Status: offline 		It's not that I don't understand Doggie's points (at least a few of them) but as others noted - it's fiction and it's entertainment. Just enjoy it and stick with the thread topic rather than trying to deconstruct it. I mean, we start with Star Trek and end up with communists and Jack Bauer?? Anyway, moving on...

A game for 12 year old kiddies.

People shouldn't ask themselves why schools get shoot up.
They should ask themselves why people who finish schools burned out due to mobbing aren't receiving high enough compensations to not seek vengeance.

Hey, who you calling 12?! I'm 41 in a couple of weeks!!!! Yes, I admit to having the box set of Warhammer 40k and have played a few times. It's great fun for a couple of hours. I got into painting the figures ages ago too, but with nobody to play it against regularly, it sort of fizzled out. Every time I visited a local Games Workshop store, I thought about popping in for one of their evening gaming sessions, but as 99% of the players seem to be 12, I decided I was far too old! Oh well. AD&D is the one I miss most. Sigh...

A film in the Warhammer universe with Star Trek production values would be a pretty good idea. Get someone like Spielberg or J.J. Abrams to direct and I'd go and see it. Then again, it would probably be one of the many films out there with amazing fx, but no plot or script worth talking about.

It aint about "politics"; it's about ideaology, and the motivation of the people who created the series. You may remember the episode of Star Trek,; the Next generation in which "Q' first appeared. In a the uniform of a U.S. Marine lieutenant colonel. Nothing political about that.

TNG was all about elitist ideaology. Every episode had self rightous moral tone to it. In the 23rd century, we've abolished capitalism. There's no money. Captain Jean Luc and the rest of officers work only for the betterment of mankind. With their enlightened attitudes, they were the 'best and the brightest". The less capable, the "unenlightened" slaved away in the deutronium mines, serviced the officers on pleasure planet Reisa, or changed the sheets in the inter-galactic emporium in San Francisco, the mecca of inter-dimensional diversity.

If you don't get that galactic socialism was the theme of Star Trek, then you don't get Star Trek. It's a parable of liberal idealogy. Star Trek is all about politics, and any attempt to pretend that it isn't is more elitist ideaology.

It's besides the point. This thread was not about the philosophy or ideology of Star Trek, it was just about the new Star Trek movie. By trying to turn it into a discussion of ideology and message, you're turning a non-political thread into a political one, which will end up getting locked. Cut it out.

What started as an interesting discussion about the new movie (which is fiction and entertainment to the rest of us!) has degenerated into something else entirely and has been spoiled and will be locked (quite rightly) before much longer. I don't really understand politics and don't really care about it as naive as that may be! Whether Star Trek is a parable or something very different is really not important to me. I saw and still see it as great TV and movies. Jean Luc Picard has always been a bit of a hero of mine and Scotty made me laugh as a kid. What does that say of me? Who gives a stuff! That they were great characters, is enough for me. It doesn't have to, and shouldn't be anything more than that.

If I want politics, I'll read the news or tune into the House of Commons broadcasts. I certainly don't visit this forum for anything political and agree with JD and Erik.

Status: offline 		Well, the age stuff is a  big problem for Wh40k, at least for novels. All new novels must be rated 12+, while they used to be 17+.
That's why William King left or rather was kicked out from Black Library. He didn't want to write novels for kiddies.

That's not saying much: TNG movies were nothing more than two-part TNG TV episodes, but you didn't have to wait 'til next week to watch the ending.

At least this latest movie banned Shatner from the set; that has to be a good omen.

Status: offline 		its encouraging that all the reviews so far have been very positive. Of course critics can be wrong. Wolverine has gotten very mixed reviews but has done well so far at the box office. I'm looking forward to seeing both after the crowds have died down somewhat. Not all the TNG movies were bad, anymore than the TOS ones. First Contact was good......i was amused at Picard's transformation into Kirk Mk II.

The "costume" that we of the 23rd century no longer wear, re Capt Picard, but the NG dress uniform actually looked like a dress.

The first season of this show was so unbearable that "Mad Magazine" spoofed it as "Star Trek: The Next Cancellation".

Crosby was fortunate when her character was quickly killed-off, only to come back as a blonde Romulan after the show got it's "sea legs".

Status: offline 		I'm always a bit dubious about using the box office as a guide to good or bad. I mean, alot of people will go and see Star Trek on release week...doesn't mean it's any good and yet it "done well at the box office". What would help to use it as a guage is seeing if the figures continue to stay high...but then again, people will probably go and see it even if a friend tells them it's rubbish because they want to see for themselves.

No...there's only really one critic, and that's yourself. I've missed too many films in cinemas because of bad critic reviews or friends telling me something was bad, only to rent it on DVD and wish I had gone to see it.

I fully agree with you. I went to see Watchmen based on reviews by movie critics, it turned out to be one of the worst films I ever saw!

Status: offline 		Just saw Wolverine. It wasn't as bad as the critics hinted but it did get a little slow in places. All and all though, we enjoyed it and GF unit got to see Hugh Jackman's bionic abs on the big screen. I see boFlex sessions in my future.

Didn't think I'd like it and ended up loving this movie. The cast choices were spot on,story made sense and there was no everything is all peachy happy ending. Go see the damn movie,then go back and see it after a few days.

Status: offline 		I just got home from seeing it and I thought it was really good. Definitely moves at a whole different speed than any previous Star Trek. I thought the new actors did a good job maintaining the characters with out trying to imitate the original actors. My wife, who fell asleep during Star Wars Phantom Menace (lucky her) even thought it was a good movie.
