ASW attack at 60,44

Japanese Ships
DD Harukaze
DD Mikazuki
DD Satsuki
DD Yayoi

Allied Ships
SS Capelin, hits 2, on fire

Four DDs stumble over Capelin that was patrolling near Japan. Funny enough, out of 8 Type 91 DCs dropped, two achieve a hit. But two hits seem not to even heavily damage the sub...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 50,45

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 20
PC Shonon Maru #15
PC Kyo Maru #11
PC Kyo Maru #6

in return the sub takes a hit and six near misses...

13 x Pe-2 bombing at 10000 feet
3 x B-25J Mitchell bombing at 10000 feet

oh boy... well, thereīs this hr about not bombing oil / resources / HI of "friendly occupied territory" but Miller forgot about it. Iīve asked him if heīs not interested in this hr anymore and he told me it was a mistake and he offered me a redo of this turn. I didnīt want to redo it, lost some 100 oil points (600 daily oil production) and the site is now 66% damaged. Will spend 250.000 supplies to repair it. When I will be able to conquer Russiaīs resource sites mostly in good shape then I can afford it...

I wasnīt amused about this attack. Would this hr not be existing then I wouldnīt have conquered this base before all of Russia would have been lost anyway...

the Allied have been lucky in more than one thing here. Firstly, itīs a joke that if you have 180 undamaged fighters set to 60% Cap and only see f*cking 26 in the air. Secondly, my strike didnīt launch in the morning (for whatever reason, as it did in the afternoon) and the enemy caught our bombers on the ground...

have moved three units to the hex South of Borzya to make Miller nervous... those airattacks arenīt really having any effect... as it looks now, Miller seems to trying to defend Borzya. He has 13 units there and once again he seems not to be aware how easy it is to cut them off. We can cut them off and get as much supply North as we need as the railline just passed Borzya to the North...

Allied ground losses:
45 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 3
Runway hits 15

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 21000 feet

isnīt it nice if you have 271 medium bombers and you achieve 15 runway hits? And you still lose half a dozen bombers to flak... Stupid... there are only half a dozen Allied units at the base but who cares, one Allied flak gun is worth a DOZEN Japanese flak guns... itīs just a little bit off...

Donīt attack Allied bases with Japanese bombers in Nikmod...

I would be better off just doing fighter sweeps it seems. The Chinese Warhawks took a toll on one of my Tojo sentais as they got to bounce them. Then the Oscar IIs swept the floor with the Allied fighters...

at the end of the day the Russian nearly achieve a 1:1 in aircraft lost today...

an interesting screenshot, our top pilots. Posting this as the first pilot reached 15 kills today. Thatīs nothing compared to kills in stock but in Nikmod, having 15 kills is quite an achievement...

OMG, only 15 kills after 1.5 years in war?

against historiker, i got my first "tripple ace" after 2 months of combat.

do the aircrafts in nikmod have durasteel armor and deflector shields?

230 undamaged fighters, 90% Cap, 108 in the air... compared to the all time uber Cap ratio of the Allied on the whole map this is just yet another time when I think how ridicoulos it is when you need all your fighters on the map to defend 5 bases at best... would Russian morale have been better they could have made it easily through my defenses...

Japanese Ships
PC Mutsure, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PC Tsushima

Iīve been playing WITP via PBEM now for five years and I have yet to get used to that single subs are more a threat to six ship ASW TFs than the other way around. In WITP the IJN loses MORE escorts against the Allied subs than vice versa... can this be really right? The PC sunk of course... one of my new high ASW value PCs...

for Allied terms, Khomsomalsk has no flak defense at all... we go in low and while being on extended range we really hit the airfield hard today... If I were Miller I wouldnīt use my long range fighters for crappy Chinese fighter squadrons in Russia... When the Allied war machine getīs rolling again, he will need every dozen long range fighters he can get, also those P-40N IMO...

this is far North, West of Borzya. Our tank units and lots of divisions are driving directly on Borzya. While it looked like Miller would defend Borzya, he now moves his units out of the base onto the rail to either block me, or to retreat from my Army. At least one and a half dozen units are further East running North as fast as they can... it really looks like as if Miller would retreat at least half of his total units North, I donīt know if this is already an attempt to run for Irkutsk... suits me well, as soon as he has retreated to Irkutsk, as soon as I can take the rest of his territory and move most of my Army out again...

at some point you just have to be pissed off by this idiocy... 200 fighters set to 90% Cap, 60 in the air... of course I lose more aircraft on the ground than I take down, even if the attacker is made up by crappy Russian squadrons... itīs just a joke... 6 more months until we will get 30 Type 13 radar sets a month for our base forces... so hopefully after 4 months all of our base forces will have radar...

