The Setting

Due to some discovered issues with an older version of this scenario, Joe and I were unable to continue our prior AAR after our epic "Battle of Santa Cruz" re-creation. (Not being able to release Allied troops from the rear area made continuing pointless since Joe was essentially going defensive at that point)

So....that said, we are restarting with a new and improved version of the scenario. Bonus for Joe....this time he gets to play Allies....a rare treat for him.

The Plan

Imperial GHQ has issued new orders for the strip at Guadalcanal, previously building at a lackadaisy pace, to be stepped up in anticipation of new offensive measures against the Fiji Islands and possible New Caladonea. The goal being to further isolate Australia from the United States. Apparantly there was a minor setback about two months ago in the Central Pacific, but we've been told there's nothing to worry about.

Meanwhile Hori Force is to proceed with the capture of Port Morosby, supported by 11th Air Fleet based at Rabaul. An advance aerial outpost at Lae has been established, a small fighter strip currently sporting a detachment of crack Tainan pilots. Due to pressing concerns elsewhere, Destroyer strength is at an alltime low for Eighth Fleet, with only 1 old DD based at Rabaul (+ another at Combined Fleet's primary forward base at Truk) However on the debit side Eighth Fleet has Admiral Mikawa's powerful force of heavy cruisers sitting at Kavieng harbor + Chokai at Rabaul along with three elderly light cruisers. More than enough firepower to handle any forseen Allied interference in the area.

We plan to be in Brisbane by Sunday.

Good luck Nik, thanks and looking forward to reading the progress. Hopefully I'll be playing this game myself before you get too many turns posted..

In more mundane news.......fuel and supply are being loaded at Truk. Destination: Rabaul, which serves as the central supply hub for the Solomons and New Gunieau

The TF that has already left contains a naval construction battalion, destination Buin. A primitive strip exists there for emergency landings. We wish to expand it.

Hey Nick, nice to see you play the bad guys now :)

Something that came up in Joe's former AAR was the Japanese side's managing of fuel. Seemed to me that the Japanese player could only expect to do a couple of historical great ops, or maintain the historical Tokyo Express rate, but couldn't do both at the same time, hampering severely his ability to respond, while he has to deal both with the Solomons AND the New-Guinea areas of operations. Did you allow for a little more fuel in this upgraded version? Could you give us your feeling about this? (knowing the US player is on very short supply too anyway)

Thanks!

Fuel (and supply) are tight in the game, but not as tight as the IJN manned by Joe tends to come off as Here's why. Joe is the kind of player who wants all his ducks in a row in order to support maximum efforts with maximum chance of success. As he has related in campaign PBEMs, similar to what Mogami does.....if he's going to operate in an area, he first makes sure he has plenty of fuel and supply prior to comencing ops. As such this scenario tends to throw him into a tizzy. Having played the good guys myself several times (vs. several opponents) I can say that the fuel situation for me, being far less organized (not to mention less thorough) has been far less "crippling" than it has been for Joe. In fact, going back to Guadmod days, Joe was pretty convinced I couldn't operate the IJN anymore than he did. Then i took the IJN side and showed him that in fact it could be done.

The one thing you absolutely CANT do, unlike stock or AE campaign, is sortie the bulk of your fleet, particularily the heavies (battleships in particular) every single time and have them linger. Like the real life Japanese, if your going to "surge" as i call it, you do have to do what Joe did and horde fuel and minimize ops. But as the last AAR showed, that comes with it's own set of problems......if you leave the Allied player in peace too long, he's just going to build Verdun on your butt.

This isn't to say that i don't continue to make adjustments....especially when new builds keep coming out that change things, but overall i've been happy with how the constraints have panned out. Several builds back i did increase the starting fuel at Rabaul to assist Express runs a bit.

Lunga

Somebody has been hitting the Sake bottle too much. Rabaul HQ is getting frantic radio signals from Lunga and our garrison on Tulagi reporting many enemy vessels bombarding the crap out of them...with TROOPS coming ashore? What kind of nonsense is this? Further, reports indicate that many planes are bombarding our forces there. NONSENSE.

Our plan remains unchanged despite this panic mongering. Eighth Fleet has concentrated NE of Rabaul and will "investigate" this matter and eliminate any American intrusions.

New Guneau

After some heated arguments at Base AF HQ.....it has been decided not to pre-empt our efforts against the stubborn Australian position in front of Port Morosby despite the efforts of our ever victorious ground troops. (Hey Lunga base....did you here that? EVER VICTORIOUS. hint hint.....or ELSE)

General Hori has insisted on the continuance of air support as vital to his breaking of the enemy position which is being stubbornly held by fanatical troops who refuse to be beaten. Given the distance to Lunga and the possible presence of enemy airpower, we will not yet commit the 4th Ku to anti shipping strikes, but the Army must succeed in breaking through the 30th Brigade's positions within 48 hours or continued air cover cannot be guranteed.

In other news, enemy shipping detected at Milne Bay. We have no available assets to interdict at the moment but submarines have been dispatched both from Rabaul and Truk to hunt shipping in the lower Solomons area and MB.

Brisbane date may have be pushed back to next Wed.

Vice Admiral Mikawa knows his Sh*t. He will sort out this matter in no time flat.

Bye bye Yankee dog.

Very glad to see another go at this scenario. The first AAR was enjoyable and instructive, and seeing the differences in how it plays out this run will be interesting indeed.

I'm about convinced this will be the first scenario I fire up when AE arrives.

New Guneau

Whew! Those Aussies just don't know when to acknowledge that it's time to hang up the boomerang and just head to the nearest Outback Steakhouse. But after two more days of intensive fighting, the battered 30th Brigade is pushed back 40 miles to the gates of PM itself with heavy losses in men and equipment. The ever victorious IJA is in pursuit. The navy may have helped.......a little.

We've lost contact with Admiral Mikawa for some strange reason. I'm sure the news will be good when we re-establish contact. We are anxious for news.

I am guessing that is a mixed blessing. Have to ask: did the 1000 lb SAB penetrate the armor of the CA's?

Hmm.....probably an update in the general OOB. However the scenario's "birth" spans back to last year so there've been alot of changes. Sometimes a manual change is required since the scenario 'start' not at 12/7/41 but later in the game.

New Guneau

Hori Force continues to push forward in pursuit of the routed Aussies. They are now being hit heavily from the air. All of Tainen's efforts to thwart the Allied air assaults have failed and attrition has whittled them down to nothing. Hori will have to push on without air cover while Base AirForce decides what to do. It's bomber strength has been doubled with the arrival of another Datai of G4M1 bombers but we only have 20+ long range Zeros to escort them. There is also the problem now of Lunga which "appears" to have been captured by a strong American amphibious force. What to do. Hell if i know. We can't be in two places at once. It also appears that Admiral Mikawa has failed in his task. It also doesn't look like he's going to show back up either for the well deserved slap to the face for his failure. (Guess there will be no Force death strangle scene with heavy mechanical breathing sound)

Eighth Fleet has been thoroughly defanged. We must now wait for Combined Fleet reinforcements to arrive including Kido Butai. Our last trump card is Sixth Fleet and it's submarines, now reaching deployment positions. We pray for a fat juicy carrier to come into our periscopes.

So this amazingly accurate mod starts off with errors?
