I should really take the time to search back through the Google Earth forums but life is short and you guys are knowledgeable. I've just reinstalled Google Earth after a PC rebuild and the image of my house is now from 4 or 5 years back - before the crash the image was from the last 2 years or so. I can tell because we chopped our hedge down about 5 years ago and set up a large trampoline 2 years ago.

Any idea why they would put older imagery up to replace newer stuff?

Maybe there are some "very_secret_military_or_other_strategic_facilities" in neighbourhood build last years, and they are keeping them in secret.

The trampoline looked like a UFO and you know how "they" like to keep this kind of stuff under wraps

Sorry....but in light of a recent thread hijacked for personal propaganda reasons by certain individuals...what does this have to do with wargaming?

This isn't actually aimed at you specifically MikeBrough

Judge, it is connected to wargaming.
You can wage wars with unproper maps. If google will put old ones then what about our wargames?

I'd pay good money for a Google Earth Map of the Ardennes sometime around December 16th, 1944

Yes - they are flatly wrong, probably date from around 1990

I've seen this map before in a paper magazine and IIRC it is actual map of Europe (Yugoslavia is already divided).

But the Czech and Slovak Republics aren't ...

Anyway - pretty immaterial to the point that this ain't a map of September 1st, 1939 as the title claims

I knew I'd find something if I went back far enough. I give you this

Sorry, Judge, no offence intended - couldn't resist it.

No probs Mike. I wasn't actually saying you shouldn't. I have always used the General Discussion forum for exactly that...general discussion. It appears, though, that General Discussion is not what it's for.

The point of my post was that it has recently transpired that the General Discussion forum isn't that at all. It is in fact a General Discussion forum for wargaming. It isn't even for history! Go figure.

I was pointing it out now that we have been told

Thanks for pointing that out, Judge. I'm a bit surprised - I wonder where we go for our general, non-wargaming related discussions, then? Don't really want to go to Doggie's place. Might have to make some real-life friends now. <Polishes up social skills>

Have you considered Usenet's war-historical group ?

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical

A quick look will convince you *nothing* is off-topic there and social skills are optional

No.

Care to address my main point that the map is totally wrong for the date given ?

Cheers, Eddie. Already a long-time lurker and occasional poster as 'thedevilsadvocaat'. Not the same class of people, though - your good self excepted.

LOL - why make an exception for me ? - I feel at home there, always have, it's a bar with regularly scheduled fights and heated discussions among regulars who've been there for over a decade. In here I have to watch how I call bs on what somebody types, over there I just let fly - it's really therapeutic
