game over!

great preformance, chris.

congratulation for another victory.

thx

nah, game over would be when the Allied have lost three dozen carriers on 1/45 but that wonīt happen. I must admit it seems to turn out as a big victory and a serious punch into the Allied commanderīs stomache but hey, itīs only 3/43 afterall.

Paul was a little frustrated (who wouldnīt) after watching last turnīs replay and he sent me an email back it would be time to wave the wite flag and he would quit, as it would take another year until his Navy would be competitive again and it also would give me the needed time to care about my gf.

I answered that while I canīt keep up the insane pace of the game, I would still be able to do more than one turn/day on average and I donīt see the last days that decisive that the Allied have to surrender. I hope the game goes on and Miller sent me a turn yesterday (which I couldnīt run due to not returning home from work before 9:30pm) telling me he ows me to play on at least until I could take Wyndham, then it would be time to surrender. Hopefully the game will go on longer, AE is out of sight it seems (not to talk about the first three patches) and with the recent victory I should stay competitive a couple of months longer. Donīt forget I have only sunk one US CV in this battle, the CVEs get replaced in the dozens, the three Brit CVs arenīt more than 1,3 US Essex class CVs. We will see...

Hereīs the intelligence screen. I will take a screeny of the ship losses also, there have been a lot of enemy carriers and battlewaggons confirmed sunk this turn.

So far everything has worked very well. But you may not forget that while we have shot up the enemy carrier TFs thereīs a reason why they were coming into this area: escorting supply convoys to Wyndham. And have I sunk a single supply carrying AK? NO! The initial reason for my invasion of Northern Australia was the enemyīs invasion of Timor with half a dozen divisions and me having no chance to really react against it on Timor itself. Therefore the risky operation against Northern Australia. I was shocked to see that many enemy troops there, it was a lucky decision to go in against Darwin as this was the base that had the least garisson while Broome and Derby was bristling with enemy divisions due to Allied intel indentifying my plan to land there with massive force. But then I got bogged down at Wyndham against 3000 assault points. Another six Allied divs are now sitting 4 hexes South of Darwin also, stalemated by my troops (that I would need for the assault on Wyndham). If Wyndham receives a couple of tenthousand tons of supply then there is no hope to take the base at any time, in fact the enemy there will regain strenght (as if the troops there would be worns down ) and bombers could fly massive strikes out of it again.

One big step was the capture of Derby last turn, Iīm sure Broome will fall also. Means we will destroy two dozen enemy troops, including a full Australian div, couple of bgds and lots of base forces. Not the huge victory we could achieve at Wyndham with destroying nearly 40 units there but a nice consolation price. And this will enable us to do an organized retreat from Northern Australia if it will become necessary. I still donīt have given up the plan to knock out the divisions on Timor though, but I would need at least 6 divs to do that (by marching East from Dili, just like the Allied marched in over the trails from Lautern). 6 Divs which I donīt have, marching 120 miles over the trails takes time - which I donīt have. Looks hard to achieve at the moment. Iīm sure I can hold out quite some time in Northern Australia though and while the chances to take out Wyndham are only something like 2%, at least our siege there forced the enemy Navy out of itīs holes and gave us the chance to strike hard. So if we will be forced to retreat from Australia in the end, it was still more than worth it. We sunk a lot of precious Allied shipping, destroyed hundreds of enemy aircraft (guess nearly 1500 were lost in the last weeks) and we probably will have destroyed two dozen units at Broome. Not to forget that I stopped the Allied offensive out of there for probably more than 6 months. Without the enemy carriers, it will be hard to supply Timor and as long as the enemy starves there I donīt have to fear anything coming from Lautern.

There is one big question at the moment: what happened to CV Lexington? Lexington took 3 torps, just like Essex but suffered a follow on explosion. Essex moved 6 hexes last turn, I havenīt spotted Lexington!!! So either Lexington was able to move 7 hexes and is now at Wyndham (could that really happen with such a damage?) or it was sunk (no confirmation about that but 59 Dauntless and 26 TBF Avenger were lost on the ground today and they canīt all have been on Essex alone when the ship carries 36 F4F-4), or it wasnīt spotted (which I seriously doubt with all the search aircraft I have nearby. With the losses of SBDs and TBFs a turn ago and the losses on the ground today it could be that Lexington sunk. But at least 12 Dauntless were destroyed on the ground at Derby today. I donīt know, Lexington sunk? I doubt it to be honest. Lexington at Wyndham? Canīt be. So the only thing would be our search aircraft missed out... What I know for sure that CV Yorktown, Hornet and Wasp are now at Wyndham, all undamaged.

