Have you thought about sending a couple of MSWs on a suicide mission to Wyndham's harbor (or one hex away if you are feeling lucky)? They probably will die horribly but it might help reduce further mine hits.

they won´t get there. They only move 2 or in the best case 3 hexes a day and as soon as they´re within 4 hexes of Wyndham they will be attacked by LBA. And I´m not really a fan of such suicide missions, not even if there are only MSWs involved. The supply convoy will unload unharmed there and I won´t go there again. It´s just not worth it, the mine hits there are a joke.

Japanese Ships
AO Ondo
AO Iro
DD Numakaze
DD Namikaze
DD Nokaze
DD Shikinami

Allied Ships
SS KXVIII, hits 5

AOs are bringing fuel to Koepang, I´m running desperately low on fuel on the whole map. Never experienced such a fuel shortage like in this campaign. Total fuel on the map is now only 1.400.000 and that´s near to nothing when you think about how dispersed it is. The sub takes a hit and four near misses...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese max assault: 106 - adjusted assault: 103

Allied max defense: 8 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 103 to 1

Japanese ground losses:

three of my divs have entered the hex where the four Allied divs retreated to South of Darwin and I have ordered a shock attack tomorrow. I don´t expect much though... hopefully at least we won´t take that many casualties... my other three inf units should enter the hex tomorrow but can´t join the attack...

Yet another great day for the Empire!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/01/43

Japanese Ships
AO Notoro, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Numakaze
DD Namikaze
DD Nokaze
DD Shikinami

Allied Ships
SS KXVIII, hits 2, on fire

grmpf... The damned TF that arrived yesterday obviously didn´t dock at the port, otherwise it would have been immune to sub attacks (level 4 port). What the hell, do I have to check every sh*t now manually??? There go 8000 tons of fuel... and the ship has only a small chance to survive as it´s burning heavily...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Pamakasan , at 24,66

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-43-IIa Oscar bombing at 2000 feet

it will take three months to bring all my fighter daitais back to the strenght they had before the attacks on the enemy carriers along Australia´s North coast. But it will definetely take Miller longer to replace his carriers...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 37th USA Division, at 36,89

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49 Helen x 37
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
40 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 6000 feet

good to see three out of the four divs being attacked as we´re shock attacking later in the day...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day Air attack on TF at 7,91

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 23
A6M3a Zero x 15
B5N Kate x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 5 damaged
B5N Kate: 2 damaged

Allied Ships

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
3 x B5N Kate bombing at 10000 feet

after refulling at Koepang we have set KB to full speed towards Perth to catch the two undamaged retreating British BBs (only possible if they run out of fuel) and while KB never launched a strike the last two days against spotted TFs, today we end up in range of the heavily damaged US CV Hornet... that´s it for the mighty ship! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 7,91

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 21

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 1 destroyed, 7 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Hornet, Bomb hits 12, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet

again, we launch several strikes instead of one combined...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 7,91

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 24
A6M3a Zero x 2
B5N Kate x 24

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A Val: 4 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Hornet, Bomb hits 21, on fire, heavy damage
DD Arunta

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
4 x B5N Kate bombing at 10000 feet

this is already in the afternoon, the aircraft carrier is still afloat, taking bomb after bomb. Never have seen 64 bomb hits (around 20 didn´t penetrate the belt armor) on an enemy carrier, the damned ship just refused to sink. But in the end it slipped beneath the waves. None of the other spotted TFs were attacked and that´s once again depressing...

but now the funny thing, Miller asked me this when he sent this turn back: I am suprised you did not send the KB after Yorktown and Hornet.......they would be dead by now if you had............ looks like he wasn´t aware of the fact that KB was so close to one of his damaged carriers already. He didn´t spot KB and I don´t know what he thought it would be when there were Alfs and Jakes spotting his TFs the last two turns...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 36,89

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 61406 troops, 575 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 1574

Defending force 40299 troops, 537 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 964