The Chinese seem to be fighting everywhere... Russia, Australia... Well, this really was Millerīs turn. The strike from Cooktown (extended range) smashes our base, there was never a recon flight but thatīs something you donīt need as the Allied. The most depressing fact is that we lose 10 high experienced Oscar II pilots and those two sentais are out of the war for the next 2 months... so much about "you only lose one or two pilots on the ground"... Thereīs a big base force with three dozen flak guns at Lae, fully supplied, not fatigued and not disrupted... does this mean anything? What a bullshit... But hey, of course the Allied bombers also donīt suffer from flying max range. Increasing their durability and making Japanese flak even worse than stock makes Allied bombers B-52 like...

An excellent day. The good news first: the Ki-61c Tony research was succesful and we will get the new fighter one month early at least. First fighters to leave the factories in 8/43 but as I am researching them quite heavily, I hope to get them in a month, means early 7/43. This month has seen the Hellcat going online...

USS Seal was succesfully engaged and sunk by IJN ASW forces near Nagasaki...

USS Seal (SS-183), 1938-1957

USS Seal, a 1450-ton Salmon class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned at the end of April 1938. After spending her first year's service primarily in the Caribbean and Panama areas, she was sent to the Pacific, where she operated in Hawaiian waters and off the West Coast. Seal voyaged to the Philippines in October and November 1941 and was there when the Pacific phase of World War II erupted in December.

Seal began her first war patrol from Manila in the middle of that month, sank a small freighter and ended the cruise at Soerabaja, Java, early in February 1942. She made a second patrol during that month and the next, as the Japanese completed their conquest of the Indies, attacked three convoys and inflicted damage on one enemy ship. During April-October 1942 Seal was based at Fremantle, Australia. During this time she made three war patrols, two off Indochina and one through the central Pacific en route to Pearl Harbor, that cost the Japanese war effort two freighters. In turn, the submarine's periscopes were damaged beyond use when she collided with an enemy ship in mid-November.

Following an overhaul, in April 1943 Seal returned to combat, sinking a tanker in early May during her sixth war patrol. Her next cruise had to be cut short after she was damaged in July by a prolonged depth charging. While off northern Japan at the end of August 1943, Seal again suffered damage when a hatch failed to close properly while she was diving. Though the submarine made her own repairs and remained on patrol, she made no "kills" in two attacks. Between November 1943 and March 1944 she operated in the central Pacific during the invasions of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, performing lifeguard and reconnaissance duties. At the end of her tenth patrol Seal entered the Mare Island Navy Yard for an overhaul that included replacement of her original, and very unreliable, H.O.R. diesel engines.

When this work was completed in the summer of 1944, Seal was sent to the northern Pacific, where she made several attacks and sank two Japanese ships. Her final combat cruise, during the fall, took her back off northern Japan, yielding another sunken Maru, her seventh. After returning to Pearl Harbor late in November 1944, Seal was assigned to training service, initially in the Hawaiian area and, after June 1945, at New London, Connecticut. Decommissioned in mid-November 1945, three months after Japan had given up the fight, she was placed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In June 1947 Seal was taken out of "mothballs" and put back to work as a stationary training submarine for the Naval Reserve. This assignment, initially at Boston, Massachusetts, and later at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, lasted until she was taken out of service and stricken from the list of Naval vessels in May 1956. Seal was sold for scrapping a year later.

