Just a note about the Brewster Buffalo. It is my imprsssion that the Buffalo got its bad reputation because it was less manuverable than the Zero. But one must remember that the Japanese Zero was one on the most agile planes of WWII.

The Finnish made excellent use from the Buffalo.

But they also made excellent use of some mediocre fighters too, such as the Morane MS.406 French Fighter, and the Fiat G.50 Italian Fighter. I wonder how they became so good riding such bad planes.

Maybe their opponents were poor quality russian pilots, I don't know. The russians had the I-16 type 24 that was a superior plane compared to the French & Italian fighters.

Anyone here with a clue as to how the Finns dominated the Russians so much ?

Who was? Or what was?

The Sherman was known as the one shot lighter, the Ronson and the Tommy Cooker because it caught fire after being hit almost anywhere. There is a documented case of a Sherman catching fire after being hit on the drive sprocket.

Good Hunting.

Planes are like tanks. They are a balance of power, maneuverability, firepower and speed.

To see how a plane stacks up just looking at them sitting on the ground is pretty easy.

Big engine? Fast and powerful.

Long thin wings? Very maneuverable.

Big engine, short stubby wings? Fast but not maneuverable. That's the category of the Brewster Buffalo. Most successful American fighters fit that description. The P-47, F4F, F6F, F4U, F8F, P-36, Brewster Buffalo...etc...

A few tried to be maneuver fighters instead of speed/power fighters. The P-39, P-40 and P-51 are the most notable of those. Interestingly the P-51 wasn't made for the USAAF but for the RAF whose combat planes fit that model much more closely than USAAF fighters did.

Why the Finns did better is two fold.

1) They were better trained. The VVS pilots were in about the same state of training and readiness and the Soviet tank forces were.

2) They had better tactics. The Soviet pilots with little training were able to do only rudimentary combat formations the Finns on the other hand were well trained and very good in combat.

Good Hunting.

14) What is the largest successful military operation of all time?

Overlord.

No, Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious operation of all time, and of course it was successful, but far from the largest land operation, successful or not.

Good Hunting.

MR

"The Great Patriotic War"?

GSB

As a theater of war that would absolutely be correct. From a Soviet point of view and since you used the Soviet term for the Eastern Front I'm thinking that's the direction you're coming from.

However, the Great Patriotic War is not a single operation but many. An operation covers at most a few months. Operation Barbarossa covered only 6 months.

The most successful operation in WWII covered only a few weeks. Not years.

Hope that helps a little.

Good Hunting.

Easy question: what was the previous successful cross-Channel opposed landing prior to the Allied landings on June 6 1944?

Operation Jubilee at Dieppe. Depending on what you consider to be successful. The landings were successful. Staying on the continent proved more difficult.

Here are those of the original 50 questions that haven't been answered yet and some clues.

2) What was Patton's Headquarters known as? Has a connection with answer 44.

7) Which was the highest scoring American tanker? What was the name of the tank he rode in? He served in NWE from June 1944. He was in three tanks two of them were named the same...the second one had a "2" in the name...go figure.

The most Allied bombed place in the world was NOT in Germany.

14) What is the largest successful military operation of all time? It was in the largest land theater of the war.

26) By the end of the war Canada was making 60% of which Allied machinegun? How many Allied machineguns were there???

30) Which American fighter was shown to be the most maneuverable during test trials at the end of the war? It was not an early war fighter.

33) What did the term "rock soup" mean? The term means to make soup out of water and adding a rock, then you get other things to add to it. Where you start with nothing and end up with soup...what military meaning does that have? I'm surprised that nobody seems to know this one. It's a well known phrase. At least I thought it was.

36) Who was Finland's highest scoring ace?

38) Which German Panzer Divisions used the Pz35(t) as their main equipment during the fighting in Russia? 6th Panzer is one of them...what was the other? There was one more.

40) What was the single most effective weapon that airforces of all nations employed during WWII not counting the atomic bomb? After the atomic bomb what air delivered weapons system caused the most damage during the war?

41) Who was the first foreign soldier to capture an intact Soviet T-34 tank and drive it? He was not German.

42) Which German Panzer Division entered Russia by driving submerged under a river? They trained for another operation that involved the use of submerged tanks.

43) What does the term "cat fur" refer to when talking about German tanks? This is a reference made by Guderian late in the war. But what was he talking about?

46) The T-34 was the most produced vehicle by the Soviet Union. What was the Soviet Union's second most produced vehicle? It wasn't an early war or late war tank.

47) The British tried to deploy the Mosquito aircraft to the Pacific theater. Why was it called back? The mosquito was made of all wood construction. The Pacific is hot and humid.

48) Which Allied fighter is credited with destroying more Axis aircraft than any other? This fighter served in more than one air operational theater. Theaters being considered are North Africa, Italy, England, North West Europe, Eastern Front, China/India/Burma, Pacific Ocean area.

49) Which is the only unit to have fought at Normandy, Arnhem, Aachen, the Huertgen Forest, in the Ardennes offensive, at the Reichswald and in the Ruhr Pocket? I've told you earlier the unit is not an infantry unit. The unit is NOT American.

You guys have done a good job. These hints will help with some of them. Others there are no clues that will help that I know of. You either know them or you don't.

While Googling for the answer isn't allowed going to other sites may help. Sites like:

33) Yes, generally speaking. But there was a specific application of rock soup that is famous. What is that application where it applies to WWII?

43) Guderian was referring to the tanks with cat names. He wasn't referring to their armour being extremely thick.

I am sure you are correct in general. But on the subject of the Brewster Buffalo I turned to Wikipedia to have a look if my memory was that bad. It turns out we are both right in some way. At least according to the ace "Pappy" Boyington.

Cut from wikipedia:
Both the F2A-1 and the F2A-2 variants of the Brewster were liked by early Navy and Marine pilots, including Pappy Boyington, who praised the good turning and maneuvering abilities of the aircraft."Pappy" Boyington observed: "But the early models, before they weighed it all down with armor-plate, radios, and other [equipment], they were pretty sweet little ships. Not real fast, but the little [aircraft] could turn and roll in a phone booth."

Who was the "one-shot lighter" ?

Who was? Or what was?

The Sherman was known as the one shot lighter, the Ronson and the Tommy Cooker because it caught fire after being hit almost anywhere. There is a documented case of a Sherman catching fire after being hit on the drive sprocket.

Good Hunting.