The next turn will be very interesting also...

Congratulations Castor, nice destruction you got there.

What was Miller thinking?? Timing and tactics were awful.

Nevertheless, you deserve it. And to spice things up, i'll throw a rather nice martial art video

Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxkr4wS7XqY

Congratulations. It seems that the Allies will only to able to advance under LBA cover for at least another year.

BTW are any of those Allied supply convoys going to Timor?

I have just offered my final surrender to Chris. I have played this game like an idiot and paid the penalty.

In the 14 months (gametime) we have played he has sunk (or would have sunk) in the next day or two: 9 CVs, 7 CVL/E, 4 BBs, numerous smaller ships..........meanwhile I have managed to sink 1BB and 1CL .

Well done Chris, a worthy winner

thanks Paul! Like Iīve mentioned in our email conversation already, I really enjoyed our game and it was an honour to play against you.

I can only recommend Paul as really worthy and reliable opponent to everyone here on the forum, if you look for a great opponent and you get the chance to play against this British football fan then go ahead and take him on.

Cheers Paul!

Who said Japan could not win WW2 ? Castor, any sight of the supply convoy ? If on top of that brilliant aeronaval victory, you can add the destruction of a dozen divisions...

By the way, I couldn't help but notice the AV in Manchuria went up above 16000 now.

Damn', you beat me there, I was thinking the same. It'd be a really interesting end of war, with so many CVs sunk so early, and thus so many Essex-class replacements in early '44.

Very good game, you guys certainly kept it interesting.

Miller had some good manuevers, but I think Mr. Castor Troy really played a good aggressive game and takes the cake here. I'm not sure Miller quite had the large battle techniques down, and with the all or nothing approach towards concentration of Japanese forces, I think Miller ran into some trouble.

Good game! Good game!

I said Japan canīt win WWII. Not in real life, not in the game. Well, you can in the game, but only if you play vs the AI. Against the AI you can take every base on the map but I doubt thatīs fun anyway.

The destruction of a dozen divisions would be nice but the chances to do so are very small. Miller provided me with the chance to strike at his navy and thatīs more than a consolation prize but I doubt that Wyndham will fall.

It might look grim at the moment for the Allied carrier force but there arenīt that many CVs sunk. Well, there are many of the now existing CVs sunk but if you look at the total number of CVs the Allied get over the years then itīs only a small number. At the end of 43, the Allied will have more carrier based ac again that they had 3 days ago. Which means bigbaba can field more carrier based ac than he can stack into two hexes with our stacking limits.

It certainly was a defeat for the Allied and a great victory for the Japanese. BUT it was only one big battle and while we won this aerial/naval battle, the Allied will achieve the goal of this operation: bring supplies to Wyndham. So in fact it was only a phyrric victory for me, even if it was a nice one...

It would be a major victory if I could sink the supply carrying AKs though. THAT would be a victory then...

IMO there was not really much the Allied could do to prevent me from destroying large parts of their carrier force around Darwin - Wyndham as long as they donīt knock out Darwin. I have/had nearly the whole IJN concentrated around Timor, more or less ALL the IJNAF and 80% of the IJAAF. Needless to say that 90% of my available divisions/bgds are operating on Northern Australia at the moment.

But what I also think is that while getting a bloody nose, the Allied could have inflicted losses within my Navy too. If only sinking a couple of BBs at Darwin. Darwinīs airfield was the key to this victory. Send in a dozen Allied BBs in several TFs and all the available CA/CLs for bombardments and letīs see what happens. Use all your available 4Es from Wyndham to attack the airfield during the day (if only to damage 100 Tojos in the air). If there is still Cap after the bombardments and if the bombers get through then the airfield is toast or at least a lot of Tojos are destroyed/damaged. Do this BEFORE you launch your carrier born ac. No question, the enemy BBs would take damage/would be sunk but so would the Japanese. Four British BBs were around Darwin and the British fight at least as good, if not better, than the Japanese at night. There were modern US BBs, also a match for every IJN BB. And with the Allied damage control you even have good chances to save them in Wyndham which is at least a level 5 port.