As expected, it was a surprising turn... for both of us...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/08/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Truk at 63,78

Japanese Ships
DD Oite
DD Hayate
DD Hatakaze
DD Asakaze
DD Kamikaze
DD Sazanami

Allied Ships
SS S-39, hits 2

spotted this sub heading directly to Truk last turn so Iīve created 3x6 DD ASW TFs. And not surprising, one of our TFs is immediately acting as target for the sub... MK10 torps missed... two near misses in return...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and hereīs what really surprised me:

Coastal Guns at Panaji, 17,14, firing at TF 1030
TF 1030 troops unloading over beach at Panaji, 17,14

371 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
DD Stronghold, Shell hits 1
DD Isis

Allied ground losses:
138 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

what the heck are you doing Paul?? Spotted two small TFs moving South from Karachi. They were pretty close to the coast and Iīve thought that itīs quite bold to mave them moving within possible range of my bombers (which there are no in India... ). I was quite sure that the two TFs would move towards Perth but this turn showed that this is a mini invasion! Lol, we spotted a regiment of an Indian division being landed right into level 9 forts and a full IJA division... I wonder if Miller thinks I would not defend my positions in India... this is Millerīs Dieppe... If I would be him, I would immediately load up the regiment again and move it back to Karachi...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coastal Guns at Panaji, 17,14, firing at TF 1030
TF 1030 troops unloading over beach at Panaji, 17,14

342 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
DD Rocket
DD Stronghold
CA Suffolk

Allied ground losses:
187 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Truk at 63,78

Japanese Ships
DD Akebono
DD Amagiri
DD Sagiri
DD Asagiri
DD Hatsushima
DD Kawakaze

Allied Ships
SS S-39

another try, another time nothing achieved...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Truk at 63,78

Japanese Ships
AK Hukko Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Tama Maru #5
MSW Kyo Maru #3
MSW Kyo Maru #1
MSW Kongo Maru #2
MSW Hinode Maru #20
MSW Hakata Maru #7

Allied Ships
SS S-39, hits 1

and while three DD ASW TFs are not enough to defend us against the spotted sub, it then even torps an incoming, ESCORTED supply convoy... The AK will make it and was disbanded into Trukīs level 9 port...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
J1N1-S Irving x 27
A6M3a Zero x 116
G4M1 Betty x 90
Ki-45 KAIb Nick x 35

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
20 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 78
Port hits 1
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-45 KAIb Nick bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and here comes Millerīs surprise:

Day Air attack on Luganville , at 72,107

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 130

Allied aircraft
SBD Dauntless x 36
TBF Avenger x 16
PBY Catalina x 5

P-39D Airacobra x 64

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 9 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
SBD Dauntless: 26 destroyed
TBF Avenger: 8 destroyed
Beaufighter VIF: 11 destroyed
Beaufighter VIC: 8 destroyed
P-36A Mohawk: 14 destroyed, 19 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 14 destroyed, 35 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
7 casualties reported

Runway hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Beaufighter VIF bombing at 2000 feet

found something to do for KB... after the fight around Northern Australia was over we moved KB (and most of the IJN) back to Japan for repairs and upgrades, while the carrier based aircraft were sent to the Philipines to train their reinforced daitais. KB arrived back at Truk and Iīve thought it could be a good idea to interrupt the Allied training runs on Luganville. KB moved in full speed and unspotted then set most of the fighters to LRCAP our base from 4 hexes range. I was amazed to see more than 100 fighters on LRCAP over the base and they really took a toll on the attacker. Some easy kills for KBīs fighters and only three Zeros were lost (two pilots killed). This of course means nothing for the Allied training programme, as we killed only second line aircraft and it surely wonīt stop Miller from doing those training runs. But it was nevertheless nice to see...

While the Allied bombers flew day after day against Luganville, today nothing came in... a pity...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Borzya , at 64,20

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 84
Ki-49 Helen x 157
Ki-46-II Dinah x 4

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 5 destroyed, 9 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 2 destroyed, 27 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 6 destroyed, 7 damaged
MiG-3: 18 destroyed, 13 damaged
SB-2: 2 destroyed
Pe-2: 1 destroyed
IL-2 Shturmovik: 1 destroyed
R-12: 2 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
7 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 39

