18/2/43

Our men are gathered around the steps of the briefing room.
Its just after 9 -and there are still a few sore heads.
Fortunately for them, its 85th's CAP day.

'Now there is a strange sight ' notes Iwaya "I do believe thats Vice Admiral Moizumi -and if you look carefully gentlemen -he's jogging"
"Jogging!" half a dozen voices reply -and there is a small stir of chairs as heads crane for a look
Iwaya is right -the Vice IS jogging - from the radio shack towards 8th Area HQ
"Wonder whats got the navy so excited?"
Hyakutake assumes a very military voice " Immediate. All battleships are the wrong shade of grey. They must be changed to a different shade of grey by 1900 hours on pain of removal of triple rations"
"probably"
"yep, probably"

The Vice disapears into the bunker that serves as the HQ for the 8th area command -but does not reappear for some time
By then, he has been forgotten -its 47th turn for CAP
A dozen sorry arses drag themselves to work -another boring day in the pacific.

"ALL COMMAND IMMEDIATE
ENEMY FORCES CONSISTING OF BATTLESHIPS, CARRIERS AND MANY TRANSPORTS 120 MILES SOUTH OF MIRI ISLAND
4 TH FLEET WILL THROW ALL ENEMY FORCES BACK INTO THE SEA

ALL COMMANDS IMMEDIATE
4TH FLEET BOMBERS HAVE SUNK 2 BATTLESHIPS, 3 CRUISERS
ALL COMMANDS TO INCREASE NAVAL AIR SEARCH TO MAXIMUM

TO SOUTH EAST FLEET COMMAND
EXECUTE OPERATION RIPE HARVEST

Nakamura leans over the map -the damn light in this bunker, too many shadows
"What do you think Admmiral?"
The Vice scratches his head. Considers again the signals in front of him.
'I just hope South east Fleet does not panic. I don't believe the reports either. And something else. No fleet CVs reported."
He looks Nakamura steadily in the eye
'I still think we are going to be very, very busy, very, very soon"

The men awaken to grey skies, low cloud, steady rain
And thus it stays that way all day -a few transports struggle in -the catalina snoops about.
The men play cards, sit around -and wait.

The radio -especially tokyo rose is strangely quiet.
Its a normal day, and there is no clue on the great battle for majuro island -so many miles away, being fought to the death.

(cantona -do not read until you have played turns ! -will spoil turn!)

Although the sun manages to break through the clouds in the morning , Lae will again be subjected to rolling monsoonal clouds - in the afternoon it becomes hard to tell what is rain, and what is rain from the storms.
nevertheless, the war continues. In the morning Hyakutake, Juni and Iwaya mangae to lead their sections aloft for CAP - a fruitless exercise - they never even sight the daily catalina probe.

Madang to the north is bombed -rather desolutory.
Dobodura chases away a handful of bombers

Its after lunch that things happen

LCDR Kuritaki -leader of F/2 zero unit, calls his men.
The departure of the navy fighters occurs with little fuss -bad weather or not -they go.
They cannot hide their excitement -'No bombers flying in the high heavens for us -proper opponents at last"

there is little doubt where they are going.
Tokyo rose has broken her silence -the war has exploded in the gilberts.

Our men watch the departure -they return the salute.
"Majuro hey? ' notes Iwaya , what a hole that was"
"Yes, I don't pity them -seems to be such a waste to fight over such a crap hole"

The zeros depart into the grey -and all breathe a sigh of relief as they all get away from the muddy morass the field is becoming
"I wonder what the Navy is doing about it" Hyakutake ponders as they begin to seek shelter from the renewed rain
"jack all I reckon" almost spits Miyasaki'
"havent you a brother on the Yamato? -Inoue frowns - something in his voice not quite level
"Yes -and like all things navy -he's a bloody peacock"
"Peacock?"
"Peacock - all bloody show, and no go. The navy wouldn't know not to piss into the wind in......."

