Air: At Sian 24 Ann score 2 airbase hits, 2 airbase supply hits and 7 runway hits.
At Homan 21 Zero tangles with a CAP of 17 Tomahawk.  1 Zero is lost and 2 Tomahawk are reported destroyed.
At Kweiyang 20 Sonia bomb 59th Chinese Corps and cause 13 casualties.

Philippines
Land:  At Bataan Japanese bombardment causes 149 casualties, 3 guns and 1 vehicle lost.

Land: Japanese bombardment at Banjarmasin causes 14 Allied casualties.

Central Pacific
Air: 24 Nell and 17 Betty escorted by 24 Zero set out from Wake Island in search of the contact located the day before.  A task force containing BBs Tennessee, California, Pennsylvania and Arizona is located and bombed without effect.  1 Nell is destroyed by flak.

Subs
South of Banjarmasin SS KXVII picks out DD Asakaze in the escort for a surface action task force and gets 1 torpedo hit causing 33 63 23 damage.  Nasty but hopefully she can make it to Balikpapan before the flooding gets too much worse.  No follow attacks by the escort so the sub gets clean away.
Near Singapore a Sally reports a hit on SS KXIV.

CA Minneapolis (reported as scuttled from the Enterprise group – this now makes 2 cruisers sunk from that action)

The air strike against the American fleet was not what I had hoped it would be.  Is this my inexperience haunting me by setting the bombers at 12000 for a naval strike – should they have been set at 100 to ensure a torpedo strike or is one of those distance things where they will only carry bombs after a certain number of hexes?  In any event I have sent all the planes at Wake Island anywhere but there as the battleships are now within range to conduct some bombardment exercises.  All that is left are 6 damaged Betty plus their rather well trained pilots.  I’m expecting an invasion as well and am sure that Todd will have sent a considerable force.  My fort level is only at 1 and screen shot below shows what land units is currently on the island.  Quite a lot of men but not too much offensive power I’m afraid.

I was a bit despondent about all of this until it occurred to me (1 turn later than it should have) that I had 3 perfectly good carriers (Akagi, Zuikaku and Junyo plus Kirishima and Hiei) sitting in ports at the Home Islands patching up some minor repairs.  It occurred to me that if Todd was in fact doing an invasion he is likely to be there for some time so there may well be a great opportunity to sneak in with these 3 carriers and get amongst some transport shipping.  That is of course assuming an invasion is on.  The ships are madly scrambling with a rendezvous south of the HI scheduled before attempting to turn up somewhere to the north of Wake Island.  Just have to get them past the sub picket that Todd has set up off shore from the HI without being observed.  If this goes to plan it should be a surprise to Todd as I’m fairly certain that he has put this operation in motion in the belief that he has accounted for KB being in the Coral Sea.  We shall soon see.

Here is the disposition of forces around Wake Island.  Not much to do for the time being but sit back and see what the Americans have planned.

The excitement at Wake Island did not eventuate.  An American task force containing an assortment of warships was last seen heading east well away from Wake Island.  I’m not sure if this was a recon in force or Todd thought better of it after 50+ bombers made a fruitless attack on the fleet the day before.  In any event Wake Island remains within Japanese territory.  The result at Bataan holds out the prospect of a swift conclusion to this campaign.  My troops will spend a few days bombarding and reducing their disruption levels.  Preparations for the assault on Hengchow are almost complete and the assault should commence within the week.

Naval Losses for the Day
MSW Hinode Maru #20, AP Baikal Maru (last of the damaged AP from the Enterprise raid on Wake Island she had been stuck at Wake attempting to bring flooding down to an acceptable level and left harbour after the American fleet was sighted.  Flooding was in the 80s and raced to the 90s and she was scuttled)  As it turned out I should have left her where she was.

