You meet death. And in the void you are told that because you spent an entire lifetime playing wargames sending people into brutal combat, watching movies of people killing each other and reading war related material, that now it is your turn to fill in the ranks and join a war for your next life. You must choose an era and army to become a private soldier of lowest rank in, and it must be involved in a hot war with moderate odds of you becoming a casualty. If you choose a cozy war like the Gulf War of 1991, then you'll just get shoved into something like a Roman soldier ending up in Cannae, a Jewish rebel who ends up in Masada or a German in the Stalingrad kettle. For a more pleasant example, being a Hunnic warrior under Attila would qualify. They also add that your knowledge of history will not go with you into the next life.

So what era and army do you join?

I think I already answered that with my alternative to death by flamethrower...

Any regiment of foot in the early 18th century will do, though I'm a bit partial to the 1704 Bavarians. I'd probably die in the horrible melee of the Schellenberg, or later at Blenheim, in a series of ultimately inconclusive attacks and counter-attacks. If I do survive, I do get to go to Flanders, and then probably die of disease on garrison duty or during a siege.
I'd get to die in a uniform I think is really neat, for a country I feel at least a bit of attachment to (technically, I'm Hessian, and it's an image I often enjoy, but I'm also half-Bavarian), and for a cause, and in circumstances that'll make sure future generations won't have to suffer my great-grandchildren bragging about it on facebook. ;)
(That's why Prussians in general, or the Swedes at Poltava, or even the allied foot at the Schellenberg, are out of the question.)

One of Napoleon's Hussars I think. You just have to love that dolman and pelisse combo; and if I'm going to be brutally slaughtered it can happen when I'm looking good.

This is an interesting question. If you had to chose the lesser of evils what would it be? That's tough to answer. I just hope I never have to face a choice like that. But if I were forced to make a choice it might be with one of the Western Allied armies in Europe during World War II. Definitely not the Eastern Front.

A US Marine on Okinawa 1945. More specifically, a mortarman with K/3/5, fighting alongside Eugene Sledge "with the Old Breed".

If I really want to experience the terror of battle, face long odds, and be scared absolutely senseless, I could choose these:

1) With Alpha Company, First Battalion, 7th Cavalry at LZ X-Ray, Battle of Ia Drang Valley, South Vietnam, November 14, 1965.

2) With the 1st Marine Raider Battalion at the Battle of Bloody Ridge, Guadalcanal, September 12-14, 1942.

3) Part of the opposing forces in either of these two engagements.

Well, if being in a Navy counts, I would choose either side for the Battle of Jutland.
If not, I think I would like to be in Chesty Puller's outfit. (US Marines for those that don't know chesty)
