Hi folks, back from my 3 day Britain trip, ready to do some turns...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/24/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 89 encounters mine field at Derby (24,85)

Japanese Ships
DD Usugumo, Mine hits 1, on fire

we´ve spotted at least half a dozen small TFs at Derby so we sent in a CL and some destroyers. And for what reason ever, in this campaign my ships 90% of the time hit mines as soon as they enter an enemy hex with mines... never seen that ridicoulos high hit rate. Mk16, the DD has a 30% chance to make it...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Derby at 24,85

Japanese Ships
CL Natori
DD Ariake
DD Akatsuki
DD Fubuki
DD Usugumo, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SC SC-519, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
SC SC-637, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
SC SC-640, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
SC SC-641
SC SC-648, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
SC SC-742, Shell hits 3, and is sunk

sub chasers are even more vunlerable than PTs when it comes down to absorbing gunfire... but god damn, we didn´t attack another TF in the hex... we spotted DDs, MLs...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Kwajalein at 79,79

Allied Ships
SS Plunger

Plunger´s torps failed to detonate... old story, sub in port... why not hitting one of my 10.000 mines at Kwajalein?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4Es on nav attack out of Derby... probably set to only 6 or 7 hexes range as they never attack my shipping at Koepang (8 hexes away)... one 500lb bomb hit and the destroyer would be lost...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 27,79

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 11

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 19
B-24D Liberator x 28

DD Akatsuki
DD Fubuki

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet
3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

6 hexes from Derby, afternoon strike. The CL take two penetrating 500lb bomb hits, showing me that it´s not that a good idea to use a light cruiser in this area. Amazingly, the CL will live on with only something like 35 sys damage... The 11 Tojos were pretty useless, the number of B-17 lost to ops was totally surprisng today though: 5 of the bombers crashed - reason unknown... when we damage 70+, usually only 1 is lost to ops...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, that's a lot of people up there.  Six divs at Wyndham, six more at Lautern.  How many at Alice Springs, Derby, Broome ?  How many are kept at Perth, at Brisbane, at Sydney ?  What do you think he would do if you sent your tanks down the road towards Southern Australia, would it not panick him ?

No idea how many are at Alice Springs, at Derby and Broome I´m sure there are none. If I could take Wyndham, Broome and Derby wouldn´t be a problem at all. 10-12 units there but surely just baseforces or small inf units...

Won´t send my tanks South, as soon as you get 12 hexes away from your supply bases it will get difficult to supply your units...

I've been reading this without comment, but good AAR. I like the late move to Australia, pretty ballsy.

I can't recall, did you get Auto Victory in this one? If so, obviously you are playing through that.

hi! thanks for reading

I did get the autovictory, but we weren´t that much interested in it. IIRC the victory ratio was something like 4.3:1 as Miller reclaimed New Caledonia just before entering 43. I didn´t take Manila though (worth as much as Noumea), so if I had, we would have achieved a ratio of something like 6:1!

We´re now at 4.4:1.

Hey, I don't suggest to fight or actually invade, just drive down as far as you're confident, send a healthy dose of fear in the hearts of the Australians. If you seem ready to strike southern Australia through the desert, he should (hopefully) postpose any invasion he might be planning in the Pacific to hastily send reinforcements there (and divert any troops he might send further north from Perth). Aka the great fear Rommel instilled in his first drive towards the Nile, when his actual assets were ... skeletal at best.

Or it could not work at all, and just be a waste of time for your armored fist.

At the moment I can´t afford to send a single unit anywhere else than into the fights for Northern Australia. With the enemy having nearly 3000 av at Wyndham there is just no way to do anything else than to fight in the North.

basically you are now trying to starve 2 bases fully loaded with 5-6 divs + lots of extras between Lautern and Wyndham ?

What is your situation in China ? do you have extra PPs you could spare to buy out further troops ? Have you weakened India as much as possible ? I mean India is nice but if you can win in Northern Aus, it is worth losing India a year early because India is of no use if the allies are already creeping inside the SRA...