Show the Japanese that you are willing to accept losses and knock out a couple of their BBs at Darwin. Knock out the airfield at Darwin and... nothing would happen. Perhaps the Allied would lose 2 or 3 BBs, the Japanese lose the same number or ALL of their BBs if the Allied knock out the Tojos. If the Allied carrier borne ac donīt strike Darwin (with nearly 300 Tojos on Cap) then I wouldnīt send in KB. And the land based strikes from Timor or New Guinea would definetely not be enough to seriously harm the Allied carriers. Would we achieve some hits? Surely. Would it be a massacre? Surely not.

I donīt want to jump on Miller, but would I have been in command of the Allied I wouldnīt have thought about having really bad odds to do serious damage. Of course everything still could go wrong (thatīs what I usually assume ) but if you manage to knock out Darwinīs IJAAF fighters you WIN.

Gentlemen!

As Miller was relieved from high command as the Allied commander, my previous opponent, bigbaba, takes over command of the Allied forces again. He will have to watch his first turn that will be at least as hard to watch as 12-7-41 was to watch for him...

have moved out two of my BB TFs to intercept the convoys going to Wyndham. One of them locates the supply convoy (or one of the supply convoys, not sure how many there are really). We surprise the enemy but that doesnīt mean we achieve our goals. The enemy DDs fought very well against our superior surface combat TF and they launch a hell a lot of torps. One hits BB Mutsu which heavily damages the ship. Mutsu is disbanded into Darwinīs port with 34 sys, 28 flt and 4 fires. None of my DDs will sink but another couple of them damaged...

While we kill a couple of DDs, we donīt get a shot at the AKs. Next try tomorrow, again two BB TFs on the hunt, this time also Musashi and Yamato under the command of Adm Tanaka. Would be really interesting if this is the only convoy that brings supplies. Those ships can carry something like 60-65k so if this really is the only supply convoy (which I doubt) then every single ship lost would really hurt.

then the Kates that were moved to Darwin attack a lonly and already damaged CVE... needless to say that the rest of the strike couldnīt locate the CVE anymore...

this is when I really could scream in front of my monitor. KB launches bomber after bomber to attack this CVE that is already sunk... damn it, they should attack the supply convoy. Would really be great if you could priorize target selection...

Strike attacking the remaining US CVs fleeing to the West. As you can see there are several TFs heading full speed West, guess nearly everything that is afloat is now running away at full speed and thatīs definetely the right decision. Spotted a lot of cruisers and destroyers, there are three US CVs (Hornet, Yorktown and Wasp) and a US CVL (Independence) on the run. Better trying to run now as long as many of my bombers are damaged and all my crews are highly fatigued, even if the enemy doesnīt have much left that can fly Cap. Seeing this lousy Cap is a good evidence of how hard the fights were in the last couple of days. Not much left that 3 CVs and 1 CVL can put into the air. Like Iīve said, my crews are really fatigued and hit rate is therfore not that great. But Hornet is hit and suffers an ammo storage explosion so I wonīt complain.

What is depressing though is the number of bombers that attack such super high value targets. Guess I have at least 80+ undamaged high exp Helens at Koepang set to nav attack and 3 decide to take off. There are 60.000 supplies, the af is of course not overstacked and we have an air HQ there...

Since the allied CVs will likely have to refuel soon after a few full speed runs have you thought about sending a SAG into Broome's harbor?

CVL Independence
BB North Carolina

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

this is a TF in the same hex as Yorktown and Hornet is in. Donīt know if Wasp is also in this TF... Washington takes a fish and counter floods... enemy Cap has not much effect anymore but they got one shot at the Nells and all of them turned back so Cap wasnīt totally useless...

not good... Miller set Lightnings from Wyndham to fly LRCAP... they are covering the TF with all the fuel loaden AOs. I would fly cover with everything I have over the supply carrying AKs though...

more of the silly targetting routine... we start attacking the DDs that were split off from the supply convoy due to damage... total overkill and there are far more important targets around...

AO Cimarron, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Mugford
AO Cache

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

even though our Tojos are high experienced, they have no chance... they are on escort, they got bounced on and on and on and the far less exp Lightnings achieve a 11:1 kill rate... we will see many of those encounters in the next months I fear... and we wonīt have a really competitive fighter until the Frank shows up... lol, that will be in mid 44...

damage done here wasnīt worth the losses...

