you should realy talk to paul so he reduces the alt. of his bombers. this 30k ft. bombers with laser guided bombs are simply unrealistic. if paul is a fair opponent, he will accept that.

I donīt want to bring up another issue as the issue about flying out troops from Wyndham with transports that canīt even reach the base was discussion enough and led to nowhere. And Iīm now fighting at least three combat divisions that have been flown out to Alice Springs and are now marching North. I will try to find a way to solve the issue. And if itīs just that I will do super high alt kami attacks in 18 months or so...

when playing the scenario a house rule preventing the altitude exploit is suggested. (in the FAQ)

yeah, I remember reading it now... been over a year since Iīve last read the FAQ. First I didnīt think it would be an issue becauses seriously, how should a bomber formation hit an airfield from 36.000ft? Itīs not much of a problem to overfly effective flak range (or completely overflying flak range), itīs more of a problem when the game goes nuts and 4Es hit an airfield from 36.000ft disabling 2000 troops in one turn and destroying 10.000 supplies. THAT is nuts...

coupled with the uber effect of the pretty high durability of 4Es in this version results in 400 bombers launched, non is hit by flak, 400 hits on the airfield and 1 bomber lost...

Yeah, I'm playing against AI as the Allies with a Nik-mod like variation, and I can say it certainly makes things a lot easier for the allies. Early on in the war at least, any base is utterly vulnerable to B-17's. Even raids of only less than 30 bombers, no escort, get through about 90 zeros at Truk, and destroy 25 or so aircraft on the ground from 15k+.

I bombed down Kwajalein from Wake Is. and the AI's poor performance not withstanding, the 3 IJN base forces there should have been able to better defend the base and fewer aircraft should have been destroyed by relatively small raids.

No matter how you look at it, flak and bomber adjustments are just plain excessive. ---I can only imagine the strength of massed B-29's ugh.

I donīt want to think about B-29s at the moment, thatīs just plain scary. Dropping four times the bombs of a B-17 and you can imagine what damage they will do from 30.000ft when there are 200 of them incoming. Wonīt be any chance to defend a target within the 20 hexes of a B-29 base. I will have Franks by then and radar but I donīt have any hopes I can withstand the B-29 raids as itīs just not possible to cover every important base within B-29 range with 400 Franks each. And as the enemy probably wonīt be in range of Japan by then, Iīm pretty sure that the B-29s will do massive tactical attacks on airfields. With the huge numbers available I guess there wonīt be any Allied medium bombers left or at least there wonīt be a reason to use medium bombers anymore as the 4Es and the super heavy 4Es will nuke everything with stratosphere bombing anyway.

Again, I donīt have a real problem with overflying flak range, the problem is the absolutely off hit rate of high exp bombers. Weakness of the game. And I have to say itīs even a bit better than in Nikmod because Nik has reduced the bombload of some bombers, so in stock the hit rate would be even higher and I would suffer 3000 casualties in one turn from stratosphere bombing for one or two bombers lost out of 400.

Miller moved in his Russian bombers and I missed to look at my TK convoy that left Ohka Sakkalin exactly today, leaving into the wrong direction... leaking Cap from the base was enough to turn some bombers back and we were lucky that 60+ bombers only achieve 3 bomb hits that wonīt sink any of the two hit ships... again, this convinces me of finishing off the bases in central Russian held territory and as the development is at the moment, Iīm confident that we can achieve that soon...

The nuclear bombings out of the stratosphere that caused several thousand casualties each turn forced me to move out all my troops from Charter Towers. Only the para rgt was left behind and Miller tried to take advantage of this, dropping his paras on the base. Iīm amazed that only one USMC para unit was dropped and not three or four at once. I guess he should have enough of them (donīt know where they are though) and he surely has easily enough C-47 in the area as he was able to lift a whole inf division to Townsville in one turn.

Screenshot of the situation in Russia. Irkutsk is isolated in the North as only base left there. The Russian probably have 3000+ av there already, further growing as the enemy divs are rebuilding. As soon as we have mopped up the two bases North of Khabarovsk we will have succesfully ended our attack on the central regions. Blagoveshchensk and Iman will be starvet to death. Perhaps we will take out Iman to free up the divs there but the hex being moutaineous terrain this would just take too much time and too many troops. Blagoveshchensk is the optimal training target for the years to come. There are three bases in one hex range that can house something like 1000 ac and it canīt be any better. One hex range is perfect, two hexes range would result in too many op losses already.

