Russian Steel 1.2 is now available on Fabio Prado's excellent Armor Site!

See all of the details in the SPWAW campaign/scenario subforum.

Hi Dan,
A few days ago a friend of mine sent me a part of the Soviet Union national hymn in mp3 format. If you like to include it as a opening sound file for Russian Steel Campaign I can e-mail it to you.
Kind regards,
Gallo

I have a question re: force selection. The way I read the intro I am a tank Battalion CO. Not looking for spoiler info...but.....Should I be and complete tank force or a combined arms team (the usual and customary in campaigns)

Mark Ezra:

We suggest combined arms with a strong tank core.

On paper, in June 1941, the Soviets were actually heading away from pure armored units....the Mech Corps had two tank and one Motorized Rifle Divisions...there just wasn't enough time to complete the transition...

I rationalize my selection of a core force as the sort of thing that would be detached from a 1941 Mechanized Corps for special assignment. A company or two of tanks and attached infantry.

Admittedly, this kind of command flexibility would have been very rare in Stalinist Russia but it maximizes the armored action

The 1942-5 USSR Tank Battalion was a fairly well-rounded combined arms unit (on paper) - 3 companies of Tanks, 1 company SMG inf, platoons of recce, ATG, AAMG, and Field Guns.

The SP ARty Regt had 12-16 SP Guns and much the same kind of auxiliary troops (SMGs, ATGs, Mortars, Recce)...

Either of these units are targets to evolve towards as you progress through the battles..

The key to most battles is mobility and maneuver - a motorized Rifle Company could pull off many of the missions - especially if a couple of infantry support tanks were allowed...

Foot infantry just will not be able to carry out most of the missions because they never reach the battlefield.

But the playtesting generally used: 15-20 AFVs, 15-20 Inf Squads, 12-16 various guns (AA, ATG, Mortar)....

Good Luck!

Brad

One thing I found myself doing is double-clicking the "campaign" folder so it opened and then sliding the files into it...then I couldn't find it from the SPWAW menu...I finally figured out that I was one directory level too deep so I tried again at the next higher directory level and it worked fine...

It's a WINDOWS thing...

Try this:

Double click the SPWAW folder so you see the folder icons for CAMPAIGNS, SCEN, SAVE, etc...

Don't click "campaign" open. You are at the right level.

Unzip the files to this icon (select all files in WINZIP, drag all to the "campaign" folder icon so it grays out then release - they will load into it and should be accessible from SPWAW menus...if you had any earlier campaign 22 files or RS 1.1 then you'll be prompted about whether you want to overwrite them or not..

You can also unzip to your desktop and then slide them into "campaign" much the same way...

If you are at the correct level, your window title should read across the top: Steel Panthers: World at War...

If this doesn't help then please let me know and I'll try and think of something else...

After unzipping and everything, you can then double click the "campaign" folder and you should see a whole rank of files that begin with "c022xxxx.xxx"

Hope this works.

Brad

18 KV1m40 (1a)
12 platoons scouts (18 points each - very cheap ;) -- will be 6 platoons marines and 6 120mm mortars)
5 BA-20 (will be 5 KV :)))

I strongly recommended KVs, if you try this compain, you will understand me :))

Thanks guys for the clarification. I had already set up my core units as combined arms. The wording of the battle notes could lead to an all tank force. Perhaps this is just the picky "tester" in me...LOL....I've got to say I'm loving the Campaign as I'm reading a good deal on the East front in preperation for CL and CMBB. I give this very high marks.

When planning a core force I usually go to my reference books and use a scaled down version of divisional formations. I find this gives me a balanced force with a little bit of everything and is capable of taking on any kind of mission.

I Like Yurka's force:D

perhaps not quite enough KV2s in my humble opinion...

;)

Something about a 200 kg shell going down range at the bad guys is very comforting..

But then I'm a KV kinda guy...

One can rationalize this type of core as a detachment from one of the heavy regiments that were scattered about attached to Army and Front....so it's not really fictional - just very rare.

One consideration:

I love KVs but they are slow and sometimes these battles require fast T34 speeds...either because there is much ground to cover quickly or some Panzers show up on a flank and you have to rescue somebody..

...and I've seen T34imp take considerable punishment from Mk3js...sometimes seems like they survive better than the KVs...

My current core has 8 KV types and 10 T34s...

Good Luck!

Reminder: buy only up to 59 units even if some are for later upgrade. 60 units or over and you may find that you do not get crews when your tanks are damaged - this is due to too many units in the battle.

Hello guys!
Yes, i lost some speed without T-34, specially in snow. :(
But you will have much more "bonuses" with KVs like:
- better rate of fire
- better overall armor
- can carry 12-men squad (i like marines - good fire power in close range and not bad at all in long)

P.S. I mean in my core forse 12-scout squads.. not platoons, sorry, my fault.. only 36 units overall (+1 FO)
P.P.S. As I know, in june 1941 RKKA had ~600 KVs..

sorry for my ugly english :(

Please let us know how things go for your nicely balanced KV force...and 36 units will give you extra challenge - my compliments!

Your English is 1000 times better than my Russian!

I like the Marines too although I like the new engineers with PpSH41s even better!:)

Good Luck. I think you will find your KVs become elite by game 5!!

Thanks for the input, Yurka!

Welcome to the board! It's really nice to se a Russian (?), there's not too many of you posting here :)

As for the English, don't let it intimidate you - it's good! And I don't think anyone of us here uses correct English anyway :D ;)

I'm in the middle of the RS campaign. My force is made of KVs, engineers and smg infantry. I think it is the best combination for both attack/advance and defence scenarios. For support, I buy trucks to carry the infantry for advances and more infantry for defence. KVs provide great armor coverage (most of the time :D ) and powerful gun and as noted before they can carry troops.

Once I finish my first run at RS, I will probably go back and create a more realistic force for the time, but that will be a pain to fight through as it was.

BTW, anybody who wants to PBEM, can email me at email me izhidov@tampabay.rr.com

I love to talk about OOBs :D

Here is mine:

ARMOR:

1 x Med Tank Co:
1xT-34m41 Leader
2xT-34m41 Plt
1xT-28 Plt (I love their 3 7.62mm MG)

1x BA-20 Armored Car Section
1x BT-7 Section
1x KV-1 m.40 (1A)Plt (2 tanks)

INFANTRY:

3xScout Patrol sqd
3xScout team (to improve to sniper)
1xSO Conscripts Plt (to improve to Tankriders)

1 x SO Rifle Co:

1xSO Rifle Co Leader Sqd
3x SO Rifle Plt
1x7.62 Maxim HMG Sectin
2x 50mm Mort

I have re asigned une HMG and one mort to the Inf Plt in order to not have troubles with the formation's limit. I plan to improve one of my Rifle Plt to engineers and change on Sqd of the other two plts to SMG Sqd.

1x 12.7mm DShK HMG Section (I love, love, love 12.7mm DShK HMG)

1 x Fwd Observer

1x GAZ-4M-AA Section (those are to kill infantry ... forget about the planes!)

1x 45mm ATG m.32 section
1x 45mm ATG m.38 section
2x SO Mule Pack section (to improve to komosolets or GAZ-10)

1 x 82mm Mort Section (3 tubes)

This makes a total of 59 Units

Regarding to KV ... I like better T-34s than KV.

Cheers! See you in Berlin, Tovarishs! :D

PS: I have re started the campaing ... (I was playing with a larger OOB) ... I get a minor victory in the first battle and a mayor in the second one :D
