i played the first battle in the utah to the rhine campaign. it is great! i selected a reduced infantry company and a reduced sherman76 force, with artillery support. i set the auxiliaries to computer contol. the us advanced and easily defeated a halftrack, armored car (with cannon!), and infantry attack only to commit its armor reserves to face and attack a northern pz4, stg3, and jpz4 force attacking from the flank. no sooner were these dealt with when a powerful pz5 and pz4 force attacked from the soft underbelly!. the us armor swung south to flank and destroy this threat but 2 panthers circled the wagons along with a crew and a mg and held out for 5 turns. damn! after these threats were neutralized: a headlong dash into st mere eglise to beat the clock. but wham! one of the last 3 us sherman gets bushwacked by a hidden at pillbox! noooOOooOoooOOOOOOooOoOOOOO! ge infantry surviving the artillery ponding jump up and slow the us infantry just one hex and thats enough to run out of time! draw. excellent scenario, i expect the rest of the campaign will be fantastic. i even like the stuccato sound of the us regular infantry weapons. m1's are nice guns. however, im going to start the campaign over, this time taking direct control of the auxiliaries. this will give me a more coordinated attack. i will now be prepared for the enemy, knowing their attack axes, but its my free time and my game anyway, so whos going to stop me? however, i will pretend i dont know where theyre going to come from. i have one question: how come a lot of the us units, core and auxiliaries alike, automatically revert to defend mode after moving, while others require an expenditure of orders to change stance? is it because of elite status or experience? thanks for all the fine work, wild bill and the rest!

Thanks, Ismael. We'll try to keep 'em comin! There are a few more good ones in the works. The units reset to defend probably because the scenario was originally set to defend rather than a meeting engagement. My reasoning was that in the first half of the battle you are defending against advancing German units headed to Utah Beach. Once the German attack is beaten off, you are then to proceed into St Mere Eglise and take the town. During testing the fact that the US stance was defend confused some testers so I reset it to meeting engagement as 'type of scenario' I imagine vestiges of the earlier setting are still there. WB, I finally got around to playing your Utah campaign (well, the first scenario, anyway)...but only was able to "get it" after I upgraded to v4.4. I guess a helmet fire kept me from doing things right before. The counterattacks / delayed attacks from the northern and southern groups really suprised the hell out of me. Thankfully I had some Bazooka teams spread about the map, and they were quite effective at reducing the number of German armor. The town of St Mere Eglise was quite a fight. I pounded the living SNOT out of that town with my 8-inch and 105mm howitzers. It got so bad I had to use the "U" key to remind myself which hexes I was going for... smashed buildings, smoke, fire. Oh what a glorious sight. Then I ran into the 400,000 german Engineer units that seemed to have survived! They really do a number on you when you're only a few hexes away with those MP44s... Best I could manage was a draw. Great start to the scenario! -Andy

It will get better (or worse ) depending on your point of view, Andy! I'm glad you guys are enjoying it. There still some hard fighting ahead of you. Good hunting! Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games
