Not a lot happneing Chittagong is building up and I am moving some USAAF air groups to India

IV Corps is losing 5th British Div to Middle East so I probably don't have the strength to kick the Japanese out of Imphal yet not until XV Corps can deal with Akyab

Other forces are returning after the conquest of Canton and garrison forces are en route

Next up is Guadalcanal...

why can the troops not unload?? or does it just mean not unload this turn?

No, it means they are carrying something that is too heavy for the piers at that port (i.e. whose adjusted cargo handling cost exceeds ports basic handling ability). Only hope is to expand port or bring in some Naval Support to help.

That's stupid. Now we are forced to split units based on cargo dimensions??? Suva seems it should be able to handle any piece of unit equipment. Besides, why would they put anything on a ship that can't be taken off.

So now we have to keep track of how heavy stuff is within each unit and compare it to port size?? Seems amazingly picayune.

What about American "Can Do" spirit?

Stupid. Thanks, appreciate that.

The ship obviously was loaded somewhere else, with higher cargo capacities. I do not know what it is that can be unloaded. Maybe a twin 16in shore battery? Anyway, it is something that is too large for the cargo handling limits of these ports.

The intent all along was to limit the ability to use ports based on their cargo handling capacity. Small port = small cargo handling. Several of the play testers have chaffed against this restriction, being pre-conditioned by WITP to be able to unload anything over a palm log fishing pier. Not in AE. You need to plan ahead and you need to handle congested and/or under capacity ports.

If the harbour/beach is tiny it is preventive to bring in support. Airplanes need air support and we bring it.

Holy crap that Ops report is amazing! And it has a lot of intelligence nuggets in it too...is there still a separate Intel report? I'll need a staff to sort through all that and look for trends etc. My PBEM partner will be getting a turn about once a week!

Dear Don,

We luv ya.

But what to do? I suppose the heavy stuff that can't be off-loaded is something important, and perhaps CRUCIAL. As I recall air warning radar is heavy. And it's crucial.

Will there be a table in the manual so that we know how much naval support to send for each port size so that we can unload our radar? (I feel insecure without my electronics).

I saw the table for ship ammo/ port size/ naval support in earlier posts. Do we get similar guidance for unloading?

Yours,
Johnny

Expectations mounting... I'd assume it's best to disregard some of the words used or comments made lately.

I agree that small ports shouldn't be able to handle really heavy or bulky stuff. At least not without sufficient naval support.
And if the 16in CD gun is sent back to the West Coast it's just because of poor planning on the player side. Nothing to worry about the quality of the game. Though I hope the AI can handle this stuff as well, although I'd expect some minor cheats for problems like this. Which is imho also ok.

Basically, tough! You can't unload big, heavy items at ports that can not handle them. The things you can unload will unload very slowly. You have ways to adjust this, either by moving in engineers to enlarge the port or moving in naval support to assist in loading.

There is a table of load/unload limits by port size. Naval support is a formula and it is also in the manual. Don't actually recall what it is, off hand. Something like 10 load points per naval support squad. Anyway, in this case naval support represents cargo handling crews, lighters and additional yard craft. Get enough of it and you can unload just like the fishing village was a real port.

As to what is not unloadable, I have no idea. There is just a simple formula. Device load cost, adjusted for size, against port capacity. If the load cost of one single device (adjusted) exceeds the total port capacity, you can not load or unload it there. Unless naval support is added, of course. Size adjustments are the same as WITP used for cargo offset, simply applied to cargo handling. Maximum offset is 3x, which is probably in affect for this case.

Loading something at a large port onto a non-amphibious ship and then trying to unload it at a small port is a problem. Y'all will have to plan bettter. Notice the AARs that are running - fuel and supply limits, port cargo handling limits, repair location issues. All this adds up (we hope) to a representation of the issues faced by historical commanders. The frantic pace of WITP is no longer present.

To belabor the point, you are going to have to select, capture or defend, garrison and build up bases. The map is not full of usable staging points, ala WITP. And if you decide to invade a beach or small port you will need to bring the right ships and the right support units. And it will be slower. Slower to unload, slower to build up, slower to become a major airfield, longer until you can stage a major operation from that location.

In terms of the above examples - Luganville is Port Size 1 at start. A Port Size 1 has a daily Cargo Handling limit of 100 (Port Size x100). Anything over Load Cost 100 will not be able to unload there...In addition Equipment items over Load Cost 9 are considered heavy and have 3x offset.

So if I interpret correctly - An SCR-270 Radar has a load cost of 200.... the offset causes it to seem as a 600. So to unload an SCR-270 RADAR at a Level 3 Port (Cargo Handling 300) you will need 30 Naval Support squads which add 300 to the Cargo handling limit....giving the Level 3 port a Total Cargo handling limit of 600.

AE is not the same game as WITP - so you will have to play it differently.

When I first got WPO it took me several playings to understand that WPO was different. Same thing is true for AE - it is "similar but different". A key difference is the importance of ports. And this is actually true for both WPO and AE.

Don't take "the world" to a level-1 port and expect to unload it. If you wanna take a bunch of stuff to a place, you will have to prepare that place.

Taking naval support to level-1 and level-2 ports will definitely make a difference - and will even help unload some of the engineering vehicles you will need to accelerate the building up of the port. Building up the port will then enable the unloading of "the world".

AE is not different from WITP in many ways - but it is different in some ways - and port capacity is one of those ways that it is different. If you try to play it the same way you play WITP you will get frustrated - if you step back and learn from your mistakes - and adjust - and start to play differently - and prepare your ports - and do not try to refuel TF 58 in a level-1 port etc. Then you will find yourself thinking - hey this probably models the ports restrictions better than stock! Well at least that is what I thought after I got into the AE swing of things.

And most off us will appreciate the new port and cargo handling system.
I hate it, seeing my opponent unloading a whole tank division at a level 1 port in 3 days

At least those willing to go for a new challange. The others ? Just go on playing WitP.

regards

I think one should be able to unload some of the heavy stuff..IF they'd use amphibious ships like LST? At least for stuff that could be expected to be able to move on their own power or be towed. For example, one might not be able to unload medium tanks from xAK to lvl 1 port, but I think one should be able to unload those tanks from LST. After all, if you can unload heavy stuff from LST on enemy shore, you sure as hell should be able to do it in your own port...

Yes indeedee. Amphibious ships have amphibious capability and it is very important.

Quick observation:

To me I wonder if there are too many successful Mk-14 torp attacks? Just bearing in mind the supposed Dud rate for this stage of the war?