Japanese max assault: 2068 - adjusted assault: 386

Allied max defense: 628 - adjusted defense: 598

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
927 casualties reported
Guns lost 31
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses:
256 casualties reported
Guns lost 21

now how does that work? We were more than 100% supplied, max disruption was 34, our bombers flew 3 attacks on the four enemy units and while our adjusted av looks horrible the enemy still gets nearly his full av. The enemy must have been highly disrupted (retreated two days ago and due to air attacks) and probably was far from fully supplied as you lose all supply in a retreat. That´s it, doubt we can do anything now, our troops are now 70+ disrupted and the enemy will be able to move South. Once again it seems Miller is the one with the super lucky die rolls. But after the loss of Hornet today I guess this happening here isn´t that much motivating...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15843 troops, 182 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1867

Defending force 281187 troops, 1553 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 6693

Allied ground losses:
9 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Thursday Island

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 6600 troops, 31 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 148

Defending force 500 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 9

Japanese max assault: 106 - adjusted assault: 202

Allied max defense: 7 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 202 to 1

Japanese ground losses:

American CV Hornet sunk by superior IJN naval forces! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

USS Hornet, a 19,800 ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was constructed at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in October 1941, she spent the next four months shaking down in the Atlantic. Transferred to the Pacific in March 1942, Hornet was immediately employed on the Doolittle raid. On 18 April 1942, she launched 16 Army B-25 bombers to attack Japan, a strike that caused relatively little damage, but which had enormous strategic implications.

Hornet was then sent to the South Pacific to reinforce U.S. units there following the Battle of Coral Sea, but was recalled to Pearl Harbor in mid-May. She then took part in the Battle of Midway, on 4-6 June, during which her planes shared in the sinking of the Japanese cruiser Mikuma.

In August 1942, Hornet returned to the South Pacific to join in the fight for Guadalcanal. During much of September and October, she was the only operational U.S. aircraft carrier available to oppose the Japanese in that area. On 26 October 1942, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, her planes attacked and badly damaged the Japanese carrier Shokaku. In return, however, Hornet received heavy bomb and torpedo damage, necessitating her abandonment. Though accompanying U.S. destroyers attempted to scuttle her, she remained afloat until torpedoed and sunk by Japanese ships early in the morning of 27 October.

all my units entered the hex with the four Allied divs 5 hexes South of Darwin now and I have ordered a shock attack for tomorrow. Those units that suffered from the 0:1 shock attack last time are still at 50% disruption but if the enemy again only gets a 600 adjusted av then I´m confident to overcome the defenders...

I´m working on opening another pilot training school on Mindanao. Air support is moving to Cagayan as I have more daitais in need of training than I have room at my bases I´ve been using for training so far...

this is training and has a useful purpose. Who knows what Miller is really up to with Lautern, better make sure to see it remain 100% damaged... troops are prepping for Lautern already...

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

four enemy divisions are forced to retreat for the second time! That is good news, we will try to follow them further South. If we manage to force them to retreat four of five times then there´s nothing left to really fear. Will take nearly a year to rebuild those divs so we won´t see them before mid 44 again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15835 troops, 180 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1867

Defending force 283117 troops, 1569 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 6734

seeing Chungking´s av going up 20 points each turn is concerning me a bit. But being in an urban hex makes me still confident that we don´t have to fear anything here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wyndham

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 7415 troops, 252 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4948

with the thousands of tons of supplies, the Allied units at Wyndham are now gaining strenght too of course...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Koepang at 28,77

Allied Ships
SS Sawfish

ghost sub attack...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Darwin at 36,84

Japanese Ships
DD Hatsushima
DD Kawakaze
DD Shinonome
DD Yugiri
DD Yayoi
DD Yuzuki

Allied Ships
SS Pogy, hits 10, on fire, heavy damage

my ASW TF is target of Pogy but the sub missed. In return it takes a hit and 9 near misses. Pogy was later confirmed sunk after being hit by a Helen on nav search... We currently have 56 Allied subs confirmed sunk. That´s not that much considering the fact that we´ve sunk more than 2 dozen subs during our port attacks on Manila and Pearl Harbour. Means we have only been able to sink another 2 dozen subs in 15 months of war. This is mostly due to the fact that my DDs have been more or less useless all the time. Only 11 subs were confirmed sunk by DCs...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Koepang at 28,77

Japanese Ships
PC Hachijo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
APD APD-36
PC Iki
PC Oki
PC Etoforu
PC Kunashiri

