Status: offline 		To All Hands: I just recieved the following message from a colleuge of mine, and yes I had the virus and since it was a sleeper I may have passed it on to you. Read the following and recheck daily as advised otherwise we will be passing it back and forth.

Thought I share this with all of you. I didn't have it but will keep checking to make sure it doesn't appear.
I JUST RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION REGARDING A VIRUS THAT
AFFECTS EMAIL
ADDRESS BOOKS AND WHICH CANNOT BE DETECTED BY NORTON OR MCAFEE VIRUS
CHECKERS.
THE VIRUS STAYS QUIET FOR
14 DAYS BEFORE DAMAGING THE SYSTEM. IT IS SENT AUTOMATICALLY BY THE
MESSENGER
AND BY THE ADDRESS BOOK, WHETHER OR NOT YOU SENT EMAILS TO YOUR
CONTACTS.
I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOUND THE LITTLE TEDDY BEAR ICON AND
THE FILE
AS DESCRIBED. IF IT'S TRUE THAT IT MOVES AUTOMATICALLY BY THE ADDRESS
BOOK, I'M
AFRAID YOU NOW HAVE IT AND MAY HAVE RECEIVED IT FROM ME. WE COULD
POTENTIALLY
RECEIVE IT FROM MORE THAN ONCE SOURCE, OR EVEN PASS IT BACK AND FORTH,
SO I'M
GOING TO RECHECK MY COMPUTER EVERY FEW DAYS!THESE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO RID YOUR COMPUTER OF THIS "BUG":1. Go to the Start menu; click the Find or Search option
2. In the Files/Folder option, write the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure you search your C: drive
4. Click the Find Now/Search Now
5. The virus has a little teddy bear icon with the name
jdbgmgr.exe
DO NOT OPEN IT
6. Right click it and delete it (it will go to your Recycle bin)
7. Go to your Recycle bin and delete it from there as well.IF YOU FIND THE LITTLE BEAR ICON AND FILE, AFTER YOU DELETE IT CONTACT
ALL THE
PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN
ADDRESS BOOKS. Thank God it stays quiet for 14 days!

I don't know any other way to get this out to all of you. Can anyone add it to all forums that deal with SPWAW. If not I will add to them myself.

Status: offline 		Whoa! I'm pretty sure this is a fake virus alert designed to get you to delete needed programs! These occur fairly frequently. I read about the last one on MSN (my home page). Be extra sure before you delete programs off your computer. Trust your anti-virus, and don't be afraid to send the AV companies an email with a question like this!

Status: offline 		Did the search, found the file, deleted it. Even found it on my laptop. Thanks for the heads-up. Norton, McAfee, firewalls, all the armor that money can buy; there's always some kind of ammunition out there that can beat the defence. It may be a hoax, but why take a chance?

Goto this and check. If the link doesn't work, type it in or go to symantec, do a search for hoax. Its a few pages in.

Status: offline 		The jdbgmgr.exe is the Microsoft Debugger for Java. Your system
is supposed to have it. The hoax is designed to get you to remove it. Please check an anti-virus site before passing these kinds of messages on.

This is a hoax that, like the SULFNBK.EXE Warning hoax, tries to persuade you to delete a legitimate Windows file from your computer. The file that the hoax refers to, Jdbgmgr.exe, is a Java Debugger Manager. It is a Microsoft file that is installed when you install Windows.

It has a teddy bear icon as described in the hoax:



CAUTION: Jdbgmgr.exe, like any file, can become infected by a virus. One virus in particular, W32.Efortune.31384@mm, targets this file. Norton AntiVirus has provided protection against W32.Efortune.31384@mm since May 11, 2001.

NOTE: If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, some Java applets may not run correctly. This is not a critical system file. The file version may vary with your operating system and version of Internet Explorer. If you want to restore the file, read the instructions in the How to restore the Jdbgmgr.exefile section at the end of this document.

Status: offline 		This may be redundant, but I post it anyway, for future use. :p

Hoax virus warnings hit us about as often, if not even more, as 'real' virus warnings. Not many of us are familiar with all the nested subprograms that comes with our OS. It's apparently a lot of fun to some people to make us delete them. :rolleyes:

Things to check:

1) A real virus warning ALWAYS includes a link (URL) or other written reference from an official source, be that Microsoft, Norton, Symantec, IBM, your local newspaper or whatever.

2) If the warning does NOT have such a reference, ALWAYS check with the Anti-virus makers and OS manufacturers (Microsoft, Apple, Linux etc) sites FIRST. These guys are pros, and if it's a real warning, they will have further information, regardless how fresh the virus may be. (you're very unlikely to be hit first...). And as you all have discovered by now, they also inform about hoaxes as soon as it comes to their knowledge.

Not being a computer guy, I'm just not used to the concept of a hoax.

Next time I'll know better and check with Symantec or McAfee before doing anything on my own.

Status: offline 		On Symantecs site, they have new virus' discovered every day. They also post a date when they created a fix. It is usually the same day it was discovered, or rarely the next day. If something says that these AV companies haven't found a cure for something yet, its highly unlikely, especially in two weeks time...