Iīm not sure if we will ever be able to take out Irkutsk as it stands now. We will see if we can knock down the forts there with something like 15 or 16 eng rgts. If not, we will retreat and only hold the position against the enemy trying to come down from the North at some point.

TF 46 encounters mine field at Munda (64,95)

Japanese Ships
MSW Hakata Maru #7
MSW Hagoromo Maru
MSW Fukeui Maru #7
MSW Choun Maru #7
MSW Choun Maru #6
MSW Banshu Maru #56
AK Tairyu Maru, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

sub laid mines... the MSW draw the AKs into the minefield. Two minefields encountered, both are cleared and both times the last mine hits the AK. One Allied mine is easily enough for a Japanese AK and two send it immedietely to the bottom... guess it takes at least four IJN mines to sink an Allied AK though...

Probably another stupid Q, but I'll ask anyway. Why not make a MSW-TF and set the transporters on follow? Would not this atleast make it possible that the MSWs would make a path through the field before the transports arrive?

there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers sometimes lately...

if I would have known that there are mines I would have sent a MSW TF first, after one turn all mines would have been cleared and then the AKs would go in. Problem was, I didnīt know that an (or a couple) of Allied subs laid mines here.

90% of the Allied sorties can be seen as training runs at the moment... what really pisses me off is the fact that the Allied fighters in the Pacific take 0.001% op losses doing daily training runs at 5 and 6 hexes, which means at MAX range for those fighters. Op losses just donīt exist for the Allied in this mod.

once again a prove of not being carefully enough. I know about the enemy bombers at Port Moresby and sent some APs to Gasmata without having fighters there to cover them. Result is an unescorted strike that shreds my TF. One AP goes down immedietely, another one will probably sink. Nearly 50% hit rate with 500lb bombs means those Barracudas are damned experienced already...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 22,48

Japanese Ships
PC Amakusa
PC Hirado
PC Kanju

Allied Ships
SS Haddock, hits 7

one of my better ASW TFs... 7 near misses...

Sub attack near Tarakan at 33,61

DD Yayoi, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hatsuyuki
DD Isonami
DD Usugumo

Allied Ships
SS Ray, hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

this time the sub succesfully attacks first, the DD is hit hard. In return the sub is reported SUNK after two direct hits with Type 95 DCs... our DD will be disbanded into Tarakanīs level 4 port, an AR was ordered to move in flank speed and we will also bring in a nav HQ to try to save the precious DD. Wonīt be easy with 65 flt and still 20+ fire... trading a DD for a sub would be a bad deal as the Allied have far more subs than I have DDs...

nearly a 1:1, our main problem will be the Allied super ability to create a Maginot line like position out of a foxhole within one week. When looking at the combat replay and the troops that are at Townsville then I guess it wonīt take longer than 7-10 days to build up the forts from 8 to 9... this means that this ability will stop us... easy as it is...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/26/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Siador at 54,85

Japanese Ships
AK Indus Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Gunnel

I prove to be dumb again... Gunnel has been spotted for at least three days sitting at this base and I thought I would have to be unlucky if it really gets a shot at the two small AKs coming in to bring some supplies... guess the chances to attack for an Allied sub at this stage of the war are at least 70%. Got a Kate daitai on nav search here but so far nothing...

as if one torp wouldnīt be enough for a small IJN AK, another 3 immedietely send it to the bottom...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 25,62

Japanese Ships
APD APD-38

Allied Ships
SS Triton, hits 5, on fire, heavy damage

We have ordered one of our ASW TFs to hunt down Triton that succesfully attacked one of our TK convoys yesterday. Our ASW TF spots the sub and we see only the lead APD attacking because this APD was enough to sink the sub immedietely. Dozens of DCs dropped resulted in three direct hits and two near misses, sending Triton to the fish... BANZAI

IJN ASW forces sank the US sub SS Triton near Borneoīs West coast today. BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

Triton (SS 201)

The fourth of our submarines lost in the Solomons-Bismarck area in the early part of 1943, Triton, commanded by Lieutenant Commander G. K. MacKenzie, Jr., left Brisbane on 16 February 1943 to begin her sixth patrol in that area. She hunted for traffic between Rabaul and Shortland Basin on her way north, and began to patrol the equator between 154°E, and 156°E, on 23 February.

