They officialy annouced that Duke Nukem forever has been shut down.
Read more here:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/164487/duke_nukem_fornever_3d_realms_shutting_down.html/

That's the longest made game ever.
I still wonder (and hoping) is it going to be released some day.

I never expected this to be made, so I`m not sure why this should even be an announcement as to such.

They say... Too Human was under development for 10 years, but at least it shipped.

Honestly, there's no way that Duke Nukem 3D can ever be topped, IMHO.

Actually...it's not ENTIRELY dead yet. I guess Take Two are the ones who actually fully own the rights to the Duke Nukem Forever IP.

I think it's good that they killed it off.

Duke Nukem 3D was a product of it's times. It's possible, that today, it wouldn't be so successful.

Oh well. I used to play Duke Nukem 3D back to the day, but don't enjoy shooter anymore for quite some time. Last ones were Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.

Part of the many options in PG3D Assault. Unfortunately this package was shipped without a beta-team to go over it, and this is why it`s not very memorable. AT units cause the game to insta-crash for example, and there were some other real doozies that even a single beta-tester would have caught the first time around. I don`t understand why some companies STILL send something to go-gold, without a tiny group of players to sample it.

I simply don`t get it....

But it`s a real shame because it really was great otherwise, and was just ever-so-close to becoming another classic master piece. What a way to screw-up the biggest name in the war-game franchise...

It definitely seems the last 12 months are so could be considered the BLACK-MONTHS of game developers. Nothing but brankrupties and layoffs, and right at a time when the American economy needed those jobs more than anything else.

Duke was ahead of it's time. It had features that no others had. And lets face it. If they wanted to release it today as a game faithful to it's roots. Which is a Arcade/action shooter. It wouldn't be as well recieved in my opinion. Tactical shooters are the rage these days. And even though Halo is a great game, the trendy "I hate Halo" banter on the web only solidifies this fact. The days of the Arcade style shooter are dead, because gamers want something more deep, and more realistic. And if Duke went that route, it probably would not be a faithful one. So this is for the best.

Rest in Peace DUKE, we'll miss you FOREVER!!!

Right... Ever heard about Duke game Manhattan Project? Probably not. Anyways I bought it, played it through, and I liked the feel of... modernized Duke Nukem II

My favorite part of Duke Nukem 3D was when I was in a bar and saw a TV playing the footage of all those police cars chasing OJ's white Bronco. So tongue and cheek....

I don't think it's dead yet. After all you gotta ask yourself why do we still remember Duke after so many years, the game was a masterpiece in its days, we *all* loved it. Then you got to ask yourself, what selfrespecting company wouldn't want to make a game with the name "Duke Nukem" in it. So they screwed it up bigtime... this time, but I just can't wait to see what other company will pick up the pieces, and make the Duke we've all been waiting for. And yes maybe they screw that one up too.... (anyone remember John Romero of "Doom" fame?). My point being, this time it ended up in utter failure, hopefully next time they will have more luck.
And I don't think there has been a game like Duke since Duke released, nor do I see one in the nearby future. Lots of shooter around, good ones too, but one with "adult" tongue in cheek humor? One with attitude?

Damn, can't believe I've been waiting for 10 years...  what a bummer.

I just spent a hour playing the Manhattan Projest demo and I love it. I like it much more than the FPS version.

I don't find the stripper humour as appealing as in primary school, though XD .

Anyway, I think he talks about the concept of Duke Nukem 3D action FPS being outdated when compared to modern FPS games.

On the other hand, it could be a successful platformer as there isn't much competition and the genre is old-school anyway.

Right: roots of Duke Nukem is with platforming. First two games were just that and there have been more since Duke Nukem 3D.

Too bad they didn't simply make more platformers instead of going after the pipe-dream of Duke Nukem Forever...
It's not like it would magically become more enjoyable just because it's FPS.

Also, a remake of Raptor would be nice.

With all the buzz the release of existing footage and the like has gotten, I suspect someone will pick up the rights to DNF.

Duke...WHO?.....Only Duke I know was the guy that made all them westerns.....LOL
Actually I did play a couple of them but I was not into FPS games all that much except for Heretic which could be played with a friend and we had a lot of fun with it. It was one of the first of its type.

seems like a lot of people are happy about this..but I don't really see it being a good thing for the industry or fellow gamers to have a big name like this be canceled then have a circus of litigation surrounding it; makes developers in the future play it safe and create games that aren't risky but produce profits and can be made in a short amount of time.

One wonders if Duke Nukem IS still a big name game series. How long has it been since he popped up in a title?

Except that Duke Nukem Forever was neither "risky" nor "unprofitable". It was just another FPS.
It's their fault that the development took so long and it's their fault that they changed engines so many times.

If they couldn't make a modern FPS before the engine they are working on gets obsolete, then they should have kept making platform games.

18 years ago, and title was Duke Nukem. 2nd game is Duke Nukem II, which came out in 1993, and Duke Nukem 3D was released in 1996.

Next games after DN3D were Duke Nukem 64 for Nintendo 64 in 1997 and Duke Nukem: Time to Kill for PlayStation in 1998. Former is just conversion of DN3D to N64 and later is new game that plays something like Tomb Raider (I've seen it in action but didn't play myself). Manhattan Project was released in 2002. There are many other games, and you can see them in Wikipedia
