Hi everybody,

as the latest patch of the best stategic WWII game is available for some time and some new and some old faces have appeared in the forums I thought it would be in the best traditions of MrQ's submissions to launch a new one-on-one PBEM tournament.

In recognition to WanderingHead's efforts , let's call it the GG 4.040 tourney. Guess which scenario will be played .

With experience from the previous attempts I suggest the following rules:

1. Each player will simultaniously play the Axis and the Allies in two games. Advanced supply, FOW on, the full Monty. Nothing new here.

2. Game pairings for the first rounds will be assigned to allow each player face a new opponent for as long as possible. Pairings will be announced here. Please do not start any games on your own

3. Only finished games count. Any aborted game (such as due to MIA) will not be counted regardless of game date or position.

4. To move to the next round, a player needs to achieve at least a draw result in any game. There is no bonus for 2 victories or any specific level of victory.

5. If a player looses one game and cannot continue the other due to his opponent's MIA status, he will be permitted to continue as the unfinished game would have allowed at least one player to proceed into the next round.

6. The tourney is designed to be played within a reasonble time. 1-on-1 games should not take more than 4 months. Any planned leaves should be announced to the board. I consider 4 weeks of non-activity as solid indication that "there is aproblem". If a game is stalled for more than 4 weeks without prior announcement, for the sake of the tourney's continuation games may be aborted by the admin (I volunteer...) if the next round would be significantly delayed and the players in question have not yet qualified. Thus being in the last game is no good position to be in

7. AARs are (still) highly appreciated and part of the experience!! Although scores will not be affected any player should at least post his last turn played. Remember that the tracking of the games will be through the board. Pics and a general explanation of course are the spice in the soup . Any feedback to the new features (designed and unwanted) are welcome, too.

8. The duration of the tourney is not limited, as only players without wins/draws or who are MIA fall out. Thus there may be repeated rounds with identical number of players. Finally, the winning player will be decided in a quare-off of the last two players. Only then the actual victory levels will be compared to declare a winner.

9. As time will fly by, there is hope (at least from my part) that WanderingHead will continue the evolution of the game and his GG mod. Thus at availability of a new patch we might switch to that version at some point.

10. In recognition of the World's financial crisis there will be no other prize for the winner than a big posted sign on this board. (just kidding for the first part)

11. The sign-in Period has just started and will be open until May 15 or shorter if this gets overrun . For Round 1 the pairings will be as sign-ins come in. I'd say that at least 4 people should sign up for a reason to start, with 8 or 10 being a reasonable maximum, so don't wait too long to sign up

To give all players a chance to get familiar with GG 4.040 and allow for simultanious start of all games please wait for the GO signal before you let loose the dogs of war

How to join: simply leave a message here, after you have seriously considered the long-term character of the tourney and the investment of time. Previous tourneys have shown that more players are MIA than actually are lost due to lost games...

Damn another tourney, very tempting indeed , I'll wait for a while to make up my mind, haven't played in a while... apart from an ongoing game in the 2vs2 tourny on round 3.

looking at the number of replies, you weren't kidding about 1 on 1

I'd be up for play, still into my 2nd and 3rd pbem games of 4.04 and enjoying the modifications alot. So much in fact it is hard to open up total war against the AI and have to revert back to playing without those neat changes... Dam You ! Wanderinghead. Dam you to hell.....

Arthur if you want the surrender rules to be in effect, games should be played without Automatic Victory.

& pity there isn't as many people as there used to be, it's a great game.
Arthur and me are now training for the tournament , if it ever takes off

Well it seems we are 3 by now, not one week into the sign-off period. Still plenty of opportunities to join

Well, actually I was not yet thinking about that, for the simple reason that I usually play with AV on.

I assume that games where AV conditions are reached should result in prolonged fighting until one side is destroyed instead. Probably it is not beneficial for the tourney to allow (almost) endless games. Quite hard to hold the next round if a game is going to 1949...Also the last matchup would not allow for simple determination of a winner without AV conditions?

Thus AV on.

I think the new 42 GG mod is also interessting to try. Especially the Axis have more advantage than in a 1939 situation, so we can see more axis winner.

Art, please add me to the list, as I am running out of game now.

A suggestion is if we can also try other scenarios like GG 42 or even Total war 43 ? These scenarios are much faster (so less MIA) and they can bring some fresh strategies due to the new situation.

welcome to the tourney. 7 days before start we have reached 7 players, that is much more than I had hoped for! So plenty of games on the horizon folks. If anybody feels like joining us hurry as on May 15th we shall kick this thing off.

I do agree that other scenarios are interesting. However, IMO the GG 4.040 modifications seem to be best experienced in the full campaign.

Also as the late-game scenarios skip the early-game planning I am afraid that it would just come down to a quick slug-fest-like game in which the first big battle or first major mistake decides a game. In the long game (full WWII) one mistake or unlucky outcome usually can be compensated.

I suggest we leave the short scenarios to the weeks where some players have already finished their games and are waiting for the next round to kick off

Hey there.  It's been close to a year since I've even thought about this game.  I used to love it but all the games I played as time went on became one of who could build the most artillery.  So there was little variety.
With that said, I’m willing to give this new scenario a try in the tournament.

One of my friend Armorhero is eager to join the tournament (he is a good player especially for axis). The problem is he is not accesible to this forum. So he asked me to put his email here. I'll transfer messages to him if he get his opponent.

I think it is a special internet for students with limited access but much cheaper. Luckly he can still receive email.

To BenTaylor, I think you have the right version.

no problem except a concern - how are we going to be updated on the games as Armorhero cannot post AARs or anything? If you xianing are willing to help him out that would be great...

P.S. greenlandj6 and Armorhero welcome to the tourney!

Maybe Armorhero's opponent can put some thing in AAR about his move ?  I am willing to help if his opponent don't want to do that.