She reported on 26 February having seen smoke on 22 February, and that she had obtained evidence of enemy radar on Buka. Moving westward, she patrolled areas northwest of Snapper and southeast of Trigger from 26 February to 6 March, when she left her area to attack a convoy in Trigger's area. Her report on 7 March, amended by another 8 March, stated that the convoy had been composed of 5 ships and 1 Destroyer escort. She reported their speed and course and the fact that she had sunk two cargo ships of the convoy and damaged another, claiming 3 hits out of 6 torpedoes fired at noon 6 March. A circular torpedo run forced her deep, where she was depth-charged by the destroyer. She had later tried two night attacks, one dawn attack, and one afternoon attack, all without success, and was returning to her area at the time she sent the message. About eight hours after this message came, Triton transmitted another telling of another night attack on the convoy. She claimed 5 hits of 8 torpedoes fired, and, although she could not observe results due to gunfire and attack by the escorting destroyer, she believed two more freighters to be sunk.

The last word received from Triton came on 11 March 1943 when she reported, "Two groups of smokes, 5 or more ships each, plus escorts. . . Am chasing". She was ordered to stay south of the Equator, and was informed of the area (an adjacent one) assigned Trigger.

On the morning of 13 March Triton was told that three enemy destroyers had been sighted at 2°-00'S, 145° -44'E on a northerly course. She was informed that they were probably on a submarine hunt or were a convoy cover and had missed contact.

Triton, on 16 March, was ordered to change her area slightly to the east. Tuna and Greenling were placed in adjacent areas (to the south and west, respectively) on 22 March, and all were to disregard areas when on the chase, and to avoid when encountering a submarine. Triton was told to clear her area on 25 March 1943, and return to Brisbane. When she failed to make her report of position, new results, and estimated time of arrival when it was expected, she was ordered to do so. No report was received and she was reported as lost on 10 April 1943.

Information available now that the war is over shows that Triton was, without a doubt, sunk by the enemy destroyers of which she was given information on 13 March. Enemy reports show that these ships made an attack on 15 March at 0°-09'N, 144°-55'E. This position was slightly north and west of Triton's area, but she undoubtedly left her area to attack the destroyers or the convoy they were escorting. The report of the attack the destroyers leaves little doubt as to whether a kill was made, since they saw "a great quantity of oil, pieces of wood, corks and manufactured goods bearing e mark 'Made in U.S. A'." In addition, Trigger, in whose area this attack occurred, reported that on 15 March she made two attacks on a convoy of five freighters with two escorts at 0°N, 145° E. At this time she was depth charged, but not seriously, and she heard distant depth charging for an hour after the escorts had stopped attacking her. Since she was only about ten miles from the reported Japanese attack cited above, it presumed that she heard the attack which sank Triton. Apparently by this time the destroyers had joined their convoy.

Triton was a most active and valuable member of the Submarine Force prior to her loss. In total, she is credited with sinking 16 ships, totaling 64,600 tons, and damaging 4 ships, of 29,200 total tons. Her first patrol, conducted around Wake Island, resulted in no damage to the enemy, but her second, in the northern part of the East China Sea, was very productive. In ten days she sank two freighters and damaged a freighter-transport and another freighter. She went back to the East China Sea for her third patrol, and again was most successful. She sank a trawler, two freighters, a freighter-transport, two sampans, and a submarine. The latter was 1-64, torpedoed south of Kyushu on 17 May, 1942. Triton's fourth patrol was made in the Aleutians. During it, she is credited with sinking two escort-type vessels.