Allied Ships
SS Sawfish, hits 7

sent in one of my best ASW TFs (when it comes down to ASW value) and one of my modern PCs is hit hard. The PC is in high danger of being sunk, chance to survive perhaps 10%. Disbanded into port at Koepang (level 4), nav HQ and AR present. 7 near misses on Sawfish will probably mean the sub will return to it´s home port...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Madras , at 18,21

Allied aircraft
Vengeance I x 16

Allied aircraft losses
Vengeance I: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Vengeance I bombing at 2000 feet

I guess Miller newly received this dive bomber squadron on Ceylon with the default setting "airfield attack". The bombers chose to attack Madras where we have a big base force sitting...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Pamakasan , at 24,66

Japanese ground losses:

Guns lost 1

Port hits 2
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Kittyhawk I bombing at 2000 feet

Miller moved in fighters again... guess I will have to strenghten my flak defenses here. Increasing flak defense over Luganville forced him to halt his training runs there...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 9,88

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 23
A6M3a Zero x 17
B5N Kate x 24

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AO Platte, Bomb hits 24, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
4 x B5N Kate bombing at 10000 feet

KB sinks a damaged AO on his way back into the SRA. As I don´t really fear an Allied offensive now, it´s time for R&R and all the upgrades. Guess we will have six months now to bring everything back into perfect shape. Hopefully this will also mean that we can stock some fuel as my fuel levels are really, really low...

Defending force 144055 troops, 1075 guns, 359 vehicles, Assault Value = 3058

Allied ground losses:
26 casualties reported

more than a dozen art units are doing a whopping 26 casualties...

pretty boring turns now, guess this is what we will mostly see for the next couple of months. Perhaps Miller will start some limited action somewhere. Air attacks out of Cairns or Townsville against PM, Gili Gili or Thursday Island comes to mind. But I doubt we will see any major invasion without carrier support. I will work on further increasing our defenses in the Pacific and I have now also decided to attack the SOVIET UNION! I have 15.000 assault points already prepped for their targets and I´ve started to move air and ground units into Manchuko to further increase our offensive capability. Guess we will see the start of hostilities against Russia in two months.

Well, good luck with that cause, I'm interested to see how the IJA does against the russian 64 plane squadrons- hopefully with obsolete fighters though. You seem to do well enough with ground campaigns, and against an immobile defense I'm sure you'll accomplish much.

Doubt that the Soviets will have a higher exp than 60 so hopefully my Tojos will eat them alive (if they get airborne). The plan is as follows: surprise attack from three of my airfields on the two or three biggest Soviet airfields in the area. This should knock out a couple of hundred enemy aircraft on the first day, leaving most of the rest either damaged or hopefully with very low morale. The enemy won´t be immobile though, as is done in most (if not all) PBEMs I will of course grant Miller some time to move his ground units around as soon as I have activated the Soviets. I will move in, activate them and then will keep my LCUs static for two weeks, this should give Miller enough time to move his LCUs around on the railline. I will keep on using my airforce though.

Unfortunately, Soviet fighters are FAR from being obsolete! They have some very good fighters and they would eat my Tojos alive if flown by equally skilled pilots, they lack good bombers though.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/06/43

SS Tinosa

but the damned sub gets another chance and this time hits with two torps. Once again the big escort is totally useles... The excellent damage model of WITP leaves the big AK behind with 43 sys, 48 flt and 13 fires. No way the ship will sink, will be disbanded into Osaka´s port tomorrow. While it is annoying to see subs around Japan, it´s definetely the worst place for Allied subs to operate. Why? Because when the hit something off the coast, most times the ship will be disbanded into a big port immediately, making it very hard to actually sink the ships. Would be far better for Miller to operate his subs in the SRA. I won´t complain...

yup, as Haguro suffered a MAGAZINE EXPLOSION. And while other players seemed to have made different experiences, in MY special WITP edition, mag explosions ALWAYS immediately result in a sunk ship. BIG BOOOOOM -> SUNK...

