on what it's really like in there, but maybe we could open a gambling den inside the game, or a whorehouse.

At the very least we could maybe open a purse shop and then try and grab the female avatar's asses or best case, recruit them into our flesh trade.

Just a very old guys opinion but it strikes me that these groups are a 21 century version of the cocktail party computer style. i tried a few on line games but there were always a lot of them types that ruin any party.
It looks to me that they are a natural out growth of the wired younger generation's version of a social game gathering using the computer, but then I am just an old fart from the 40's-50's or so.
if you like them do it if not don't but your wasting your time trying to figure it out.

I'm not interested in "winning" (I thought you couldn't win RPGs anyway?), I'm interested in /playing/, preferably my own way. If you solo you don't even notice if you're winning or not anyway, because solo implies not in competition with others.

At least in LOTRO and WoW you can solo if you want, and when bored of that its pretty trivial to find a group if you want something else. In Eve you really can't do either, theres no such concept as a pickup group in Eve, and theres no such concept as doing anything but the most mundane things in anything other than a group - bad combination.

Eve draws its tradition from ye olde space game, Elite, and Elite was a game all about freedom, which is why it was fun. Eve is decidedly not about freedom, so it isn't for me.

Naaa, Lotro uses the same engine as DDO, though it's much more tweaked and polished. I'd say it's probably the best for all-round content quality right now. Though the pvp isn't anything special, I've been back at it for the always enjoyable pve.

I have to disagree here, EvE IS all about freedom. You CAN solo a lot of the content, it's just harder than in a group sometimes. I know plenty of people in game (granted most of them are ocd) that handle multiple accounts and run their own little minicorps.

I have also been in two great corporations which are nothing like you described them (fascist and immature). Instead they are quite the opposite, lots of freedom to do whatever you want, players helping eachother, having fun, lots of little nice initiatives etc.

If you try really really hard you can even pretty much solo-build and get a titan, although that would require quite a bit of diplomacy and skill.

You even have they entry-level group, run by players for the players, that you so desire, called EvE university. Yeah EvE has a harsh learning cliff, but that's part of the allure it has, when you achieve something it really feels like you've achieved.

Why would anyone want to play a multiplayer game solo is something i don't completely understand though..

i played WOW but stopped right after the first expansion. why?

because i was a PVP intrested player and loved the good old PVP system:

-battlegrounds only against the opponents from the own server.
-open PVP in different stylish places (tyres hand, blackrock, southshore...)
-a epic was something hard to earn.

with the new system, all the fun is gone at least for me and my former PVP guild. its all about arena, arena and arena while open PVP and battlegrounds are dead.

warhammer was fun for a while, but its "too zergish" for me. and if you play order, you are without a chance on most of the european servers...you come with 3 warbands...the destros come with 5. also, the world is not well designed in WAR. its like a scripted singleplayer MMO. you can not walk away from the main nstreet because your movement is limitated by obstacles.

i realy hope to restart playing or at least testing MMOs when guild wars 2 is out.

I believe that LotRO even uses the WoW engine.

I found LotRO to be a better game than WoW, because it has a better class of player.

Naaa, Lotro uses the same engine as DDO, though it's much more tweaked and polished. I'd say it's probably the best for all-round content quality right now. Though the pvp isn't anything special, I've been back at it for the always enjoyable pve.

Really?

LotRO has such a similar UI and gameplay to WoW I naturally assumed Turbine used the WoW engine.

DDO's engine must truly be a diamond in the rough then.

Could you post a link that says LotRO is based on the DDO engine? It's not that I doubt you, it's just that I doubt everything.

You even have they entry-level group, run by players for the players, that you so desire, called EvE university. Yeah EvE has a harsh learning cliff, but that's part of the allure it has, when you achieve something it really feels like you've achieved.

I was /in/ Eve University, and it was the most fascist corporation I was in in my whole experience there! When there is a war the directors pod people personally who don't follow orders. Orders like "Stay docked in this station for 7 days and do not undock under any circumstances". And when people complain (and they do complain) they get told, "Play an alt", which is utterly unappealing as it means splitting your skill points up.

How fun that is, anyway. Thats why in Eve there are jokes about learning advanced station piloting 5. Riveting stuff.

Why would anyone want to play a multiplayer game solo is something i don't completely understand though..

That there are other players there is almost incidental, really. They are also based on MUDs (Eve combat is practically identical to a MUD, even the messages, X wrecks Y with his Z, are boilerplate MUD combat) and MUDding, while there are other players with you, is often (depends on the game) generally a solo experience, with the odd bit of PvP.

The most solo-friendly and casual play-friendly MMO I've found is City of Heroes. I rarely have time to play, but whenever I do even if it's just for 15-30 minutes, I can get something done and be entertained instead of spending the time looking for a group or traveling to a mission destination.

I've tried and enjoyed many MMOs for 1-2 weeks, but most would only work for me if I actually made them my hobby (which is never going to happen) and invested significant time. COH works even with minimal time investment, so I keep a subscription to that active and have it on my laptop for when I need to unwind a bit without much thought.

Regards,

- Erik