How do you fancy your chances ?

yup, that´s basically what I´m doing at the moment... the ones at Lautern will be starved but the 170.000 troops at Wyndham will be assaulted. But I´m pretty sure I will only be able to take Wyndham if they run out of supply after the first two or three attacks. Otherwise my troops would be totally shredded, no chance to take the base against 3.000 av, level 9 forts (and the firepower of Western Allied divs) and lots of supply. But as Miller was so kind to tell me (before my invasion ) that he doesn´t get any or only very few supplies to Northern Australia and that he´s running low on supplies I´m confident that Wyndhamn has only something around or below 20.000. When I think about the fact that the invasion so far cost me over 50.000 supplies (Darwin is now at 123.000 supplies) then I guess the supply for the 170.000 cut off troops at Wyndham won´t last long, especially not when we do heavy fighting. But the first attacks will surely wreck my troops.

The situation in China is simple: I won the war there. The front is at Kweiyang and Chungking with my troops holding position there and the Chinese can´t do anything, in fact they are losing their troops to starvation. I also took Chengtu in the North, so the Chinese get perhaps 1000 supplies max per day, which is of course far too few for 700.000 troops.

Due to the fact that Miller earlier moved a dozen Chinese corps into Burma I countered that with China command divisions in Burma also. After the surrender of Myitkina, those China command divs then marched towards India and are now holding position there. As you can see in previous screenshots, I have now 15.000 av in Manchuria, a good number of China command divs moved there and is preparing for the assault (not sure yet) on Russia. I get a couple of divs as reinforcements in China the next months, they will then take position at Chungking and Kweiyang and high experienced divs from there will move to India.

If (big if) I will be able to knock out the Russian also, then the continent will be save as I could then move more than a dozen additional divs to India. Burma and Malaya will be of course be save also but I doubt I have to heavily garisson those places anyway.

At the moment I have nearly all my major combat units under Southern area and Burma command fighting in Northern Australia, another fresh div (100/100) and two more understrenght (90/90 and 80/80) divs that came as reinforcements are on the way to Australia also. Our assault value there will then peak at something like 8.000 av!

If Northern Australia will fall then Lautern has no chance to hold and we will have destroyed over 300.000 Allied first line troops. This would hurt. To hold Northern Australia I guess we will need over 3000 av, dispersed between the four bases behind level 9 forts. If the Allied drive North again then I could move the divs between the bases by ship in no time and then the base that will be attacked will have 2000 av behind level 9 forts and ample supplies. This should make it hard for the Allied. But that is all a big if and we´re far from there. At the moment I would guess my chances are still below 50% to conquer Northern Australia.

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Beaufort I launching torpedoes at 200 feet

the DD that had to of course hit a mine was finished by Beauforts. Miller finally realized that he has to use torp bombers it seems. And being afraid of this threat all the time already, I never used a bombardment TF that can´t move at least 5 hexes and therefore staying out of torp range. But this only works if the ships stay undamaged and a torp or mine hit could ruin my day, resulting in a BB or CA sunk... we just have to do more bombardments and knock out the airfield but as it stands now, Miller is just too lucky...

the dozen art units I brought in are now ordered to move from Darwin to Wyndham...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15505 troops, 173 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1860

Defending force 274759 troops, 1486 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6495

Attacking force 22649 troops, 268 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 3151

Defending force 187034 troops, 68 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5281

Just look at my op losses, they happen from flying Cap and transfers... it´s insane and total BS IMO...

Another DD lost.  Aren't you starting to be running low on escorts ?  I don't remember any big unit lost previously, but many destroyers have been sunk it seems.

damn it! Now that I´m doing the AAR update I realize that the spotted TF South of Wallis island is a carrier TF! While giving the orders I thought this would be a bombardment TF and so I moved in bombers set to attack tomorrow. Damn, please let me be lucky and make my bombers stay home...

Miller of course also used a dozen Kingfishers again to do his "float plane nuclear bombardment trick"... I don´t like that, nevertheless as he´s doing it all the time, I also have ordered my float planes near Wyndham to do the same. If he thinks he wants to do that, I will do it also...

