I'm currently playing a 44-campaign as axis with the old version. I've reached mid August 44, the Allies have just invaded southern France.

I've encountered one big problem, that I've not seen in the 43-campaign (because you always win before summer 44):

Axis planes near allied territory are not able to intercept as they should.

I try to defend northern Italy (with Gruppen on Genua, Sarzana, Caselle, Aviano, Udine etc. airfields). Whenever I order units to intercept allied planes, they switch to patrol mode as soon as the allied planes are somewhere "near" the frontline. "Near" means everywhere south of the Po. Similar effect over the Adria: If I intercept bombers returning from Vienna or so, the interceptors switch to patrol as soon as the bombers have passed Triest.

You can compensate by redirecting the patrols somewhat, but this is also limited, because you can't patrol "near enemy base". So, effectively, you can only intercept north of the Po and north of Triest.
That's simply frustrating, and not realistic. It's absolutely clear that the game engine can not allow axis planes to engage over allied territory, but they should be able to fly over axis territory right up to the frontline, respectively at least over the "axis half" of the adria.
I did not try to fight over Normandy, but probably there it's the same. And near all allied occupied territory.

Harley, please have a look on how this "stay off range" is calculated. Maybe you just have to reset one variable . Players should be able to decide if they want to fight and give cover for the frontline troops and the installations behind the front.

Thank you,
Brutus

PS: Maybe same problem with the Allies: Allied planes stationed in Normandy can't fly right into axis territory, but have always to fly over the channel to England before they can turn south/east. It seems the first waypoint has also something like a "stay off range" built in, that's not always calculated correctly? Not sure because I never played Overlord as Allied, I only see the strange ways allied planes take.

As my troups are now defending the Westwall, I have to say that I don't encounter the problems there. It's even possible for axis fighters to fly a bit into allied territory.

So it seems to be an italian problem only. But it still annoys me, because it's nearly impossible to intercept the usual raids on Turin, Milan etc.

Brutus;

Your statements intrigued me, so I really started to pay attention to Axis flight operations in Italy. I play as Allies.

I've have beaten up on the Axis AI in Italy pretty badly, so I figured that was why they pulled away early.

I've gotten in about two weeks, GT, since then. The weather has not been cooperating, and the Axis have had a chance to recover.

I just ran the May 25, 1944 turn and an Axis ME109-6 unit engaged an escorted B-25 bomb group "south" of the frontlines in Italy. When the bomb group reached it return base, the Axis turn green, moved back north, and patrolled for about another thirty minutes GT.

In two weeks GT, I'll let you know about France.

Brutus,

I have looked at this before, and was satisfied it was WAD...

I won't say how it is calculated, but I will say this: After the USAAF operational tempo picked up in the latter half of 1943, which alliance was better able to project air power? Consider it in those terms, and you'll see that the ground war front lines are less relevant than other factors...

In the old BTR, Axis planes would no longer operate outside of the area covered by Axis radar.  The problem described by Brutus arises most prominently as the Axis frontline collapses and Axis industry/airbases/radar sites progressively disappear (to be replaced ultimately by Allied airbases) as the Allied ground units "advance".

Thanks for the reply harley. If it is ok how it is, I can live with it. Just thought it would be some kind of unwanted effect.

Alfred, I don't think it's about radar. I have static frontlines (gothic line, westwall), with radar reaching well into allied occupied territory most of the time.