Comments
So far the AVG stationed at Homan has been a good target for the Zero pilots.  For the loss of 1 Zero at least 10 Tomahawk have been destroyed in aerial engagements.  The American fleet continues to steam east and Todd messages that he likes to keep a respectful distances from torp tot'n girls called Betty and Nell.

Troops are in position for the assault upon Hengchow.  I believe there are sufficient forces surrounding the city to make a break out very difficult let alone the forces currently preparing for the assault.  Screen shot shows current force disposition with the blue line denoting the current front line.

on Midway & torp attacks;
is midway a LVL 4 airfield allready? 'cause you need lvl 4 to launch torps
(betty's fly torp missions on their normal alt.)

couldn't tell from the screenshots, but i don't think it is atm??

and on the Hengchow surrounding;
hit the W button and check zones of controle, an engaged unit can only move to a place where there is no hostile controle
(so if you're fighting allies in a hex, your units cant move to another hex if there's an "A" in it).
From what you posted earlier on i assumed that you guys had house rules on surrounding enemies, but i'm starting to doubt
that this was what you meant.

in short, if you have a "J" in all surrounding hexes around Hengchow he isn't able to move out, the only thing you could worry about is a Chenese wargroup sent out to change this controle zone, but otherwise there's no reason to keep 10K of troops in every hex (it is however needed to send a small unit to a neighboring hex to claim japanese controle).

Just imagine that the Chinese troops are imprisoned within the 60X 60 hex, you can have a lot of troops in 30 x 30 km's afterall.
this way you can muster more forces within Henchow to finish of the enemy, instead of just surrounding them.

so remember; hit the "W" button every now & then

Another attack on surface action task force by 2 Martin 139 sees 1 Martin destroyed by a CAP of 9 Zero.
2 Zero locates PT TM-5 and report 4 hits and vessel seen to be on fire.
Another aerial assault this time by 3 Demon CW-31B, 3 Brewster 339D and 10 T.IVa sees 2 Brewster and 1 T.IVa destroyed by the CAP of 10 Zero.  MSW Fumi Maru #2, however, is hit by 1 torpedo and she sinks.

My previous post regarding troop dispositions around Hengchow was posted out of order (should have been after this post).  The assault on Hengchow is set for 26 February 1942.  The aerial assault on Bataan resumes.  The bombers have not flown for a few days for reasons unknown so I changed orders to bomb the airfield and we are back in business.  Bombing of Port Moresby has commenced as early preparation for the eventual invasion.

Later in the day a Dutch strike of 9 Hawk 75A, 3 Demon CW-21B and 5 T.IVa locates another surface action task force.  This time the Japanese have a CAP of 16 Zero up.  1 Zero is destroyed in exchange for 1 Hawk and 1 T.IVa destroyed and no ships damaged.

Thanks flaggelant. I'd forgotten about airfields needing to be at level 4. Wake Island is still at 3 and I am working at changing that now. Guess that was a lucky escape as tocaff could have kept on coming and braved those bombs that bounce off battleships and then caused plenty of havoc by bombarding the island. Lucky break for me and good lesson for this and future games.

I'll be checking out the W button. Our house rules aren't specific on the point of encirclement but it is caught under a gentlemen's agreement we have (eg if it doesn't seem right don't do it). A number of hexes did have for quite some time less than 1 000 infantry holding the line. I did not appreciate that in game terms a small force such as this would preclude a break out, however, I tend towards thinking that a much larger force would generally be required for this job. From reading Todd's comments in a post on this issue I know he is of the same view..... therefore a bit of time was taken to bring to numbers up to scratch. I think in game terms it is worth doing and ensures there is no ill feeling generated by using minimal forces for this tactic. I know there are plenty of different views out there and this is where I stand. Besides I'm having a ball in China and have captured far more than I expected in such a short time!

