I just want to check my understanding of support troops.

I believe support troops are there primarily to reduce fatigue, reduce disruption and repair/heal disabled units. One support squad is required for every normal squad or gun or tank, etc.

1) What happens to an engineer unit operating without adequate support (for instance, a engineer unit building a base by itself)? Does it just build up fatigue until it is essentially useless or can it continue on its own for a while?

2) Do HQ units use their support squads to assist just additional units within the same hex are can they provide support to units within a certain radius?

Hello...

Yes, support troops are there to help combat troops. Air support troops are there to service aircraft. One support section is needed for each gun, vehicle or combat squad. One air support section is needed for each aircraft. If the hex has too little support, bad things can happen.

The engineer unit will build airfields or ports, if assigned this duty. They will also repair airfield or port damage instead of building these, if these facilities are damaged. Without proper support, the engineers will eventually become disabled, one by one. Once the number of disabled becomes greater than the number of enabled, some will start being destroyed. Support troops simulate the cooks, mechanics, armorers, doctors and nurses, supply people and the like. These are needed to keep the engineers and combat forces fed, clothed, fat and happy. Some of these folk are in the HQ units, which can apply support to units in the same hex. You will note that the Japanese have fewer support troops than the Allies.

Good Gaming...