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet

a crappy hit rate and the destroyed ac on the ground werenīt worth the Helen losses... The Warhawks accounted for all kills within our strike... quite amazing for me because the Chinese pilots shouldnīt be better than the Russian ones and the Russian fighters all have better stats for A2A except the gun value which is three times as high when you look at the Warhawkīs six pack...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 66th Rifle Division, at 63,19

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 3
Ki-49 Helen x 21

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49 Helen: 2 damaged

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ki-49 Helen x 31

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49 Helen: 10 damaged

Allied ground losses:
18 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 313th Rifle Division, at 63,19

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 19
Ki-49 Helen x 53

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49 Helen: 11 damaged

Allied ground losses:
49 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

air to ground strikes from Tsitsihar on the enemy ground troops North of Borzya. Miller decided to defend here and IMO that was not his best decision. Those three air attacks are really important, as theyīve disrupted three Russian divisions out of six holding position here (with several support and arty units).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 63,19

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 394921 troops, 3875 guns, 3427 vehicles, Assault Value = 9426

Defending force 90759 troops, 1088 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 2057

Allied max defense: 1920 - adjusted defense: 1029

Japanese assault odds: 15 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
3816 casualties reported
Guns lost 88
Vehicles lost 87

Allied ground losses:
7459 casualties reported
Guns lost 313
Vehicles lost 9

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

then our Army attacks... lead by our tank units we see the biggest troop stack of the war attacking the helpless defender in open terrain. The enemy had no chance and we inflicted heavy losses within the defender. Millerīs biggest problem now is that those troops had to retreat to Borzya where they will be cut off in no time now... At least a dozen units is moving North on the rail just a couple of hexes East of this position. More than two dozen units are holding their positions in the bases between Vladivostok and Borzya.

While I know that the "run North strategy" is something a lot of Allied players prefer (as a couple of people pointed out in this AAR), itīs quite hard to do that if a) China is knocked out and the Japanese have total superiority in ground troops and b) if the Japanese player is aware of the possibility of the "run North strategy" and he can see the enemy moving because of intense recon efforts by at least a dozen DinahII and III chutais.

As soon as I spotted dozens of Russian units moving North, I redirected the main thrust (that was located South for the drive on Vladivostok) to my positions in the North to now cut the enemy territory in two. I canīt see what can stop me from doing this now. Vladivostok was taken without a fight and my tank Army that is backed up by one and a half dozen inf divisions wonīt have a real problem to achieve itīs goals in the North now.

This forced retreat cost the Allied a hundred points for ground losses today.

RED ALERT!

we have spotted three TFs moving towards Port Moresby... as they are three hexes off the base this canīt be a bombardment or surface combat TF and following my nav search reports, this is an INVASION heading to Port Moresby. I canīt believe that Miller is really pulling that one off. We havenīt spotted a single carrier (how many operational carriers does he even has?) and he attacks a base that can be attacked from several of my bases. Lae and Goodenough Island were knocked out by the 4E nuclear bombers but there are several other bases we can launch Betty strikes on the incoming invasion. We have also KB nearby (Truk) and have set it to move full speed towards Buna to strike from the Eastern side of PM against the attacker.

I canīt believe heīs really doing this... I have no clue how this will really turn out but the chances to see a massacre on his ships are pretty high... that my nav search once again failed to alert me earlier is a pain, otherwise KB would be in strike range tomorrow already to launch against the fully loaden transports...

nice counterfire by my two small IJN base forces. Once again I think itīs the joke of the year that I lose two dozen DDs around Northern Australia to mines while going in with surface combat or bombardment TFs and once again the Allied seem to be immune to my mines. At the end of the turn there were still 3900!!!!! mines at Port Moresby but all we get is one f*cking hit on a DD... this just sucks... looking at the casualties, there must be coming a lot of troops ashore, PM will be Allied soon I guess...

I have to say that I was really disappointed by the performance of my IJN torpedo bombers today. Not much hit for all those bombers that launched. In total we got perhaps 40% of the bombers into the air, regardless of being fully supplied and in range of air HQs. Nav strikes are a hard task...

Luck wasnīt on our side today as Buna was clouded in, my bombers staid on the ground while Allied bombers came in to bomb and destroy them. And one thing made Miller really lucky today: KB ended up ONE hex too far away to launch a strike. One hex closer and KB could have launched 250 bombers twice this day against a fully loaden invasion TF... a pity...