On her fifth patrol, Triton went into the Solomon area. She sank a tanker, and two freighters, in addition damaging a tanker of 10,200 tons and a freighter. She was credited with having sunk two medium freighters on her last patrol.

so what about that? This is the perfect example of what Iīm saying all the time: Try to defend with your troops in the mountains. Only an urban hex is better. There are five units reported with one unit obviously being a HQ as it didnīt show up in the combat replay. Two of the four remaining units didnīt have any assault value, only two defending base forces seem to have something like 40 av. This coupled with the mountain hex and level 6 forts lead to an adjusted av of 1213!!! Not bad if your base av gets multiplied by 13.62. That way two base forces can easily hold against four attacking IJA divisions.

SS Runner has been reported sunk by IJN ASW forces. Note that Runner was presumable sunk by an IJN mine in real life, the chance to see an Allied sub being sunk after hitting an IJN mine in WITP is about 1:6... how can that be...

Runner (SS 275)

On 28 May 1943 Runner (Lieutenant Commander J.H. Bourland) left Midway to proceed to Latitude 48°-30'N, Longitude 154°E and begin her third patrol. She was to patrol south and west from this spot, until she came into the area south of Hokkaido and east of the northern tip of Honshu, where she was to patrol from about 8 June to 4 July 1943. The submarine was never heard from following her departure from Midway.

She was expected at Midway about 11 July, and not later than 15 July, and should have made a transmission when approximately 500 miles from this base. She was ordered on 11 July to make an immediate transmission, but no reply came. Although a careful lookout was maintained in the hope that Runner was safe but without transmission facilities, results were negative. On 20 July Runner was reported as presumed lost.

A summary of Japanese antisubmarine attacks received since the close of hostilities contains no mention of an attack which could explain the loss of Runner. Thus her loss must be ascribed to an enemy mine-field, of which there were at least four in the area to which she was assigned, to an operational casualty, or to an unreported enemy attack. Destruction by a mine is considered the most likely of these possibilities.

This ship sank three ships, totaling 19,800 tons, and damaged three more, for 19,000 tons, on her first two patrols. Runner patrolled the Palau area on her first war run in February 1943, and all of her sinkings were made here. She sank three medium freighters, and damaged two more. During her second patrol off Hong Kong in the South China Sea, Runner damaged a freighter.

how many IJA and IJN bombers are you using on nav search to hunt and hurt his SS ? I mean since he does stratospheric bombing with regular 4E bombers, you using the ahistorical capacity of the IJAAF and IJNAF to hunt his SS would only be fair, if only as a bargaining tool : "I'll stop doing it if you stop doing the strat bombing except with B29" ?

I donīt use a single IJN medium bomber daitai at all as they wouldnīt hit enemy subs anyway. Guess Iīm using something like 10 daitais/sentais on the whole map for nav search. Means thatīs something like 325 IJA bombers in total. Sounds a lot in the first place but the map is big, two sentais are stationed in India for example. Iīve got a hr for myself of never using more than one IJA medium bombers sentai per base and not using them on bases when their range is overlapping more than 2 hexes. If memory serves correctly (Iīm at work at the moment) then I have 5 daitais/sentais within the SRA. One at Singapore, one on Java, two on Borneo and one on Sulawesi.

Itīs funny that you mention my IJA bombers because yesterday during exchanging turns I stated that it seems all his subs were heading home (the game is actually more than a week ahead of the AAR at the moment). Miller said that it doesnīt make sense due to the fact that his subs usually only hit with one torp (which is often not enough to sink a ship) and that my 90 exp Helens keep on hitting his subs and his work is mostly to send his subs in, they get hit by a Helen and then have to head home. I canīt say that the Helens/Sallies achieved excessive hits though (and they are not at 90 exp anyway) but they regularly spot and often also attack subs. My stomach tells me that one out of five t seven attacks achieves a hit and then surely 80% of the subs manage to make port easily if not attacked by ASW or airsearch again. I have sunk a lot of subs in port early on and when looking at the sunken ships, then those that were not destroyed due to my port attacks then kills from bombers are around 50% and the other 50% goes to my ASW forces. When looking at the Allied and Japanese sub losses than I have lost more subs to bombs from nav search ac than the Allied and Iīm usually not operating within the enemyīs bomberīs range.

