It seem's to me that the Allies should be getting ULTRA info about Japanese fleet movements. No ULTRA....:(

After Midway, the Allies had a lot of problems getting good info because of changes to the Japanese codes. While these were eventually broken again, they played much less of a role overall during the period portrayed by UV. Signal traffic analysis and such was more important in that respect, but could also be misleading and often hindered as much as it helped due to the guesswork involved.

A design decision was made not to include these sources of intelligence due to their minor overall effect on this particular theater at this time. These will be implemented in War in the Pacific, which covers the entire time period and half the planet. :)

Regards,

- Erik

Hey Guys....War in the Pacific is a 70's board game of the same scale. A hex map from the west coast to India and Alaska to Australia, you have to play it on a ping-pong table and then I don't think it fits!!! Chits! The good ole days!

A little ULTRA would be cool, remember they got Yamamoto with an ULTRA message.

Hi, The old SPI War in the Pacific would never fit on a ping pong table. You needed a barn or a gymnasium to set it up. We had a room with all the furniture removed. Each side used another room for their production and TF/airgroup charts. 50-60 index card pers side each turn (each TF had an index card where the moves were recorded. airgroups et al also had there own index card.)
During one game that lasted 9 months real time there were 9 different allied players and 5 different Japanese players.
(I gathered up all the empty beer cans after 1 weekend and made 27 dollars at the recycle center 1979)

President Lincoln, when told that Ulysses Grant had an alleged problem with alcohol (as in he had no problem drinking it... :D), was reported to say,"Find out what he drinks, and send him a case. I can't spare this man, he fights."

You are absoultely correct, I left that part of the quote out. That'll teach me not to quote out of context.

"Find me the brand, and I'll send a barrel to each of my other Generals."

People dont realize that Grant did in fact lose in Virginia. 70,000 casualties from Wildnerness to Petersburg. Sherman only made one frontal assault in his entire career - Kennesaw Mt.

There wasn't any "Ultra" in the Pacific Theatre. The US had broken the Japanese Naval and Diplomatic codes, but that effort wasn't part of "Ultra". The "Ultra" project was specifically the European Theatre - Blechley Park.

VictorH,

Your technically correct, but now day's a WWII code breaking is ULTRA. I think they called it HYPO, CAST, FRUPAC or FRUMEL. Simpler to us ULTRA for all code breaking, we're lazy creatures.

zed,

Grant did not lose in Virginia, nor did he win! Lee lost the battle of attrition, Grant didn't. Grant did not fight a Napoleonic battle with Lee, all the other Union generals did and lost save one, Mead a Gettysburg. Grant saved the union by applying new tactics!

I'm currently reading Layton's book "And I was There". It's about US code breaking before Pearl Harbor and Midway. Very interesting as he puts a lot of blame for Pearl Harbor on USN in fighting and on Turner.
