I found I wasn't in the mood for plowing through "Dreadnought", so I took it back to the library.  I need something lighter to enjoy while at the pool or sitting in the sun on the back deck.  I've started Harry Turtledove's "How Few Remain", an alternative history story of the second war between the states.  It starts a series of books that follow this alternative history timeline through WWI and then WWII.  I've read this first one in the past and enjoyed it, but I'm gathering all of the books in the series to carry me through the summertime.

I like Harry's alternative series. You need to read the whole lot which runs from after the alternative CW which the south wins through WWII.

I liked Guns of the South. After that my interest fell off.

I have a list of the titles in the entire series in my notes from our PBEM game. Yes, I can be that anal.

Wasn't that "93 squared" ?

Just watched the movie again with the family last week, but can't figure the right code to type a superscript.

That one was good, but it's actually not part of this alternate history. This timeline starts with Confederate soldiers finding all of Lee's ANV disposition orders, not Union troops, before the historical battle of Antietam. Without "inside information", McClellan is paralyzed as normal, and Lee wins a large enough victory that Lincoln cannot issue the Emancipation, and England and France officially recognize the CSA.

That is the preface. The Second War Between the States takes place in 1881.

I'm a sucker for alternative history.

Any of you ever read "Pastwatch:  The Redemption of Christopher Columbus", by Orsen Scott Card?  Great book!  I re-read it about every other year.

That was the least appealing to me. Didn't really join to the series as the premise of the South's victory changed in the later books.

It's a convenient file on my laptop that I have open most days. I sure hope our PBEM doesn't get too "alternative", as I really want the Allies to win.

There are a lot of alternative histories, and I like most of them (as I do SciFi). I particularly like Conroy. Turtledove is surley the most prolific.

I should write a novell where Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) isn't burn't by french clergy according to the will of the english power of XVe century !! That would be a nice alternative history

Would it? If you don't burn "the maid of Orleans", will France ever truly unify? Or will it continue as half French/half English?

You lot need to be more Churchillian in your restraint. There were many jokes about DeGaulle fancying himself to be Joan reincarnated, and memebers of the joint chiefs who felt that Churchill needed to burn him at the stake "just in case".

He's he was brilliant, and made sure that he told everyone about it! Incessently!
Why is it that every army seems to have at least one brilliant blowhard?

May be parted in three: english part; french part; burgundy part.
I would still leave in the french part....

Of course, if nobody admit it in public, he had to make it know by himself
