For those who are far better at ship recognition than I am, what are the ships that they show (or tried to show) that are bombarding the beach?? It happens around the middle of the movie with the German soldier riding towards the beach and a Greman office in a fortified bunker on the phone to rear HQ.

Thanks!

Can't say I remember any ships being clearly shown, but haven't seen the film for many years. However...

Assuming the beach was Omaha, the principal units in Bombarding Force C (attached to Force O assigned to Omaha) were BB's Texas and Arkansas plus CL's Glasgow (RN Southampton Class), and Georges Leygues and Montcalm (French La Galissonnière Class).

HTH.

To me it looked like they used Clevelands, a Baltimore and a Brit CL..

I watched it today and what they showed were big guns in triple turrets. Pretty good movie for Hollywood.

One thing puzzled me. The movie plot has the 29th calling in the Rangers from Pont du Hoc to help their inland breakout. I thought the Rangers actually moved inland to find the missing guns.

I have a game on Normandy which I haven't played since some other game took my heart away.
But I remember 1/2 the Rangers coming ashore on the extreme right flank of the 29th Division.

At the "Point du Hoc",the rangers attacked the fortified position of a coast battery.
The gun were previously removed to the inland by the german (in fear of bombardment).
but the fortified position had a garnison who defended their position.

Right, but I thought the Rangers moved inland to try to find the guns rather than moving laterally to help the 29th breakout. But perhaps it is explained by only part of the Rangers landing at Pont du Hoc. It's been too long since I studied it in detail.

I had thought that a detachment of Rangers landed with the 29th.

Yup, Some rangers landed at pointe du hoc, then moved inland to find those guns. Others landed on the extreme right of omaha beach (looking from north)

When they didn't find the guns, they moved inland.  If you ever get a chance, go check out Point du Hoc.  Truly amazing they even tried it.  Even more amazing that they actually did it.

I have visited Point du Hoc several times, and it is a very nice location and experience.
Pretty ambitious and impressive plans they had about it back in WW2.