This is what the enemy throws at Port Moresby. IIRC then those US divisions are the ones that were forced to retreat South of Darwin, so they are all understrenght, only the Australian division should be at full strenght. But it doesnīt matter, the defense of PM is far to weak to oppose the attack. Not even our forts are built up, only at 1. I planned to slightly reinforce PM within the next weeks and build up the forts but never intended to really defend it with force. At least not that much force that I would keep Miller from attacking as I do want to see him to constantly do offensives like this one here. As long as the enemy doesnīt have enough carriers to support his invasions, all of them will be bloody. And I can asure you, the Allied Navies will suffer again...

we did not have the luck to see KB moving one hex further yesterday but today we were in perfect strike range (3 hexes) and launched a full strike in the morning... the enemy TF is hit hard, nearly two dozen ships should be sunk, including two CLAA and one CL... at this point it becomes more and more strange to me to see this attack going in. Pretty much reminds me of Millerīs attack on Timor when his carriers turned around and I slaughtered his APs. He told me afterwards he would never do that again. Well, it seems heīs doing the same thing big style again now...

While we launched 258 bombers in the morning (with only half a dozen being damaged), we "only" launch 186 in the afternoon and at least half of them tries to attack already sunk ships (mainly targetting the two CLAAs and the CL), making this strike only half effective... nav search reports at least 80 ships in this TF... but more ships are about to sink... we donīt hit a lot of troop loaden APs it seems or most of the enemy troops have already unloaded...

same here... if you really know the weaknesses in the code of this game than you can really exploit it and Iīm not saying that this is an exploit of Miller. Not at all. But if you have a huge TF with only a couple of "high value" ships in it then those surely get sunk but it will also result in a high percentage of enemy bombers not attacking the rest of the TF because they try to attack a sunk ship instead of attacking a fat AP just sitting 50 yards away in a TF of 100 ships... I guess if this "feature" wouldnīt exist, some 150 more bombers would have attacked ships today instead of trying to engage a sunken one...

guess at this point we have decimated the enemy TF by something like three dozen ships sunk and some more being damaged, so this shouldnīt be the time to complain. Our losses in aircraft are more than light and if I would be the Allied, I wouldnīt cheer about those losses. But Miller must have expected them as he already told me he expects to lose a lot of ships when KB would show up. I would never do an attack like this. He did only one day of bombings with his heavy bombers against my bases and none of those bases that were hit launched a strike anyway (and this not because of the Allied attacks). It really remembers me of the Allied drive on Timor, the only difference is the fact that Miller now has Corsairs... I donīt have Tonies yet but hopefully soon, knowing that they are not as good as the Corsair of course, but surely a milestone compared to the "fly straight ahead Tojo".

We have still nearly a dozen Allied divisions bottled up at Wyndham and I have still not given up the intention to kill them off. And this is what should concern Miller. Losing those 3000 assault points at Wyndham will be a major disaster for the Western Allied as they donīt have that many divs at the moment and it will free up 10.000!! of Japanese assault points in this region. So in fact, I donīt understand this attack on Port Moresby at all at this stage. It looks dangerous for us at the moment (not nearly as dangerous as the attack on Timor though) but we have the chance to do the same thing like at Timor, cut them off and make the Allied pay.

For me, this operation is a good example of "too early, too far again"...

I was in the process or regrouping my ground troops in this area and therefore I donīt have a couple of nav guard units or a bgd on hand to be flown in with Tabbies from Rabaul. This and the fact that PMīs forts werenīt built up makes the Allied invasion possible. I wonīt call it a success because taking the base but losing over 50 ships doing this (if we launch strikes tomorrow) isnīt a success IMO. Itīs a success for us as our goals always have been to sink ships. Doing this with low losses to our own forces if possible. The only thing that hurts the Allied at some point are losing ships. And while they get a hell a lot of ships, Iīve made the experience that they do feel it when they lose too many of them. Those dozens of ships being lost in this invasion wonīt hurt in the long run but itīs only this one invasion. The same already happened at Timor when we sunk two dozen APs. Now we probably get another four dozen. Sure you can use AKs to ferry around your troops but you will soon find out that you need A LOT of AKs to ferry troops and donīt forget that Nikmod has greatly reduced cargo capacity of all ships. The step from a bad outcome to a disaster when it comes down to ship losses around PM is dependend only on two things: a) how many more days will the Allied TF hang around and b) will the weather prevent any of KBīs strikes. Thereīs also the possibility of an Allied 4E bomber strike on KB but Iīll take that risk. Should have a 200 Zero Cap and hopefully the 4Es wonīt show up in the hundreds and their morale should hopefully be low. And not to forget the fact that he has to even spot KB with search aircraft from his bases around Cairns, which is something like a dozen hexes away...

