i would love to buy this, but i'm worried about the UI-non widescreen support that was found in CCWAR (hence me not playing that game much). hopefully you guys fixed this.

Don't go and order it on my say so....that is just from what I recall from playing the original CC3...get some official word first...failing that, wait till I buy it and I'll let you know. If it's out tomorrow, I'll be picking it up.

Ok, I read the features page. It sounds cool. A lot more cool than the other re-makes, but until I read some proper reviews by real gamers all the re-makes are on my 'avoid' list. Especially after the CCMT totally crapped the bed.

When is Strategy 3 Tactics getting a website? It has said "coming soon" for a year, or so.

Too early to say, but in the one mission I played, I did notice Axis forces hiding and then ambushing. I noticed the Axis trying to get forward to retake the objectives I took. I noticed Axis hiding or going quiet when they were under fire and I noticed them trying to get to cover.

I noticed my troops stopping advancing and going to ground when they came under heavy fire.

I did notice something I seem to remember from past iterations of this series...trying to get troops to deploy smoke is like trying to plat snot. I gave several commands to different infantry units (sometimes under fire, sometimes not) to lay smoke (the range was green) and not one did.

Mortar fire was fairly innacurate, but not infuriatingly so and they didn't have LoS, so probably as expected. Aircraft strike and ship bombardment effects were cool and on target.

The Axis forces were outnumbered initially anyway, and seemed to request a truce at the appropriate time.

All I can say after that one mission is I wasn't disappointed and was pleased with how it played out. It also looked quite crisp at 1280*1-24 on my 17" LCD (I know I'm trying to persuade the wife I need a 22" screen, but she seems to think size doesn't matter !).

Just played the same battle I played last night as Germans, just for Dodger.

They didn't do as I did and asked for a truce about when they should've.

Again, noticed the same things...advancing and going to ground when they should...advancing to take victory locations, even holding on to some by putting troops in defend mode. I found this out when I sneaked one of my units across some open ground from one building to another to retake a victory location I saw allied troops leave...but they hadn't left it totally.

I think I had the Allied troops on Veteran and Axis on Line (like last night...I left the settings as they were...nice to see the game remembers the setting).

I didn't notice an Allied Airstrike or Bombardment, but that isn't to say they didn't use it...just that I didn't see it. Thinking about it, one of my Pak guns was taken out...and that was at the rear, so I reckon that might've been from one of those.

I'll play the same mission tonight when I get home (from work ) and ramp the allies up to Elite.

Incidentally, what is the effect or ramping up the AI? --Just looked it up and Recruit level provides better forces with higher morale??? That seems a bit backward?! Does that mean for a tougher fight against the allies, I have to set them to Recruit??

The less experience a side has the more help they get;

number of squads
quality of squads
number of support strikes available (air, mortar and naval) in a operation or campaign

So if I played Axis and made Allies Veteran or Elite, then I am making it easier for me? So if I want to have a real battle against the AI, I should reduce the level (sounds weird saying it like this!)? So Allies on recruit will give me a tougher fight?

I'm kinda confused...I mean, I would've thought making the Enemy as Elite would've made them tougher?! Am I looking at that control wrong? I'm linking it to quality of soldiers (because of the terms used...Veteran, Elite)

I'm a little confused

The slider refers to the skill of the commander (you)

Consider your self Highly skilled (Elite)... so you need little assistance

Consider the AI Brain Dead (Recruit)... assistance required

I would like to say thanks to the people who contributed maps etc for free ... and the ideas that help breathe new life into the game :)

HERE! HERE! Well put. Some very generous folks in our community.

Marc and Andrew thanks for trying to impart some sense into the conversation about the scenario editor. Feel like you're talking to the wall yet?

Nomada, Thanks for your kind words about my work. Not to belabor the point/discussion for all those following the thread patiently waiting for it to return to something worth reading ... but here was one iteration I did to try to get the active operational area image to fit underneath the scenario editor diamonds. I did several variations to try to get this to work and I'm sure everybody on the team gave it some thought too and realized I'd done the homework. This imo was far worse than what we had to use. The attached bears no useful resembelance to the game strat. What's in the game is the best of all available options which were extremely limited.

Hey I would love to see an example of how you can improve upon what we used. Post it up. I'm not too proud to admit when I'm wrong. Just keep in mind the diamonds must be separated by the distance you see them in the scenario editor at minimum otherwise you'll not be able to select the BG units without accidentally clicking the adjacent icons. Also you are not allowed to change the image size or proportions.

The attached in my opinion looks like absolute crap. The slug that ate New York. Not to mention with all the details distorted it has no useful purpose other than to serve as a background to the diamonds. So at best a feel good thing. Any details that would give you clues are gone.

hey judge, i'm axis right now, the allies are recruit/always follow orders.

and i must say i'm impressed. i really, really wanted to love this game, and unlike cross of iron or WAR -- i actually do!

the a.i. isn't as aggressive as they're in CC2 -- but they're still doing what you've noted. defending, amassing, dispatching out scouts, and their vehicle -- although not utilized as i'd hoped, are still running around trying to participate in the melee. that's more than i could hope for, coming from the lactuster a.i.s in WAR and previous installments and remakes.

but the UI main menu's res is still crappy in my hdtv/hdmi-to-laptop set up. at least putting it on WINDOW mode alleviates the problem as the game resorts to the same color bit of my desktop.

can't wait what the next patch will give this game, but i'm a happy camper, glad cc series is finally heading back to what it made it great. good a.i.