Air: At Bataan 12 Betty and 43 Helen bomb 21st PA Division and cause 96 Allied casualties and 2 guns lost.
Land:  Troops are ashore at Ormoc.
At Bataan a Japanese shock attack is ordered.  The forts are reduced to level 0 and assault odds of 15 to 1 are achieved and the base is captured.  Japanese losses reported as 2258 casualties and 35 guns and 5 vehicles lost.  60 443 Allied prisoners are captured along with 214 guns and 88 vehicles lost.  The following units surrendered:

118th USN Base Force, 101st, 103rd, 104th, 105th, 106th, 109th and 111th USAAF Base Forces, 1st, 2nd, 21st and 31st PA Divisions, 88th USA Field Artillery Regiment, 86th USA Coastal Gun Battalion, 192nd and 194th USA Tank Battalions, 14th PS Engineer Regiment, 803rd Engineer Aviation Battalion, 1st USMC AA Battalion, Corregidor CI Fortress, 4th USMC Regiment and PAF Aviation Regiment.

DEI
Air:  North of Banjarmasin 18 Nell bomb Samarinda Garrison Battalion and cause 20 casualties.
South of Pontianak 2 Brewster 339D and 5 Martin 139 take on a CAP of 33 Zero resulting in 2 Martin shot down.  The survivors make a run on Nagato and drop 1 bomb on the battleship causing no damage.

Central Pacific
Sea:  DD Isonami makes port at Marcus Island after leaving Wake Island.  The journey was unplanned (due to the recent battleship sortie) and has been more than detrimental to her condition.  Her flotation now sits at 95% and set to be lost next turn.  In her last act her crew identifies a mine field and deal with a couple of mines (might I add that the mine disposal was carried correctly – not by using the ship to explode the mine – at least she will go down with some dignity).

The fall of Bataan leaves only a few bases in the Philippines to mop up and plenty of troops to deploy in other theatres of the war.  A nice position to be in but one that I suspect is going to take me that much closer to Todd’s line in the sand and a defensive line that will be harder to crack.

British must withdraw 1 battleship and 2 destroyers.  He has so many warships around that I’m sure this shouldn’t be a problem for Todd.  Something tells me Prince of Wales is not the one making the trek back home.

Screenshot attached of current air and naval situation after almost 3 full months of game play.

On my side of the ledger AK loses are good but APs have moved on up although on average it works out at about a bit over 1 ship lost each week which doesn’t sound quite so bad.  Cruiser count is good and would have been better if Kumano had not been thrown away.

Plane loses are mainly down to ops loses (or Maj. O P Loses as promoted by Todd) but against that air to air is ok considering that a lot of the planes were pulled out of harms way.  I have only just started to find the AVG and in China so I think Todd is testing the water to see what reaction he gets.  So far it has been good for me with the AVG group in Homan being mauled.

Steve,
Op's losses can be minimised, but in the early stages of the war you'll be moving planes around and this is when loads of losses occur. Try to move during good weather, stand down in bad (I should take my own advice here - but I need them in the fray 24/7), when transfering - try to use smaller hops. Don't overcrowd airbases ... etc.

Looks like some alright stats for this stage though.

Thanks Damian.

This is good to hear and I like the advice on good and bad weather (yet another aspect of the game to get a handle on). Small hops is good to and I'm guilty of sending them in one large jump.

Overcrowded bases I'm good with as I make a habit of keeping plane numbers within support limits. Mandalay is the only current example where I haven't followed this because I wanted a fighter presence there (paid the price as most planes are now damaged) and an appropriate support unit is making a mad dash there to get these planes back in the air. Their presence seems to have had the desired effect as the bombing of Mandalay has stopped for the time being at least.

I’ve gone through all the ships that sustained damage during February 1942 (and did not subsequently sink) and listed the initial damage and status of damage at the end of the month.  3 destroyers there with substantial damage and as long as they make it to a repair port they will be back in action.  Fuso will survive and is due for an AA upgrade into port she goes for repair and refit.  Yamashiro is already at the Home Island for her upgrade.

For me, the total of ops losses is irrelevant in isolation.  I gauge how well I am keeping them down by expressing them as a percentage of sorties flown.