Juni's blow is swift, decisive. Another is not needed.
"piss on that friend"

extract from Shattering the sword - a Cantona production

The mobile fleet we now know, had spent December, and a good deal of January in home waters –refitting, upgrading her dive bomber squadrons.
Then, mid January , had come ‘the northern Flap” –high command had become convinced that an invasion of parishimo was imminent.
A fruitless week in terrible weather had followed –before common sense finally prevailed.

But instead of a return to Japan, where new TBD’s were now being produced, combined fleet had succumbed to the pressure being shown by the Allies –the fleet simply had to get closer to the front.

On the 12/2/43, nearly the entire strength of the imperial navy gathered at siapan, and a conference, so fateful for the month ahead, took place.
Enemy CVs at Lunganville –and definitely Cvs at Pearl.
Gilberts being bombed daily, the creeping atoll by atoll advance.
Majuro under enemy fighter range.

The invasion, it was felt, would come from pearl –would sail somewhere near baker island –and come in from the east.
Combined fleet then –would sail –and attempt to meet it somewhere in the wastes to the east of Majuro.
At the least, the carriers Junyo and Hiyo –leading the fleet by some 120 miles, might catch a convoy.
CVL Ryujo would “trail her arse” near the solomons –and see what she could flush out.
This was the plan
Naturally, nothing like it , eventuated…………….

We need to backtrack a couple of days…………

18/2/43

Dawn, 120 miles north east of Kwalajien, the bridge of the Akagi.
Captain Hara once again is standing legs akimbo, the rock in the middle of the crowded bridge.
He has glasses to his eyes, and is watching events 500 metres to his port, watching with considerable interest.
The seas, the weather, is terrible. Great rolling, foaming capped swell, brocken by streaks of foam. 40 knots of wind –maybe more.
The great bulk of Akagi creaks and groans as she rides up, and crashes down –the spray –no more than that –the solid sheets of water crash over her bow, fly down her flight deck.

The skies are grey –clouds at less than 1000 feet –and showers scatter the horizon.
‘And I thought the tropics were meant to be pacific’ he mutters to himself. This is crud.

If Akagi is struggling into this sea, then CV Juni is a veritable roller coaster – and for the destroyer attempting to pass the line to her, trying to avoid getting smashed under great bulk, is rapidly becoming a nightmare.

Hara’s XO smiles ‘What ever happens, Yamaguchi is going to get a wet arse trying to get back here”
Akagi shudders ‘If he gets back at all – thank the Gods we refueled last night”

For 15 minutes they watch the brave efforts to get the jackstay line across –it is a futile exercise.
Yamaguchi is trapped -for the moment, on 2nd mobile fleets flagship.

Silence on the bridge – brocken only by the creaking, groaning, the pounding crash of the seas, the beat, beat of the wipers vainly trying to clear the screens.
“Signal from Kwaljien sir!”

HAVE SIGHTED LARGE NUMBERS OF BATTLESHIPS, A CARRIER, MANY TRANSPORTS 120 MILES SOUTH MAJURO ATOLL.
I AM ATTACKING

The second signal follows hard, only minutes later

TO VICE ADMIRAL YAMADA
TAKE COMMAND OF MOBILE FLEET
I WILL CONFORM
RECOMMEND WE MOVE TO POSITION @#$, @#$$!

Captain Hara looks out at the grey, grey sea.
An attack in this weather?
They were going to have to fight in this?
Crap –this could be worse than rolling dice
VADM Yamada looks grim as he enters the bridge –crowding it even further.
‘Your plans Sir?”
That’s easy Captain. We sneak up on the baka’s, let em commit, then, weather bloody permitting –smash them”

19/2/43

0500 hours
And still the weather plays havoc –still great storms and low rain are scattered through out the Gilberts
The wind has not lessoned, and still whistles down the decks, forcing the men to bend into it.
Nevertheless, Akagi’s hanger deck is loaded –a full strike , fuelled, armed, her decks are loaded with CAP ready to go. Nearly 40 float planes are aloft –and 20 odd bombers from Kwaljien are adding to the search, they have seen some of these, kawaljien is only 30 miles or so away.