That would be a nice rate of bombers available/launching. Miller told me that just before the invasion went in that he "only" expects my Betties to show up and KB joining later (one day later...). And I told him that my Betties alone nearly were enough to defeat his carriers off Darwin but as it turns out now, they canīt do much it seems. Without KB it would have been quite nice days for the Allied.

ground attacks at extended range... must mean the enemy ground troops will attack today... I would have set all my 4E bombers on nav attack to engage KB though... with over 300 long range bombers that canīt be shot down by Cap or flak I would have kept them on nav attack to get a chance to hit the fragile Japanese carriers. Miller stated in his email that thereīs a huge discrepancy in Allied and Japanese losses in warships due to the fact that the Allied donīt have long range torpedo bombers like the Japanese Betty and Nell and therefor those losses are so onesided because as long as I stay further than 5 hexes away from his bases nothing could harm KB. Well, Iīm of total different oppinion on that case. Speaking from my experience as an Allied player (and from Japanese experience too of course), the Allied 4E (and to a high extend the Ventura in Nikmod too) are perfect ship killers and I usually achieve BETTER results with B-24 than with Betties against everything except BBs as I have yet to see a 4E dropping a bomb that can penetrate the deck armor of Japanese BBs.

Same goes for his Mitchells and Wellingtons, if you have ships in their range then they are in high danger. Of course much depends on the crews experience but the same goes for the Betty crews. Low experience, few hits, high experience, many hits. And high experience also means BIG bombs and big Allied bombs are far more dangerous to Japanese ships than Japanese torpedoes are to Allied ships. Speaking with an experience of thousands of PBEM turns in stock, Nikmod and BigB I can surely say that the Allied equipment of mid 42 on is surely no reason not to sink Japanese ships. The equipment works just fine and you will get more and more and more of that fine equipment. You donīt need no stinking long range torpedo bomber (that canīt be used for anything else) as the Allied, you have heavy bombers that drop 4.000 lb of laser guided bombs as soon as they have decent experience...

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

there was no doubt that the defenders would have had a chance. The US divisions looked pretty worn out, only the Australian division seems to still be in a good shape. 1061 assault points with 5 Allied divisions and support troops isnīt that much anyway...

well, Port Moresby is Allied again. So what about the situation now? The enemy has landed five divs, some art units, an AA unit and an Australian construction unit and NO base forces. Was that an oversight? How can you do that invasion without bringing base forces immediately? The airfield is level 3 and it will take some time to further build it up. To further build it up he will need seabees (if he wants to do it fast) and he will need supply. Supply is one major question again and when looking at what weīve hit from day one of the invasion on and how many AKs there were in total and how many were lost, I seriously doubt that Miller has more than 20.000 supplies on the beach. And 20.000 supplies isnīt that much. Enough to go on for some time, but not enough to do serious base building, supplying your troops and mount a bomber offensive out of the place. Which means that Miller has to do two things: a) bring in more supplies (can only be done by ship - say hello to Ms. Betty ) and b) move in more troops (could also be done by airtransport).