Japanese forces CAPTURE Woodlark Island base !!!

See below the situation around Pago Pago. We spotted half a dozen TFs but it doesn´t look like a mega invasion as the TFs look rather small. I already regret having flown my bombers to Wallis Island they will probably all die tomorrow. Watching the replay isn´t enough, in such important turns you should also look at the combat report afterwards again to make sure you don´t do something stupid like that.

Pago Pago has 380 av at the moment, level 9 forts and 15.000 supplies. I expect to see bombardments on Wallis island and Pago Pago and more airattacks. There are two IJN base forces with CD guns at Pago Pago but none of the dedicated CD gun units or big base forces as I don´t consider Pago Pago as important enough. To describe the situation at the moment, all I can say is that Miller is exactly doing what I´m dreaming about. He´s attacking one of the areas I care the least!

I guess the carrier raid a couple of months ago out of this area made him think that he has to take Pago Pago back and that´s fine with me. As soon as he isn´t attacking into the Marshalls or Solomons, there´s nothing to fear about.

Another DD lost.  Aren't you starting to be running low on escorts ?  I don't remember any big unit lost previously, but many destroyers have been sunk it seems.

to be honest, I was thinking about the same thing last turn and I have to admit that I´m bitching around too much when it comes down to DDs S U N K it seems. I have a hell a lot of them being hit and heavily damaged but I also always try to save as many ships as possible, sending them to the nearest port, send an AR there and most times a nav HQ also. Seems like the chances I give my DDs to survive are most times too low as we´re fighting not far away from ports where we can disband them two or three turns later.

And the result of that made me more than amazed last turn when I checked my DD losses last turn. We lost 9 DDs so far! ONLY 9! The majority of them to PT boat torps though. I guess with the reinforcements I received during the 15 months of war I now have more DDs than at the beginning.

There are around a dozen DDs damaged sitting somewhere in Japan (or are on their way to Japan) though. And the only reason for this are either mines or PTs...

Only 9 ?  This is really fine and affordable.  Off course, with the dozen DDs undergoing repairs, that's 21 DDs unavailable, but this leaves plenty of other ships.  I really thought the situation was most dire...

Could you put a recap of the lost ships & boats from both sides, including the merchies, auxiliaries and subs (at least the number in each category), in a future update ?  Many thanks if you could do this.

Re: Pago Pago, I suppose you plan to evac cadres out of there, to rebuild the units ?  Do you have enough production of armament & vehicle points ?  In my tests of the Japanese side, I never manage to get enough of both to simply fill out starting & arriving LCUs, let alone rebuilding whole units after an evacuation...

unfortunetly I don´t use tracker or one of the other utilities so it´s already quite hard to do an exact list of ships sunk as we´ve been in the hundreds for quite some time already, counting them by hand will be quite time consuming.

I will evac cadres from Pago, as I´ve done from all the other bases I´ve lost so far. The only problem with this is that due to bad data base programming, at least 20% of the units turn into ghosts and can never be rebuilt. Another 15% or so just vanish so in fact even though I´m usually able to evac cadres of all units (and not just one or two support squads), not all can be rebuild due to programme errors.

Armament and eng points are no problem, have plenty of them in the pools. Arm is somewhere above 125.000 IIRC and vehicles well above 25.000. Means I´ve got more than I will need for reinforcments and rebuilds. Pools are growing daily.

Try putting some lo-fi Admiral in charge of ASW tf. I read somewhere on the forum that putting admiral can slightly increase the performance of ASW.