2 battleships, and a cruiser have been reported struck by Kwaljien yesterday –but this has definitely not detired the enemy –now, as the sky breaks into a dull grey, the reports are flowing in.

‘Enemy troops landing, many transports Majuro’
‘Enemy troops, transports Jaluit’
‘Enemy carrier, Majuro’ (but what type!)
“enemy battleship –type unknown –“
‘Yorktown class CV – position #$#@/^%$# - 400 miles away –damn –too far

The reports keep coming
And all Captain Hara can do is read them – the seas are simply too rough –he cannot launch –fighters yes – bombers –bombers would be suicide.

0700
CAP is established, somehow they have got away.
Still the reports come in –it is a nerve wracking experience –floating bombs – needing to strike, wanting to strike, un able to strike.
And then a destroyer, way out on the flank, begins to fire.
Enemy strike!
The Cap pounces –and the strike – if you could call it that –never even sights the carriers –destroyed.

0917
“Kwaljien reports attacking the Yorktown sir”
Good –atolls are not subjected to this crud
“Read it please”
HAVE ATTACKED YORKTOWN CLASS CV 120 MILES SOUTH MAJURO ISLAND. ONE TORP HIT CONFIRMED. 1 BB ATTACKED, NIL RESULTS.

Captain Hara and Yamada gather around the ridiculously small chart table
“can we reach her?” every bone in his body says attack.
Yamada looks up –looks at yet another great wave slamming into the bow.
“We have lost 4 fighters already to this –can you imagine trying to spot a strike , recovering it in this?”
As hard as it was, Hara must agree. “What then?”
“The plan stays the same –how do you reckon any invasion is going to cope with this?”
The old man smiles –and a hidden youth shows “ Ten to one Yamaguchi disagrees with me”

He is right.
Noon sees Yamaguchi – CV Juni, Hiyo, Zuiho, Shoho and Rihuio - maneuvering in the lee of Kwaljien itself –and although it increases the range, it’s a clever tactic –the seas are calm enough here.
26 kate, 30 judy strike at majuro –and the CVE Sangomon is a helpless target –laterally pounded into the deep.

Dusk brings even greater news
The marines message intercepted is short
“Am unable to establish sufficient bridgehead. Casualties heavy. Send help.”

And Mobile fleet slips into the night –still undiscovered.

Weather- clearing.

Dawn
47th Sentai has been stood down.
However our men are gathered at the steps of the briefing hut, expectant.

I t doesn’t take many brains to tell that something is up.
Nakamura comes past the canvas chairs, hurrying towards the HQ bunker .
Momentarily he pauses
“Miyasaki?’ –that’s a nasty black eye my friend –what the hell happened?”
“Smacked the canopy …………………Sir”
Nakamura’s eyes dart briefly around the lounging pilots
“Trying a few Naval maneuvers perhaps?”
“Perhaps sir”
The commander smiles –there is a twinkle in it “ Good –its good to realize we are all on the SAME TEAM”
He breaks away, disappears into the bunker

Hyakutake turns to Iwaya
“We are moving again”
‘How so?”
“watch –watch and learn.”
Inoue joins the conversation, his magazine falling to the ground –‘I think you are right my clownish friend –look –there goes the base officer –towards the fuelling team”
“And here comes the met” – as yet another officer disappears into the Bunker

Silence for a few minutes as the men track various characters in and out of the bunkers door
‘Ah crap,” sighs Iwaya –“ theres the transport pilots. This time I wont forget my tooth brush”
He has barely risen from his chair when Nakamura appears from the bunker.
His face is grim –and all fall silent, and very serious as he approaches.