When moving aircraft, several small hops may not be better than one big one.  For any given movement, a series of small hops will expose the group being transferred to multiple ops loss checks rather than the single check for the big hop.  I use big hops extensively, but I only do so when the weather favours it, and when the group's fatigue is minimal (preferably 0).  This involves resting the group for several days between each big hop.  Avoidance of small airfields probably also helps.

Notwithstanding that my total sorties have again overtaken those of my Allied opponent, these measures appear to have helped in keeping my ops losses lower than his: currently 1687 Allied : 1496 Japanese in March 1943.

Local Yokel, I'd agree with you in the fatigue and weather stakes, have you also noticed less ops losses if you set them to "stand down" before moving ? I swear it seems better... Also I agree, the size of the airfield seems to improve things. I tend to shuffle units in a type of zone of operations anyway, so I'm never flying too far... I hope.

Good gracious Local Yokel.  Now you have me thinking.  If I have this right I have up till now (01.03.1942) lost 325 planes from 251 500 sorties which equates to a percentage of .13% planes lost.  That sounds good.  0 fatigue – that is one area I can improve in.

Now for the real cruncher.  I’ve never really kept tabs on total number of Japanese sorties versus Allied sorties.  325 to the Allied 68 lost from ops.  Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do!

Thanks for the stand down info Damian.

PS… if the calculations don’t make sense it is my poor maths at school coming back to haunt me.

Progress continues on all fronts.  Below is a list of bases captured during the month of February 1942.

Malaya
Captured – Johore Bahru, Singapore

DEI
Captured – Samarinda, Aitape, Torokina, Hollandia, Balikpapan, Siador, Banjarmasin, Biak
Occupied – Belitung Island

China
Captured – Kweilin, Hengchow

Philippines
Captured – Clark Field, Naga, Manila, Roxas, Bataan, Ormoc
Occupied – Boac

South East Pacific
Captured – Green Island, Arawe, Woodlark Island, Sarmi, Admiralty Islands, Emirau Island
Occupied – Fergusson Island

Things that could have been done better
2nd phase of the Battle of Goodenough Bay.  By allowing my covering cruiser force to sally forth into the Coral Sea I gave up the opportunity for a night action and allowed my transports and light escorts plus cripples from the previous night to be exposed to superior forces.
Failing to provide adequate air cover which exposed Kumano and her sister ships to aerial assault and the eventual loss of Kumano.
Not getting Wake Island up to speed earlier and leaving it exposed to attack which through bluff never eventuated.

Things that worked
Securing Malaya, the important areas of the Philippines and the entrapment and capture of 6 Chinese units at Hengchow.
1st phase of the Battle of Goodenough Bay where Mutsu and company, although taking a battering, did their job and protected the transports.  The composition of the task force could have been better which probably contributed to the loss of 2 light cruisers but on the other hand the cruiser HMAS Australia was sunk.

Things have taken a turn for the worst for my Zeros in China.  FO R. Grant of AVG/B is credited with kill # 3.  While at the Java Sea things are set for an invasion at Soerabaja.  I was initially planning on landing at Batavia but recon has found 8 units at Batavia so Soerabaja it is and the troops will then work their way up to Batavia.  Reinforcements are not far from Taung Gyi so the assault proper will soon recommence there.

Mini KB is doing well in the Java Sea but tomorrow’s action will be all the more difficult.  The invasion convoy approaches and the close proximity of so much shipping to the T.IVa will likely produce some unwanted results.  An overnight bombardment force should hit the target overnight so hopefully that will reduce the effectiveness of strikes against my ships.

The calculation looks good to me - the Japanese equivalent in my own game is just over .10%. I certainly agree about standing units down; that's how I arrange for airgroups' recuperation for big hops. Ideally you want to make the last big hop into a base that's not under air threat - that way you can rest up the group and make a final short range transfer into its intended operational destination with minimum fatigue. This should put the group in the best possible condition for operations immediately upon arrival.