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 71

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Beaufort I bombing at 15000 feet
3 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 15000 feet

this attack doesnīt concern us at all... those bombers are coming from Broome and Broome will soon be in Japanese hands. Our tanks will arrive there in three days, curious what we will encounter there, other than level 9 forts and base forces (hopefully nothing else... )

guess Miller wanted to go sure that this airfield canīt be used to launch strikes on his fleeing TFs... good decision. But I donīt have air support there (could be flown in with Tabbies though) and the airfield was quite damaged before this strike anyway (that was the reason I didnīt fly in bombers). Now it is totally out of operational state though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 34,83

Allied aircraft losses
Brewster 339D: 9 destroyed

Allied Ships
DD Laffey
AK Empire Voice

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Also the supply convoy is covered by LRCAP from Wyndham. Only by Dutch Brewsters but they donīt perform that bad as they take down 3 of the Tojos for no loss. Usually the Brewsters lost something like 15:1, their exp must have been terrible, donīt know about their exp they had today... This is the MAIN target for all my forces, but I canīt tell that the targetting routine...

afternoon strike from Koepang, again against the TF with Hornet and Yorktown. Again I can only shake my head about the number of bombers, this is a wet fart when I look at the bomber numbers at Koepang. But considering the number of bombers and the fatigue of the crews, this was an amazing result. Itīs a pity that we split our attacks between both carriers. Hornet was hit in the morning by a torp, suffered an ammo storage explosion and now takes another torp and suffers again an ammo storage explosion. Should be quite damaged now, one or two more torps would probably done her in. Yorktown takes three torps but no follow on explosions and while the ship is on fire, it doesnīt even show up as heavily damaged.

So what will bigbaba do with this TF now? Bringing back Yorktown and Hornet to Wyndham (would mean they will be in attack range tomorrow also, probably for two days), or moving them towards Perth, then they will perhaps still be in range tomorrow. But itīs a loooong way to Perth and I doubt that both would make it, only with a hell a lot of luck. IMO a move towards Wyndham would mean both will be sunk. CV Lexington is also at Wyndham, at least this is what Miller stated in his last email. This attack really made the overall situation for the Allied totally catastrophic. With bad weather over Koepang or a worse hit rate, the Allied would have lost a lot, but the would still have Yorktown, Hornet, Wasp and CVL Independence that could have got away. Now it really looks grim...

why risking the whole USN and RN to bring supplies to Wyndham? The troops there donīt need any supplies at all, they get an insane adjusted av anyway while we donīt even bring down the forts. This was our fourth attack and all that happens is that our losses are getting higher with every attack... thatīs just crazy. We have used up nearly 50.000 supplies from Darwin already, thatīs surely a couple of times more than the Allied even had at Wyndham at the start of the siege and they still donīt suffer at all... nice die rolls...

wonder if the six Allied divisions four hexes South of Darwin will ever dare to attack. Doubt they are in good supply. My divisions are, they are drawing supplies from our huge storages at Darwin while the Allied have to draw them from Alice Springs over a dozen of hexes of roads and rail. And I doubt that Alice Springs has a lot of supplies anyway. So the next place would be in the Townsville area, probably too far away...

I dontīt have surface combat groups in the area of Broome. Well I have lots of heavy cruisers at Koepang but I surely wonīt send them in against modern US BBs. Just one hit that slows them down and the enemy torp bombers would eat them as soon as the sun sets.

Iīm still going with the motto of inflicting as much losses as possible but not at all costs. Yorktown and Hornet are damaged now, if they sink thatīs great. If they donīt sink, I can live with it. I donīt want to risk a couple of heavy cruisers just to have a small chance to get a shot at them.

Now letīs post some really nice screenshots. We start off with the BB/CV/CVL that are confirmed sunk.

So far there were BB South Dakota, Warspite and Valiant confirmed sunk. I guess BB Revenge could be dead also, took three torps. Only US CV that is confirmed sunk is CV Essex, didnīt have a long carreer. But Lexington took several torps, Hornet is heavily damaged and Yorktown too. Chances for those three CVs to survive arenīt that good. Would mean 5 US CVs sunk, with Saratoga and Enterprise that were lost earlier. The British should have one left somewhere I guess, arenīt there four of them around at this date? But why using the totally obsolete CVL Hermes then that was also sunk?

Guess this list will look even better in two months time because by then FOW sunk ships will also show up and we will see what will happen in the next days...

And here are the CVE losses that went down with the British CVs. But those CVEs will be replaced in the dozens...