Miller must have a hundred subs by now (just a rough guess) and lately something like two dozen seemed to operate in my waters achieving a kill now and then. What strikes me is the tactic of how he employs his subs which is totally different from what Iīm doing as the Allied (and to a far lesser extend also as the Japanese early on). Miller seems to use single subs that are always moving somewhere. It seems he orders them to go to a destination (most times one of my bases) and then they are immedietely ordered to move to another base or place. This surely makes them harder to catch but they are also not really effective. If you play as the Allied your first task in the sub warfare is to figure out which shipping lanes the Japanese use. Better say, how does one get all the stuff to Japan, where are the hubs, are there small TFs, big ones, separate escort TFs, etc. As soon as you have figured that out you can employ your subs efficiently. Iīm usuall using them in Wolfpacks of at least four subs (not in one TF and only one sub per hex of course) to operate in a shipping lane I know that is in use. If a Japanese TF runs across four or even more Allied subs in a row then you can be sure that this TF will end up with two or three ships less when the subs have radar and working torps. Then move on before the ASW forces show up or the Japanese uses five Helen sentais in this area alone (which is something I donīt do anyway as I find that absolutely off). Even though five subs sunk by Helens in one turn might be fun for many Japanese players, itīs far from fun for me, thatīs just off and doesnīt show how good a player you are at all. Sink five subs with ASW TFs in one turn shows that youīre a good player...

Using the Wolfpacks works pretty good for me and thatīs what usually causes the Japanese headache. Sending two dozen subs around on their own from one place to another is not really effective as this PBEM shows pretty well. Most times the subs just stumble over one of my TFs but they arenīt really "hunting" in my shipping lanes. Use more subs in one area and itīs easy most times. One sub attacks or spots a TF, five more subs are around. Then guess where the TF is going (most times not that hard inside the SRA) and send all your subs flank speed into the expected path of the enemy TF. BOOM... a succesful attack by three or four subs on a Japanese TK convoy can ruin the day of the Japanese. Not just the day, the whole year.

We enter Oct 43 and in just 7 months the skies will be full of B-29s... I see my Empire going down rapidly... In three months we should get our first Type 13 land based radar sets. 30 each month... We should also get Jacks and Georges in 1/44 as the Jack R&D was already succesful and moved the arrival date by one month. With some luck, we could get the Jack even before Christimas 43. This new fighter will be the back bone of the IJNAF fighter daitais.

the AK enters Cairnsī hex and is sunk by another sub waiting there... Iīve mostly withdrawn my subs from dangerous areas after the disaster during the Allied attack on Canton when Allied ASW forces sunk or heavily damaged two dozen subs in three days... task of my subs for now are mostly patrolling to alert me when enemy attacks are going into my territory and to attack a TF with hopefully just a few escorts now and then... we wonīt really see excessive kills from IJN subs anymore... enemy ASW forces are just too powerful...

lol, we have five IJA divisions that are fully combat ready and try another time to take this base from two Russian base forces... again a try that achieved nothing at all... what do I need? Another five divisions to achieve a 1:1?

Are you sure you have all your guys set to attack here???

yes I really had all my guys to attack... this was just one of the attacks, there werre no less than five highly experienced and fully combat ready (not prepped for this base at all though) IJA divs attacking... and... failing... where the game is now, I was able to take it finally though. The only good thing is that at least an insane high adjusted av of the defender still doesnīt mean that your attacking troops get shredded. Youīre just not able to take the base and thatīs it. Nevertheless a really surprising experience.

this attack has cost us no less than 7.000 supply points!!! Supply dropped from around 40.000 to 33.000. Thought this base would last forever with such an amount of supply but Iīm apparantly wrong...

amazing number of 4 bombers out of 200+ was lost in this attack... there are at least four dozen big calibre AA guns on the atoll but that means nothing... and the enemy is only coming in at 10.000ft...

all the flak we have is just useless... in the Cairns/Townsville are we have something like 70% of all our AA rgt/btn on the whole map. Yes, I have nearly stripped Japan and completely stripped Manchuria of all AA units and they are just useless... give me five Allied base forces and I would trade all my Japanese AA units for it... the efficiency per gun tube is surely 10+ higher when you compare one Allied to one Japanese AA gun and Iīve been wondering since this PBEMīs start if this is correct. The difference between Allied and Japanese flak guns is even higher in this mod than it is in stock. In stock you could still attack Allied bases, in this Nikmod this is impossible...