I'm not sure how far the version you are playing differs from the CHS NikMod game I'm playing, but I noticed that all three of your IJN base forces at Wake have no assault value. You've probably already anticipated this in your planning, but it looks like these base forces could still be filled out with 40 infantry squads and a brace of 5.5" CD guns. Filling these base forces to maximum establishment/TOE whilst they are still in Japan is another thing I take some pains over. At the same time they can do some engineering work in the Home Islands.

Incidentally, I do like the format for your AAR. The colour coding and the comments help to make it very readable - thanks!

Thanks Local Yokel.  Focusing on the percentage of ops losses rather than the figure of what has been lost sure puts things into perspective.  I’m starting to get used to the stand down command and am using it now whereas when I started it was one of those commands I wondered what it would do.  I have a better understanding of the importance of and usefulness of this command now.

Thanks for the tip on filling out those IJN base forces.  I’m sure I’ve seen that somewhere (probably more than once) and of course have forgotten that this will improve their value as a fighting force.  Being my first PBEM everything is part of the learning curve.  Consider filling out of forces added to the pile of information I must remember.

And thanks for the AA compliment.  Much appreciated.

The invasion of Soerabaja is imminent and I expect the pace to move up a notch or two tomorrow.  The Zeros on mini KB had an off day today with 4 being destroyed.  Attack by PT boats is my main concern – there have been plenty of sightings of them… oh and also how many mines have been dropped around Soerabaja????

Well the invasion is on and the reception has been hot.  Although heavy damage on a few of the transports the Imperial Guards are ashore and ready to go.  The PT threat appears to have been nullified, the aerial threat hasn’t made go on the damage achieved by the shore batteries and so far no minefields detected.  Tomorrow will see a shock assault here and the full extent of defensive preparations will be revealed.

Hmm -- it's been a long time since I've seen CD fire be that effective. Did your opponent move in any extra guns?

The Imperial Guards have achieved at good start at Soerabaja.  The injection of fresh troops will assist here and a day of bombardment will take place before the next push on the day after.

Capt. Harlock.  The 6th Coastal Gun Battalion is in place at Soerabaja and is doing a very good job of lobbing 150mm shells into the invasion fleet.  With the damage caused I expect to loose a few more transports, particularly as they are the 1500 variety and I imagine it would not take too much to bring them undone.  Importantly though they have put the Imperial Guards ashore to do their work.  The amount of fire coming from the Battalion seems to have reduced somewhat… is this a result of having troops ashore causing their fire to be less devastating.  Plenty more troops on the way here so I am hoping for a quick result so I can get those damaged ships into the level 8 port here.

A reasonably quiet day whilst the troops are preparing for the onslaught tomorrow.  The transports have started to sink but this is to be expected considering the damage inflicted by the shore battery at Soerabaja.  On the plus side at Soerabaja there does not appear to be a minefield to deal with at this location and the PT attacks have failed to fire.  The CAP over Sian was long overdue considering the bombers have been paying regular unescorted visits.  I’m a bit surprised that only 1 plane was downed.

Finally have Taung Gyi secured and now the problem of dealing with those Burma Rifles who have fled to the safety of the jungle.  Soerabaja looks to need one more push for it to fall and the conquest of the Spice Islands can gather pace.

Soerabaja is secure although I paid for it with 5 small transports.  Now is the time to get those damaged ships into port and see what can be saved.  The retreat of the Dutch forces went well as they chose to flee to Malang which means I can deal with them separately and they will not reinforce the units at Batavia.  I now have a size 8 port and size 4 airfield to base by DEI operations out of.  Supplies captured are 3495 and fuel is at 67 920.  Oil stored is 50 799 and resources are at 13 734.  There is no damage at all to the port, airfield or the runway.  Manpower is at (1)x1, resources at (0)x600 and oil at (0)x100 – this is an excellent result.
