Scenario 17
My game is going well against the Japs and I have a size 5 airbase on Lunga. Medium bombers from Lunga and B-17s from Lae are pounding the Shortland Islands.

As things were going well I thought I would take a risk and send my carriers into harms way. Three task forces which included the Lexington, Yorktown, Saratoga, Enterprise and Hornet plus some destoyers and cruisers moved south of New Georgia, although still within fighter cover of Lunga, and launched some air strikes against the SI.

No interference from LBA so I moved to within 4 hexes of the SI, outside my own LBA and carried out another day of raids. Still no enemy LBA

This is going well I thought, so I detached six cruisers and six destroyers and sent them to bombard the SI. An excellent turn followed in which the surface force massacred a Jap convoy, then bombarded the base and sank several ships in the port. B-17s arrived to add to the fun and then my carriers sent a hundred and sixty strike aircraft against the airbase and port.

Unexpectedly, my bombardment force ran away, even though I had set do not retire which left my carriers and about twenty destroyers 4 hexes from SI.

Although I was tempted to stick around for one more turn I thought I had better not push my luck so I ordered the carriers to retreat closer to Lunga and back under cover of LBA.

Under the cover of darkness, a Jap sub sneaks in and torpedoes the Lexington - Grrr! Several expletives later, I am wishing I had stayed where I was instead of pulling back

Then dawn breaks to find a Jap surface force including two battleships in the hex where my carriers were the previous day. Phew!!

Perhaps a torpedo wasn't so bad after all :)

About forty devastators went after the battleships and didn't get a single hit though. Maybe I'll get them tomorrow :)

Well done! Are you also one of these people who intuitively know when to attack and when to leave?

With this game, I find myself relying more on intuition than reasoned judgement, as doing so has always allowed me to push my luck just enough, then get away from tight spots unscathed. :)
