Papua

We sent an A6M3 sweep into Milne Bay losing 5 of ours for 7 Kittyhawk Ia. We also sent 2xDD in on surface sweeps and sank 1xAK unloading at Milne Bay.

Planning
This turn we will move the fleet to a point 2 hexes NE of Milne Bay and we will send in the Amphibs together with surface, bombardment, asw and minesweeping detachments. Cover CAP will be provided by Rufes from Shortlands and Zeros from Zuiho. Another Sweep of A6M2 will go in to Milne Bay. We expect a big carrier battle this turn. Well we expect a big battle in general - he must know we are comming so he should throw everything he has at us.

Here is pic of the sweep over Milne Bay.

Milne Bay

Well lots of action here this turn. I don't usually dump the combat reports into the AAR, but I will this time.

Bottomline, it looks like the American carriers were too far South to be able to intervene, so we seem to have gotten a bit of surprise on our side. Our troops are not completely unloaded - still need probably a day - so we will not attack on the ground this turn. To avoid our sweeps and optimize attacks on our ships, Nik switched all his fighters over to escort. So this turn we will send one Betty unit in to bomb the Australian ground units. Right now, it looks like we are facing two Brigades - so the probability that we can shift them out is very low - but we are here - so we will try - not this turn - but next turn.

Certainly the American carriers should show up this turn.

Here are some pics of the attacks.

The B-26s actually got to make a run on the Shokaku - our cameraman missed that shot - but here is the next attack against the supporting BB.

Does the report below mean that the PB's aren't causing any damage to the "enemy troops" that they are firing at, or is there something going on "under the hood" that we can't see? I would like to think the PB's would cause some kind of trouble...

Other than variation for FoW the above would indicate the PB missed in this case. The small boats can can damage - but not everything - here is a case where they do:

Whoops - wrong game - in WITP/AE - in Joe-Speak - a CX is just short hand for either a CA or a CL.

13-14 October 1942

Milne Bay

Day One - Mostly B-17 strikes against the landing hex - the B-17s do finally manage to hit one of our AK. Our Betty's go in and do nada. Our troops finish uploading but the vast bulk of the 1000s of supply points they brought along have already been consumed - so even though we will attack this turn - our fighting capability will be significantly impaired.

Oh, on day two the American carriers launched a long range - unescorted attack against the landing hex. Our carriers did not react - despite being on "react=6". The Takao and 2xDD were heavily hit and may not survive.

Planning
We will go ahead and attack - I doubt things will get much better. We will send in fast transports from Rabaul and Mavis flying boats with a few merger supply points.
Our carriers will "zoom" South in the hopes of forcing a carrier battle - but we suspect that Nik will bug out at maximum speed to the South - and avoid a confrontation.

Here is a pic of our Betty's going in and bombing Milne Bay but getting zero hits.

Milne Bay

Lots of little combats in the air and at sea - no big carrier battle - Nik did run to the South. Our ground attack at Milne Bay failed miserably - we will begin the evacuation immediately.

Allied cruisers and destroyers came into Milne Bay and beat up on our cruisers and destroyers - getting surprise in each of three battles against our surface TFs. Our ASW, Minesweeping and Fast Transport TFs faired even worse. We lost six various ships - 3 DD, 1 Escort, 1 PB and 1 AK.

Our Southern sweep with the carriers did manage to catch the Allied Cruisers and Destoryers at sea the next morning. According to the FoW we sank 11xDD and 1xCL however by our count we only got 6xDD.

So far ship losses for the operations are about even. Of course our ground losses are much heavier - and the Allied air losses are much heavier. The Allies lost about 200 planes during the last week according to the FoW - we lost about 30 - mostly due to attrition. The Allied losses were mostly causes by sending planes against the CAP of the fleet - which though it was not "uber cap" like in stock - it was sufficient to shot down a lot of planes especially P-39s. The Allied strike did get through to the ships a fair amount but did not get many hits. The B-17s did most - if not all of the damage.

Planning
Well we will pull the fleet back to Truk. It will probably take 2 weeks to get them back and refueled - and not sure really how long it will take to fuel the whole fleet. There is 20K fuel at Truk right now with about 30K aboard the oilers - though we will not touch that.

Given the 60 odd carrier bombers the USN lost 3 days ago - this opens the only weakness in the Allied defense. So this means our only chance is to launch a major attack against Lunga and try to take back the base. I doubt it is possible - but the victory conditions essentially imply that these are my orders - and if I will not obey them then I owe it to the military profession to ask to be relieved in which case I would be replaced by the next guy who would try. So let's say I am that next guy. Then now it is my job to try my best to take Lunga. The remaining ground forces to begin planning for Lunga and we will start trying to increase supply deliveries even though this will both increase our losses and tip our hand. But we can do nothing on Guadalcanal without major amount of supply - that is the pre-requisite.