The possibility for a mag explosion is very looooow, so like I´ve said, Miller really was lucky here sinking Haguro just outside of Darwin (level 6 port, nav HQ and AR) with one torp. oh well

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

really interesting how much you lose due to "strange happenings" in the game. Due to a "naval movement flaw" I´ve lost a light cruiser, due to the not working follow unit order I had problems in the past. Today, two of our divs get shredded South of Darwin because two units moved, the other four units show 75 miles now. God damn it, there are so many bugs left...

the result is of course devastating. Not just that my troops didn´t move in but moved 75 miles in a 60 mile hex I also get a fridging bad adjusted av. Just can´t belive Miller really achieved a 2:1... If we would have had just 18 av more than he would have only got a 1:1. Why we get such a bad ajusted av is beyond me anyway, the units were more than fully supplied and very low disrupted. Once again, he´s the luckier one of us two it seems... my troops lost 20% of their strenght and it will take 4 months to rebuild them in Japan. Thank you!

You needn't complain about your ASW efforts.
In scen. 12 - that I started with bigbaba -  he sinks one ASW ship per turn and I don't have any success...

I now withdraw all of my ASW forces as they prooved to be useless and hope for trained LB groups in the future...

I moved the MSWs to Derby to clear the minefield there, even though I don´t have to as I won´t send a single ship there. So I get what I deserve. My MSW were spotted yesterday so Miller set some of his bombers to nav attack 6 hexes and he can do it without fearing anything. Didn´t move fighters to Derby (even though I have plenty of them in the area and have enough air support at Derby) and Darwin is 7 hexes from Wyndham (where I have the BB TF and 250 Tojos) so it was easy for Miller. What was surprising and shocking at the same time for me is the hit rate of the Mitchells. My 80+ exp Helens performed awfully in the nav attacks on Allied shipping a couple of weeks ago, so I didn´t reall fear the Allied level bombers. Proved to be wrong and pay for my obsolete execution of this "operation"... but I don´t really care about those MSWs, they a) respawn and b) they are useless for anything except mine sweeping anyways...

we somewhat take revenge for the loss of 10 MSW today, SS Sculpin is attacked by one of my premium ASW TFs. A Type 95 and a Type 2 hit and 8 near misses leave the sub heavily damaged. Not that far to Wyndham (level 5 port) but it will take the sub a week to go there if it can only go 1 hex a phase. Perhaps it will sink the next days but my hopes aren´t high if a sub isn´t sunk immediately...

Allied ground losses:

what really surprises me is the fact that the Allied av at Wyndham isn´t going up as fast as I had expected it to. But the enemy will probably have supplies for 4 - 6 months. Would be interesting how much supply 150.000 Allied troops need per month. There are also probably 200 fighters on Cap. The enemy supply convoy surely brought 60.000 supplies, when looking at my deliberate attacks there surely still was supply at Wyndham so we´re talking about something like 70-85.000 supplies there. If 150.000 troops need 20.000 supplies a month then they will run out in 4 months. If they need less...

in either case, there is no chance to take Wyndham at any time IMO...

Castor, I thought Miller had withdrawn and that Ambassador would be handling the Allied side.  Did something change?  I scrolled back several pages to try to find information, but didn't see anything.

Hi!

After the first shock of losing a US CV and the British ones Miller wanted to throw in the towel but wanted to give me some more rounds fun until I would take Wyndham. The next turn, I hit Yorktown and Hornet which then was too much for him and he told me there´s no sense to go on (again I think this is more of a "first shock"). Then bigbaba agreed to take over again, the command then changed to Ambassador and as he needed some time to do his "first turn" I was not sure if he would go on and I posted that on the forum. Then Miller sent me an email that the game would lure him in again and he would like to go on regardless of any Allied losse and he already sent the next turn with his reply. So the game goes on with Miller as he´s responsible for the Allied situation...

it doesn´t make sense at all to use Japanese escorts. My merchant navy isn´t decimated because I use the same obsolete strategy the Japanese did in real life, I´m losing my ships because the escorts are 100% useless. I don´t expect them to sink the subs, but at least they could sometimes keep them from attacking... perhaps 1 out of 7 times they attack the sub first...

I´ve feared this attack for long already, unfortunately it goes in exactly when I moved in some bombers too. 15.000ft attack, means my flak is useless. There are at least 6 dozen flak guns, including 48x4,7 inch DP guns from a CD unit and a big base force. Attack an Allied base with 48 guns of that calibre and you lose 1/3 of your bombers coming in at 15.000ft with the rest being damaged...

Canton is one of the expected targets for the next Allied offensive...
