I'm slightly ashamed to say I'm a bit of a Trekkie. Was brought up with it in my youth. I don't dress up or anything. My dad loved the series and we always watched it as a family. He even made the Starship Enterprise out of cardboard and papiermache (spelling?). I don't know where he got them, some fan book or something, but he had the blueprints and made a scaled replica. It was very, very good and measurments were exectly to scale.

Anyway...the film...has it been released in the US yet? Anyone seen it?

I was stoked about a new Star Trek movie, but I have to say, after seeing the trailers, it looks like a couple of chavs thrown together on a spaceship...seems to me they would've been better being given and Escort RS Turbo and a hoodie!

Be interested to hear from anyone who has seen it

My wife is a massive Trekkie, she wants to see the movie. I wish I could have given you the info you wanted JD.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm an original airing Trekkie (my wife and I even went to the big Las Vegas Star Trek convention last summer ... our first in about 20 years, so it's not as bad as it sounds for me *grin*)... my grand daughter saw a trailer for the movie and exclaimed "you're going to hate it! This movie is for me!"

And as to your original question, it doesn't open locally until the 7th of May.

I've been a Sci-Fi fan since I was a very little kid....hence my avatar, Commando Cody. Not ashamed to say I've always liked Star Trek and am looking forward to this movie. Had some doubts about it when I first heard about it but the trailers and reviews seem to suggest that it's a pretty good movie. Apparently it's about a young James T. Kirk who has no direction in life and finds his way in Star Fleet...at least that's what I've heard. One of the few movies I might even go to a theater to see.

Big Trekker here too... have been for years.

I saw the a trailer on the web a couple of days ago and I have mixed feelings about it. It will definately NOT be of the same style of all the rest.... good or bad... who knows, but I'm a little worried that it will be all flash and no substance.

Will probably see it at the theatre though... can't not see a new Trek movie at the theatre....

I'll be seeing it. I'm a fan of all things Star Trek, hell I even liked the cartoon. I agree it's aimed at young people, which is a good thing. Maybe the movie will spawn a new series.

No, that's Heinlein (bugs & power suits). In Star Trek, they pretend they want to be friends before kicking ass (or more often, "tricking" ass) and then all become friends (or die).

If you want xenophile propaganda, read the thread about spam bots. Spam bots just want to be friends, but they're shunned by all at Matrix. Xenophobic company and customers!

JD,

It's coming out this week. I believe it starts Thursday night at some theaters, and all over come Friday.

I've been watching season 1 on Blu-ray this weekend and it is FANTASTIC.

I'm definitely planning on seeing this one. Might avoid opening weekend and go sometime during the week, though.

Doggie, you're confusing Star Trek fans w/Star Wars fans.

I'm a "Trekie" from the original NBC series who also watched the original Outer Limits before it got PC'd in Toronto.

BTW, there was an interesting article re all the (major) Star Trek series villians in my local Sunday magazine.

But hopefully this Trek pre-quel is better than those on-line fan films: special effects, some original series guest spots, but no acting!

That's just silly. My mommy had a Sears catalog! (and you should have seen the size of the one girl's lungs... I bet she could hold her breath a LONG time!)

Naw, those fans didn't rate a skit specifically about them on Saturday Night Live.

Hopefully (a remote possibility), the movie is more faithful to the original than the last series was. Everything that has slipped through my hands-on-ears-while-doing-the nah-nah-nah-recitation, has indicated otherwise.

And those free fan films are fun for the most part (but you still have to pay for acting). Okay, the one with 7 "seasons" was too painful to watch more than 2 "episodes."

I am a trekkie and looking forward to film. Hopefully it will be better than the last one. Can not remember if this is an even or odd numbered film, generally the even numbered films were the better films in the franchise.

Also after watching Babylon 5 and reading allot of David Weber I have come to be less fanatic about watching Star Trek. I have found that Star Trek portrayal of the overall human nature annoying.

My nostalgic TV memories are in the 60's. By the 1980's "stupid" became the latest entertainment fad. Westerns were out, miltary themed shows were out. Hippie cops who wanted to take it to the man were in. Dedicated left leaning doctors were in. Dirtbag lawyers were in. See LA Law. Stephen King was in, and everybody knew businessmen and government agents from "the shop" were the real villians. Soldiers were either neo nazis in league with corporate fascists if they were officers, or a bunch of dumb asses if they were stupid enough to join up as enlisted men.

Science Fiction went from classic Ray Bradbury to idealistic liberal scientists who struggled in vain to save mankind from the evil American military industrial complex.

Star Trek; the Next Generation brainwashed a whole generation. Liberals in space. We had only to reach out and understand the Klingons. The Borg were evil, but they were also victims. Every drone was once a peace loving "citizen of the Universe" until they were assimilated. But there are no homeless on Borg cubes. The drones are happy to serve the collective. The only real villians are the Ferengi, stupid capitalists with bad teeth, like rednecks.
On board Enterprise the best and the brightest are science officers. The lowly enlisted crewmen serve only the interests of the federation, and are happy to change the sheets after Klingon mating rituals for no pay.

Spies don't bother with commies or stinking savages from Arabia anymore. Jack Bauer started out working for a liberal black president, the only honest guy among a sea of crooked Republicans and and whack job Generals. He can torture people because he's a liberal, and liberals are always right. Everything they do is for the betterment of mankind. And in the end, it's always some American businessman who is behind the terrorist plot, the muslims are merely unknowing tools.

And to think there are some people who think Hollywood is full of communists. Why, that's just crazy talk.

I disagree. I think it was just plain blandness in space.

Almost every time I go to a store and they give me the total, I ask "You want MONEY for that? What, are you a capitalist?!?!" 75% of the time I get a blank stare. 15% of the time I get some sort of denial ("no, I'm not one of those.") Only 10% of the time do I get "you're darn right I am" or some sort of affirmative answer.

- I've been waiting for "No. I'm a Ferengi." (I think I'll die laughing if I ever get that answer!)

- I loved the one young lady who admitted she didn't know what that was. At least she was honest. Pathetic, but honest!

- The closest I came to an explanation was to ask a followup question the other day... "So, you're working here for free?"

I don't think I'll see it, nor the new Terminator film(which looks more Transformers than Terminator)..too much action(Flash/Bang) and not enough story/acting

Actually the only films I want to see are "UP" the cartoon and the Depp/Bale film about John Dillinger

The Ferengi finally got vindicated in the Deep Space 9 series w/Quark, otherwise I totally agree w/your synopsis; the only real actor on NG was Spinner, and Dorn's Klingon character was the most human of all the PC'd Star Fleet automotons on the bridge.

And if I had to hear "tackion particle" techspeak one more time ...

'Politics', not really, but I must confess having 'Star Trek' morals shoved down your throat every episode (from TNG on, anyway) did start to grind me down.

I'm looking forward to the movie, as I've actually enjoyed all of the movies, but as TV show Star Trek was made obsolete by first Babylon 5 and then the new BSG. I now find TNG and Voyager pretty much unwatchable.

Doggie,

That post definitely brought politics into a non-political thread. Can you discuss _anything_ without looking at it through a political lens? Cut it out and let the discussion continue on its original subject.

Regards,

- Erik

Why can't people enjoy a sci-fi movie without looking for hidden meanings, political statements, allegory, metaphors and other nonsense? It's meant to be entertainment for goodness sake. Switch your brain off, suspend disbelief and just enjoy for the sake of enjoyment.
