side not from my post last night. how do you go from a really crappy science fiction writer to the leader of even dumber cult

The fact that most people are dumber than a bag of hammers.

One hammer....only one.....

You got the same problem with "stupid as a box of rocks?" See, seems to me that a lot of rocks is a stupider thing than a single rock. Kinda like with rappers and pro basketball players...

I think maybe the same principle could apply to hammers, all bangin' around among themselves ... wait a minute, maybe I was thinkin' of hillbilly families ...

That's a fine recommendation, Pas. I've read 1984 years ago, but I might have to hunt down Down and Out and "Politics..."

Catch a couple of his collected short works anthologies. He was at his best in the 3-5,000 word range.

Be careful, though, Orwell is an acquired taste, kinda like single malt. Next thing you know, you may be so frustrated by the inherently decadent tendency of language use and its concomitant deteriorating influence on human thought, you'll be pedantically spouting passages from "Strunk & White" trying to save us all from doublethink and the uselessness of placing our hopes for the future in the proles...

well, maybe not...

Fellow Threadsters in some delusional state I've taken up biking again. I now have muscles that are complaining bitterly and a knee that looks like a cheap cheese pizza. Strangely there is a warm feeling of accomplishment from this weekends ride, or perhaps that is just the sunburn. I am not really sure this exorcise will lengthen my life as motor vehicles seem to view bikers as slightly more fun than joggers to run off the road. Yet compared to running, treadmills or other torture device a bike is the preferable way to go. At least until AE is released and I return to my troglodyte existence bathed in the light of a computer screen with a wall of reference books in arms reach.

Life is good Tithe

"An autobiography is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful. A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats." Orwell really had Dali figured out, didn't he?

Also:

I'm not a fan for “fighting on the beaches,”
And still less for the “breezy uplands” stuff,
I seldom listen-in to Churchill's speeches,
But I'd far sooner hear that kind of guff
Than your remark, a year or so ago,
That if the Nazis came you'd knuckle under
And peaceably “accept the status quo.”
Maybe you would! But I've a right to wonder
Which will sound better in the days to come,
“Blood, toil and sweat” or “Kiss the Nazi's bum.”

From his “As One Non-Combatant to Another (A Letter to ‘Obadiah Hornbooke’)”.

Good stuff, tgw! Biking is my preferred endurance activity, but I've not had enough chance to practice it lately.

I am not sure I want to play a game in which I may lose my winkie. This reminds me of a science fiction book by Harlan Ellison, I think. In a side note in the book there was a gambling device in Las Vegas where you could do precisely that

Some days, I worry AE is like Xeno's tortoise, and we only close half the remaining distance at a time.

Summer has arrived   It's a good feeling being sat at home knowing the rest of the world is enjoying their Monday at work   Not so sure I'll feel this way on Wednesday.  Or when I'm doing the nightshift

Well, I am at work, and I'm not really loving answering questions about self-study credit, which is really the purview of the state bar's MCLE board, not me. I am sorely tempted to make things up.

"To receive Mandatory Continuing Legal Education credit for a self-study course, you must slay a foul fire-breathing dragon or bust a trust, whichever is harder in your area."