Allied ground losses:
13796 casualties reported
Guns lost 196
Vehicles lost 48

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 1

now I would consider this being a nuke. Well, using the float plane trick obviously helps, even though we didn´t completely knock out the airfield... only one supply hit doesn´t make me cheer either... but I shouldn´t complain when getting such an excellent result...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Wallis Island, at 93,107

Japanese aircraft

as you can see, the Allied float plane trick works 100% also. While I refused to do it in the past (except one time), Miller keeps using his float planes en masse for recon before going in with his bombardment TFs and it seems to be working 90% of the time...

now isn´t that a nice way to wreck your troops? Miller landed one division, a RCT and support troops, including CD units. I still don´t get it why he lands at the end of the day phase instead of the start of the night phase tomorrow. Pretty sure the Allied div will be wrecked tomorrow. I don´t know if there are more TFs that are scheduled to unload tomorrow, but if not, then he should now evacuate his troops again. With my nuclear bombardment of Wyndham and the Allied losses on Pago Pago, the Allied suffered 166 points for ground losses today, now at 18.490...

our aircraft losses were severe though and we now have several daitais trapped on Wallis Island and I can´t fly them out again...

I will take a screenshot of the DD losses next turn, but yes, I shouldn´t have ranted about the losses, but about the hits on my DDs. Wouldn´t I have been able to disband them after two or three turns at the latest all the time and wouldn´t I have tried everything to save them then the losses would be somewhere in the 40-50 though.

Like I´ve said, disbanding and sending a nav HQ and AR saved many of them that were already at 80 floatation and otherwise lost.

Wow, nice nuke by only two BBs.

MLEs don't have any depth charges or any big AA guns, and don't have any cargo capacity.  Really weird.  I hope it only is a mistake on his part, those ships are too important.

By the way, your AAR really taught me a lot.  And now, I'll pay much more attention on ARs, naval HQs and close forward base : I usually tend to lose a ton of DDs, which is not too serious as the Allied, but better save them than losing them.  Especially as I'm starting my first PBEM.

You are thinking of AE ships. MLE's are very useful; only way to load mines from a size-8 or lower port.

They are useless in invasion TF's though; no reason for her to be there.

As Q-Ball already correctly posted, MLEs are very useFUL. AEs are nearly useless, I only use them in forward bases for the feeling of doing something right, when replenishing my BB main ammo in a level 5 port somewhere in the jungle.

as you can see, the enemy invasion has no chance at all to be succesful... I thought after the bloody landings on Midway early in the war Miller must have figuered out that the way he assaults atolls isn´t the way to go, but unfortunetely for him he hasn´t figured out how to do it correctly. The enemy has no chance and this will again buy us time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Avenger I spotted one of our subs 7 hexes North of Perth and that must mean that there is an Allied (British) carrier. This could mean that the Allied CVs are going around Australia, perhaps with a reinforcement convoy for the North coast? This could be seriously bad news...

Here´s what Miller landed on Pago Pago. Absolutely wrong way to do an atoll landing and absolutely not enough troops at all. What did he think he would encounter there? 3 construction btn? And I can´t say that this island is super duper heavily defended. Why he includes MLE and CVE in his invasion TF and why he lands sea bee units with his combat troops isn´t understandable anyway...

oh chris...this nukes at Wyndham are classics 8espacialy the one with 13.000 allied casualties) and there is nothing wrong to do some recon before unleashing your big guns...just like miller did and still do.

the invasion of pago pago seems to run absolutly in your direction and maybe its time to let the KB pilots get some training there?

Oh yes, 12 DDs, that's a disaster.  You're doomed, you'd better surrender at once !

Why didn't Miller simply go for Upolu alone, with enough escorts and CAP, neutralizing Pago Pago & Wallis Island, and bomb the hell out of the former before invading ?  Upolu was empty, right ?  With only one division and a few construction battalions, there was nothing more to do, especially as a good Intel and some recon flights should have given him a clear idea of what was the garrison of those bases.

The paras were a bold move, but risky.  And the timing is plain wrong for his various actions, this turn : a supposed big resupply convoy around Australia escorted by the CVs (a long way, so they're out of the picture for one or two weeks), a drop on Thursday Island, a 4E sneak attack, and an understrength amphibious assault.  Why not regroup all this in the same area ?

Your invasion of North Australia must really have made him dizzy, to show such a lack of coordination.  I hope for him he gets his mind before it's too late...