and oh yeah, i still see loaders in MG units racking up skills instead of gunners. that's the only qualm i gots right now other than the mid-par a.i. mobile tactics.

edit: and i forgot, the a.i. vehicles or otherwise are still a little awkward when crossing the bridge, hope ye folks can fix that.

and the old qualm i've had for CC is -- people not going through the doors of buildings, and no options of abandoning guns/vehicles/mortars for their respective units (perfect for momentary taking cover).

can some of the devs respond to these as to enlighten beclouded eyes?

first thing I notice, is you know, the Airborne, did carry ammo with them, even more so, when you expect to be out of supply for a few days, until the landing troops get to you

also seems a little backward, AI in the open, you in a building, you die, you prone in a hedgerow, AI in the open walking, you die

and how do you "lose" a flamethrower ?

other then that, doing good :)

my bad, somehow I click on the wrong game

but, do your troops ever throw a grenade that does kill/wound themselfs ? (my latest, guy blew up two of his own troops, and the last enemy, decided to give up, must of thought these guys are crazy !)

still dislike the idea of troops in ambush, for minutes or longer, then when you tell them to fire, they all got to seek cover, isn't that what they were suppost to be in, in the first place ?

Sure thing.

I'll have to get the exact answer about the MG units question. I think it has to do with how the AI assigns the weapon during battle as the situation changes (guys getting knocked unconcious or death) but I'm not 100% sure I've got it right. Especially in the case where your team doesn't incounter any health issues during the battle. Let me check for you.

Re: mobile tactics - Assuming I understand the question correctly, I've noticed the AI actually moving in troops ahead of tanks and using tanks to support infantry in a co-ordinated way. Not as regularly as it probably should be done but I have seen it. Is that what you meant?

Re: bridges - the pathing is worse on diagonal bridges as compared to ones parallel to the map edge. The way I understand it is that the only option is to redesign the maps so that bridges parallel to map edges can be drawn in. Sometimes very limiting in the design of the map if it's attempting to be historically accurate. What's strange is I've never had a problem with vehicle pathing across bridges in the entire time I've been working on the development team. Must have something to do with the way I issue vehicle move orders.

Re: soldiers going through doors - The trade-off for soldiers not going through buildings is seeing your troops get wasted in a street because the building you asked them to go through only had a door on the street side where down the road is a machine gun waiting for them. It also creates pathing issues to restrict them to doors and windows. You get stragglers not smart enough to remember the path everybody else just took in front of them.

Yes have grenaded my own guys by accident. Issued a move fast command on an enemy team and when my team gets within 10m I order them to target ground next to enemy, my team lob grenades then immediately issue move fast again so the attack doesn't stall. Some make it there before the grenades go off.

RE: troops on ambush - Does this happen with crewed weapons? Regardless I've not seen this happen very often unless they're being fired upon to begin with. Usually an ambush usually works pretty effectively in my experience. Also what kind of cover do you have them in to begin with? In case you're not aware of the option, the game options menu allows you to use the soldier outline to tell you what kind of cover they are in. I'd imagine that could have something to do with it if they're in really poor cover. If you can give specific examples we can try to recreate it to enhance or fix if need be.

Version 5 was always my favorite one as well. I never really got into CC2 as I never got into A bridge too far. I'll put my order in for this one as soon as the CDrom version is available from NWS.

Perhaps I can help, CC is based on ASL...and ASL focus is: you are in command of Squads, you are Infantry Squad Leader. In real life As a Squad Leader, sometimes you get vehicles as support from Higher HQ, these are temporary assets assigned to you for a given battle/mission but you do not actually directly own these assets. You can request their assistance in a given situation in a battle (or based on pre-arranged plan before the battle)...in real life the AFVs work on their own. If say for example an AFV runs out of ammo, or it's main gun is broken the AFV can decide to withdraw from battle on its own and there is nothing you can do about that. This is all based on WW2 history books that I red. Not sure about Mortar teams but I'm guessing it's the same principle. So from Close Combat game perspective if an AFV gets hit and crew bails out you have very limited control what you can do. No Infantry leader has jurisdiction over an AFV crew telling them when to bail out...

There's something that I don't understand why you bring a change. With CC5, strategic map wasn't squeezed like it is now. Whatever the resolution I used there was no map resizing.
Why such a change ?

I'm talking on the map aspect on the screen
With this screen shot from Longest Day if you remove the black border you see what I use to have with CC5.
I don't understand why the view has been reduced (squeezed).

I see now.  Sorry I misunderstood.  It's to preserve the quality of the graphics.  At any resolution above 1024x768 the UI looks blurry.  The tactical maps display at whatever resolution you have the game set to because they are larger graphics.

Weird. To me CC5 could be played up 1280 x 1024 and I have never have experienced change in quality. The screen resolution changes when you reach the tactical screen.
Or is that linked with a compatibility issue with scroll speed and directX ?

The game interface screens I think are done in 1024x768 (at least up to CC4), in the options menu you can choose the resolution of the battle map. if you don't want the game interface to stretch according to the desktop resolution. Go into you video card driver settings and select "Flat Panel Scaling" assuming you have nVidia if you have ATI there should be something similar. So you have a choice to either scale or not to scale. If you don't scale then you will get the CC5 interface screen centered when loaded and the rest will be filled with black border. I prefer to use this as I like the 1:1 resolution to pixel ratio. I hate stretching on LCDs...