Of course he now has made a first step into a region where he can use his Corsairs and medium bombers to hurt me. But to seriously hurt me he probably has to build this place up to max size and I have to let him hurt me, which means staying within Corsair range. Itīs a comparable situation like it was on Timor (just not as dangerous in a strategic view), the enemy came in unexpected and just a couple of weeks too early, he took the place and he now holds position at a place that is surrounded by numerous Japanese bases that have been built up. Those bases can "only" be reached by heavy bombers from Australia or bombers out of PM itself but I guess PM has to concentrate to protect itself rather than launch an offensive. And to exploit the situation, the enemy just has to send task forces to the base, just like it had to be done on Timor. My reaction on Timor lead to my offensive against Northern Australia that was a more or less complete success (except the destruction of all the Allied divisions at Wyndham - but Iīm still working on that one). My reaction against Port Moresby canīt be that I invade the area around Townsville because I canīt go in against 600 Allied bombers with my Cap of 200 KB Zeros and I donīt have the shipping and ground units anyway. Not that I would do that if I would have the ships and the ground troops...

But one thing I can asure you, I already have a plan... stay tuned...

I canīt believe it! CA Suffolk is still afloat? WTH? DinahIIIs were flying daily recon to Ceylon and they came back with the info that there are nearly a dozen ships disbanded at Colombo (level 6 port), including at least one CL (which obviously is Danae that also was spotted during our Betty attacks on CA Suffolk). So Iīve moved in three Helen sentais and ordered them to attack with a Zero Daitai as escort. I have to say that Iīm totally disappointed by the escort as the enemy Cap immediately attacked the bombers, downing 6 of them easily as the Beaufighter has an awful armament...

I know of the base force at Colombo that is bristling with AA guns, nevertheless Iīve ordered the attack to go in at 11.000 ft as you donīt hit anything if you go in higher and still suffer from the Allied uber flak that wrecks your bomber force in no time. Needless to say that I was totally shocked when I saw the first 250kg AP bomb going through Suffolks deck armor as I was 99,9% sure it would have sunk after taking FIVE torps from my Betties. Looks like there was a lot of FOW involved in this attack. Even four torps should have sunk the CA for sure. Superior Allied damage control and the fact that the ship was disbanded into the level 6 port obviously also helped a lot. Donīt know how Suffolks damage looks like now, after taking nearly a dozen bombs. One or two bombs werenīt able to penetrate the belt armor. Also CL Danae is hit hard, again a couple of belt hits that didnīt penetrate, but also here 7 or 8 250kg AP bombs should do a hell a lot of damage to the CL. Hopefully CL Suffolk is sunk now...

15 Helens lost, including a dozen high experienced crews, but I think the damage done was worth it... if we attack again, then not without another daitai of Zeros as escorts...

god damn! I was thinking about ordering this attack for more than just a minute but as the enemy has not landed ANY air support squads Iīve thought he also wouldnīt fly in aircraft as this is something I wouldnīt do... well, Miller did and I wonīt blame him for doing this. So ordering this attack was a mistake as we lose two dozen KB aircraft and their precious, high experienced pilots. The high experienced Zeros (the best I can field) hardly traded one of their own for one of the enemy fighters and this showed me that medium experienced Allied pilots in Corsairs and Lightnings are too much of a threat already to take them on if not absolutely necessary. And this airfield attack surely was no MUST at all as I canīt close the airfield forever anyway. All in all Iīm absolutely satisfied with the damage done to the enemy invasion of Port Moresby, even with the two dozen aircraft lost today, we only lost three dozen in total for sinking something like 70 ships, including two British CLAA, a US CL and several DDs. Especially the AP losses will be something Miller will feel the next months I guess...

bit airfield strike from Rabaul. As this is the follow on strike to KBīs strike, as usual the Cap has no chance at all. While the 90 exp Zero escorts from KB can hardly hold their own, achieving a 1:1 kill rate, the 80 exp Zero escorts (that are coming in from 10 hexes range and are fatigued from previous attacks) take down the enemy fighters in a 10:1 kill rate...

but what the hell should I think about this hit rate of 200 Betties. Thatīs exactly why I will never understand Allied players that think the Betty is so uber. Yes you can use it to sink all kind of ships (if you donīt run into Cap or heavy flak). But is there anything else you can use it? Yes, port attacks if there are ships to hit... but thatīs it... 200+ high experienced IJNAF bombers achieve 28 hits on the runway. 200 4E bombers would achieve 250 runway hits. Funny thing is, those 4Es carry "only" 3 times as many bombs on that range as the Betties do but achieve nearly 8-10 times more hits on average.
