Crazy Aido inspired me to do an AAR of my 3rd try at a Campaign Game.

This AAR will start off in the middle of the 3rd Battle.

Situation:
Well, the first two battles I got my ass handed to me on a silver platter.Took quite abit of losses, and have to put those guys in the rear.

This mission I finally get tanks, which should be very helpful.I already have 3 shermans already. The Bocage makes it hard to manuver my men sometimes run into MG positions. The Below Pic should tell the rest:

Turn 6 of 16

Turn 7 of 16

Right Flank

The MG on does a stupid move, allowing a full company of men open fire and for the MG to retreat.I take a few shots at the rifle platoon on the 50 point V-hex.The M4 Sherman does a great job of providing fire support.

Pic of the Right flank:

Turn 8 of 16

Nothing really happens on the Right flank, I try to move my sherman up but it gets taken out by a rifle platoon. No more armor support for Right flank.

However, alot of action on the left flank.I lose 1 sherman, but mange to break through, taking an improved position over looking the area.I take heavy loses from Op-fire from the mansion, and nock out the AA Halftrack on the same hex.My other company has taken heavy loses and I have decided to retreat them back, as you you can see in the pic:

Turn 9 of 16

The enemy does a sneaky counter attack trying to take back that 25 point Victory hex.I send Lt Winters and a Platoon to reinforce the V-Hex:

The enemy even tries a flank attack on the left flank, good thing I withdrew that company as they stopped them in their tracks.I lose another sherman to the same rifle platoon. I have pretty much reduced the MG in the mansion to nothing.I expect to take it next turn:

Turn 10 of 16

This turn sadly I didnt take out the MG in the Mansion.Next turn I'm just going to rush and hope for the best.Nothing worth to show in a screenshot.

On the Right, I move my Company, closing on the town and plotting artillery.

Right Flank:

Turn 11 of 16

I am able to take both hexes this turn.

Now I just have to defend them from counterattack.

Hi V22,

thanks a lot for your Battle report, it's always a pleasure to read the LCG Battle reports, i remember one made by Jugallo concerning the invasion of England, it was massive but it was a blast to read it, i hope your «screaming eagles» go all the way into the Eagle's Nest...
I must say you have a very tough nut to crack here, i think this is the Dead man's Corner Scenario, the only Congressional Medal of Honor given to the 101st Airborne in the Normandy Campaign was won here, near the house, when Lt. Col. Robert Cole lead his men in a bayonet charge across an open field in the face of Machine gun fire...
I had always asked myself why this battle wasn't in the «regular» scenarios and when i was playing this campaign i found it here, it was a pleasant surprise, but i'm talking about the scenario not about the opposition i found it here...
Be advised, if you go through this Carentan comes next, i think, and it's also a difficult one...
Good luck, and good LCG.

Same turn

Wait a minute!

My men make a daring come back, forcing 4 enemy units to retreat.Capt. Hancock and his men take back the mansion as well as my right flank holds off a counter attack on the 50 pt V-hex on the right. This is some intense stuff!

Turn 14 of 16

One platoon is completely wiped out.The germans are making a solid defence of the 100 pt V-Hex.The enemy seems to be trying to cut of the mansion. This isn't good. Now I think my best bet is to hold the V-hexes I have.My men are just up for the task of taking that 100 pt V-hex.

Turn 15 of 16

The germans are giving it to us hard.

Capt Hnacock is putting up a spirited defence of the mansion:

Meanwhile my men on the right are holding up pretty well.

Final Turn.

My men hold!!!

Well, it was a tough battle. another major defeat for me but I'd say my men did pretty well.Capt Hancock should be awarded the medal of honor for his actions in battle.

Here is the final screen:

Thanks for reading.Any questions, comments?Any tips on tactics?

I get this screen:

I lost the Campaign. Here is my performance review:

Final Thoughts:
This is a pretty damn tough campaign. The bocage make it really hard to manuvuer, and most of time you run into hidden MGs and improved positions.Overall I enjoyed the campaign, even though I lost.

Hi V22 Osprey,

Your AAR insprired me to try this LCG again, as it has been many years since I've played it.

You're right, it is a tough one....I only received a Draw the first two scenarios....

One thing that bothers me is the fact that the Germans have the standard '6' for morale which suggests they are fairly well trained and led.

But the opposite should be true.
These German units are from the 709. Infanterie Division and had no combat experience until D-Day. It is a static, coastal defense division which was often picked clean of its most able bodied men to serve on the Ost Front.

I would think a morale rating of '3' or '4' would better simulate the situation.

One thing that made the this LCG hard was the fact your Platoons only have 3 strength max(18 men), while the germans have full 6 strength platoons so this means that my airborne platoons were decimated by op-fire alone.Plus you only get 2 measly replacement points.

I might do an AAR on the Winter War DCG.I enjoyed the first time I played it.

Actually the paratroops have a max of 4 SPs.
This must of changed with the last patch or so....I'm pretty sure they were a standard 6 SPs back in the day.

I'm no expert on US Airborne forces, but I guess this was done to reflect a more accurate TO&E.

German strength is accurate...the 709. Infanterie was at full strength on D-Day.

When the new patch comes out, I think I might edit the German OOB and lower morale, plus replace their troops with the Green units which we now have in East Front.

Been away from the board for a while; any updates in this area?

I played the first three scenarios last weekend and did fairly well.  I had a Minor Victory in the first (Varreville), a Major Victory at Ste. Marie-du-Mont and a Minor Victory (thanks to a lucky, last-turn tank rush on the southernmost 100 point VL) in this scenario.  I gave up the ghost even before trying the next (Carentan) scenario because my core battalion had been decimated.  Several platoons were down to one SP and my support platoons were in a similar state.  I was in pretty bad shape after the Varreville battle; there was very little left after Ste. Come-du-Mont.

I was quite surprised by the resiliency of the Germans, particularly since I knew that the 506th had faced an inexperienced division prior to the encountering the FJ at Carentan.  In any event, the three battles that I played were great fun, but I do believe that the German morale needs to be lowered.  I would also think that the 506th's replacement rate needs a boost... at least prior to the Carentan battles.

The same thing happened to me when playing this «new» version of the campaign, whilst in the old Talonsoft version i had arrived to the end of her...
The main problem, imho, is that this campaign has been completely unbalanced due to the reduction of US paratroop platoons from 6SP'S to 4SP'S, as the reinforcements are the same of the old Talonsoft version it is impossible to be able to withstand the losses caused by the germans in the first scenarios of the campaign, if the para platoons had the old 6SP'S this would be perfectly feasible but as it is, with our forces reduced in 1/3 of their former strength, and the german forces retaining the same units and SP'S...
What i always loved in these campaigns was how «finetuned» the forces were so that this managed to «hide» the inability of the computer to fight against a human opponent, i had very «nailbiting» moments when fighting the LCG'S of the Campaign series so please, please, don't «touch them» very much because this can completely unbalance the gameplay of them..
Just a small question to my fellow campaign gamers, has anyone finished with sucess the Force 10 Storm LCG, in West Front? I had always arrived at the last mission, in the two times i played it, you have to capture some Coastal guns, but the German Forces there are very strong! I was made a POW in both ocasions...

My problem was that by the time of this mission, my battalion was decimated. The strongest unit I had was 3 SP, half down to 2 SP, and a third of the battalion down to 1 SP.
Ridiculous. That's why I had to keep my companies in large groups, otherwise they would be wiped out on their own.How many replacement points we get? 2 points!