Here is the combat report dump.

What is a CX? Cruiser?

Oh that is an X (ex)perimental Star Cruiser - of course!!!

Whoops - wrong game - in WITP/AE - in Joe-Speak - a CX is just short hand for either a CA or a CL.

So there´s no CL or CA anymore? I´m not that much of an expert to know every single CA/CL that was in the theatre and I guess from mid 43 on I could have trouble to know if I am attacked by a CA or CL, which makes quite a difference...

No, there are still CAs and CLs in the game, CX is just Joe's shorthand so he can group them for his AAR.

In AE ships from different TF can be attacked by aircraft from the same attack. Tatsuta and Tenryu were in a different (Surface) TF than Takao and Haguro (bombardment).

17-18 October 1942

Results

Today's action was the "wind down" phase - as our fleet withdraws to Truk. Otherwise, we performed some evactuation activities to pull out the troops from Milne Bay. The Takao seccumbed to flooding on her return trip.

Planning
We set most of the 17th Army to plan for Lunga. A late arriving contruction engineer to move to Buka to give us two engineer units there. The level-1 airfield at Shortlands has now reached 70%.

Thanks for the reply, JW!! I see the difference; was the same done for other cases where the Japanese formed "kampfgruppe" for special missions? That would mean fragmenting several of the divisions available to Southern Army for the drive to the south. Just interested, and trying to think about what I'll see if the game is ever released.

Well many of the Japanese "at start" divisions which were allocated to the "drive to the South" are broken down. These breakdowns are mostly "administrative" with separate infanntry regiments, artillery, engineers, recon, etc. While such an administrative breakdown does not reflect how the units actually were grouped for combat, this type of breakdown does give the player the ability to make stacks of units emphasizing the "type" composition of same. So you can bunch up the engineers or the artillery or the armor and recon if desired. Once you recombine these "pre-breakdown" units back into their divisions, then you can break them down again into more of an RCT organization as is possible with the current WITP.

This being said the organization of Horii Detachment in our S004 is rather a "one off". The additional detail making sense because of the more limited time scale of S004.

Our Fast Transport force was unable to load and clear Milne Bay, even by the afternoon, even though they started the turn at Milne Bay, so we lost a gaggle of CL and DD. I guess that will end the evacuation - the remainder of our troops at Milne Bay will have to make their way out through the Jungle.

Planning
The 22k fuel at Truk fueled off three of the 6 carroer groups - so since we still need to keep fueling the submarines carrying supply to Tass, it will be a solid 2 weeks before we will be able to fuel the remainder of the fleet. Then we will need to take some fuel to Rabaul which is down to 12k. The refill the AOs. So roughly three weeks before we can sortie again - about middle of November. Given the number of planes he can put over Guadalcanal now - even if we can deliver 10-20K supply - I'm not sure it will last long enough to get the troops ashore and walk them to Lunga. But that is the mission so we will try.

B-17s attacked Shortlands, Tass and our troops at Milne Bay. Surface ships attacked Shortlands. Our AOs are heading home. Three of our carrier groups have refueled - the other three are waiting for fuel. We have a convoy headed for Wewak and another to Shortlands.

Planning
Most of the combat troops at Truk are now planning for Lunga. Probably in late December we will try some major convoys to Tass. But we will need to try to build up supply at Tass even ahead of that time. Not sure how to do that without loosing lots of ships - but if trying to take Lunga is the mission - it will take supply!

This AAR is really driving home the emphasis on logistics and supply in AE. It is one thing for the developers to explain it but the scenario really puts it in perspective. I can only imagine the impact on the campaign game of this + strategy & operations + planning and production. Bravo guys! Can't wait to get my hands on it...

P-39s and B-17s attack our troops at Milne Bay. B-17s hit Shortlands. B-17s and F4fs his Tass. Otherwise we have supply moving from lots of A places to lots of B places while we wait for more fuel at Truk.

Planning
LCU prep continues for Lunga.

Boss, didn't get an answer before, but did you say anywhere why you were not considering tokyo express runs to save the day in tass at all?

Two reasons up to this point:

01 - Too risky. Allies can zoom surface forces in and out of Tass with little risk. So if I send fast trans with no escort they would eventually get sunk by surface forces. Also if I send too many ships in my fast trans TF they will be unable to unload and clear the port and will get sunk by the SBDs at Lunga.

02 - Too ineffcient. The amount of fuel this would take to sortee groups of destroyers every turn from Rabaul to Tass would not be affordable if we wish to use the fleet. The fuel cost per supply point delivered would be too high.

These things being said - as we approach the inevitable attack on Lunga - we will need supply at Tass - the question is how to get some there with the least amount of fuel spent - and the least number of ships sunk. Not an easy problem to solve.

I did send in one FT TF to Tass a single DD - it got in - unloaded and got away - so it is possible to send in occasional single DD and get away with it.