No, Upolu wasn´t empty, I never took it and Miller airlifted troops in long ago and built it further up. I´m not interested in this area so I just let him do whatever he wanted. Fine with me when he attacks Pago Pago, a totally unimportant base for me at this date!

My TF managed to go out again without being attacked by enemy LBA and my recon tells me that there are only some 4 or 5 dozen bombers left at Derby and Broome together. lol Paul, what are you doing? He stated in his last email that no matter if he uses 5x20 or 1x100 ship TFs, it takes forever to unload... well, the way he´s doing it it surely takes forever...

what would I give to achieve such results... so far, the enemy bombardments work 10 times better than mine as we have to be lucky to get a single hit on the airfield every now and then... but... we also achieved half a dozen nukes during the game already... a dozen nukes out one and a half dozen bombardments for the Allied, half a dozen nukes out of 10 dozen bombardments for us...

and I´m waiting for the next thread to be posted that says that the IJN is hardcoded to do nukes every time in the game while the Allied can´t ever do that... lol

my tank units are one hex East of Derby now... I have ordered them to move into the town and attack. 12 units, some 31.000 troops spotted there. Smells like a big stack of base forces. If it is what I expect it to be then we will have a chance to achieve something with the tanks here, worth 1400 assault points. Supply is an issue for me and we will have to bring something in by ship, will try to do that with fast transport TFs made up by cruisers and destroyers. Couple of high speed runs should bring in enough supplies from Koepang to see my tanks being double supplied...

As you can see, Miller has torp bombers in the area (those are coming from Broome). This means every ship that is slower than 5 hexes is not allowed to enter this area as it would then be in torp range.

ouch! I have to start my attacks as we don´t have months of time. The losses we suffered aren´t surprising, in fact they are in the lower range of what we expected. Our adjusted av looks horrible though, the enemy´s adjusted av isn´t as high as expected, I guess supply could be an issue already? Thank god we knocked a fort down at least, hopefully the enemy will run out of supply after the third attack. I thought my leading divisions would be totally shredded, but to my surprise the losses are nicely divided between a lot of troops and that´s good as this way my divs stay combat ready and recover disabled squads faster. One bgd was ordered to move out though, it will be replaced by a div coming from Darwin.

Miller has decided to now move his divs North of Alice Springs North again, they are spotted moving North on the road and are now 1 hex South of the railline connection. Wonder what he wants to do... make me nervous? March on Darwin? Try to march on Wyndham? Well, he surely won´t make me nervous as he would need something like 6-10 divs to achieve that. If he marches on Darwin, I can easily cut him off as I can move out 3000 assault points from Wyndham and still keep the Allied in place there. Then his divs at Darwin would be lost (another four! ). Marching on Wyndham would have the same result, I can move out 7 divs from Wyndham and cut him off with another three coming from Darwin.

sub is sunk... another one... how long ago was it when Miller said that due to the changes in Nikmod (that I haven´t noticed and still don´t notice) my subs are impossible to be hit and hurt? Well, in the last couple of days I´ve lost more subs than in the first year of the war and I can´t say that my subs are victims of half a dozen dedicated ASW TFs... this sub was killed by MSWs, that dropped one depth charge at a time but still achieved three hits... I-30 immediately sunk... the fourth sub that is sunk in this area? And three or four more limping back heavily damaged... another two or three with moderate damaged... so nearly a dozen subs knocked out in a weeks time by the oh so weak Allied ASW (quote Miller ).

Glad that I kill Allied subs in the dozen when they sit spotted in my bases for weeks below a dozen ASW ships...

this land combat routine really sucks hard... the enemy is now doing bombardments with two USMC def btn and two more CD gun units... we now have two nav guard units in the lead that are shredded due to the last three Allied 0 adjusted av shock attacks and this nuclear bombardment... very well done Mr. Grigsby, bombardments on heavily entrenched and fortified troops... stupid... but I shouldn´t complain, stupid enough that I can build level 9 forts on this atoll...