“I wont %$#@ about with this. We are moving…………...
Now” he gathers himself. “There is a tremendous battle occurring in the area of majuro –and the fleet has been hit hard.
Its Kwaljien again men.”
“Sunny climes boys!” Hyakutake gleefully exclaims
“Yes –sunny climes –but first we have to get there.”
Something in his tone turns Inoue’s blood to ice
“High command has ordered 47th immediate –to Truk”

Truk? –how in the hell were they going to get to TRUK!

0900
47th, and 85th sentai are idling at the end of the strip
Around them dozens and dozens of men are actually still topping up tanks in the last 2 planes –Nakamura will not depart until every possible drop of fuel can be loaded
The transports have departed, and the good shepherds –3 Irvings are rolling into position ahead of the packed fighters.

Inoue once again scans his gauges.
There can be nothing wrong. Nothing. So many miles –so many over the ocean
TRUK
God – this is a nightmare

The sentai departs –and all in the base wave them away, 72 fighters.
Lae seems terribly quiet once they are gone.

Hyakutake looks left, looks right.
His friends are there around him, Nakamura ahead. There will be no silly crap this flight –Truk isn’t just at the extreme of their range –its beyond it
Yet again he adjusts the trim, another microscopic adjustment of the fuel/air mix.
Even without ammo (flying with out ammo –hell!) his bird is heavy
But it will get lighter…………..

North of Kavieg they lose one man –a sudden spurt of black smoke from the cowling, the sickening shuddering stop of the propeller –and a lone shape gliding lower, and lower towards the wide, endless ocean.
There is nothing to be done –grit your teeth –and fly on

He is the only man they lose.
The winds are good.
The weather is fine –and somehow, some how – with all on Bingo fuel, all at the very limit of endurance (it seems) 71 fighters arrive at Truk as the sun begins to settle into the sea.

For a few minutes Nakamura sits quietly in his cockpit once the great engine stops.
He doesn’t want to look at the fuel gauge ……….
Feeling like he has to physically detach himself from the plane –unstick himself from the seat, he wearily pulls the canopy back.
“And to think I swore never again” he mutters to himself.

Truk is Busy – he can see 30 Odd GM bombers on the edge of the field –and many appear holed and damaged.
A squadron of the big 4 engined naval bombers also is parked –and men are swarming about them.
‘Busy indeed” he thinks.

The mess –still the same as last time, is eerily quiet.
The pilots sip their tea quietly – and a single glance tells why
The bomber pilots –those disdained navy men –are gathered in a corner –and too a man –all are asleep.
You don’t have to look too closely – but too many uniforms have the ugly brown stains of spilt blood on them…………..

Miyasaki approaches Nakamura. There is a sadness in his eyes.
“I must apologise” he nods towards the sleeping forms “ They helped sink a carrier – but they lost half their numbers”

0100
Captain Hara stands at his binnacle, his legs two trees of iron.
Every bone in his body aches –one’s body refuses to accept that it is of such a rank as captain, that captains never tire, never waver –and calls, and calls for sleep.
But there can be no sleep. Not now.
Sleep now –slip up now –and potentially sleep forever.

The bridge –as always, is quiet –only the passage of messengers slipping in and out –the movement of his navigator and his 2 junior assistants disturb it.

It is almost utterly dark – almost – the horizon is barely visible –a difference in the degree of blackness.
Akagi’s bridge continues to vibrate –her great engines pushing her hard due west now.
“ Aircraft status report sir, from the group commander”
He doesn’t need to look – earlier he has visited the hanger, talked to the pilots. Akagi’s spear still burns bright.

No –they would be ready. But what worried him was ahead. For at least 40 miles there was no horizon, just blackness. A storm front.
What would Yamada do?

Almost as Hara asks the question, a bustle at the rear. Yamada and Genda enter.
Yamada looks younger now – good –the battle will continue.
The Admiral speaks aloud into the dark –knowing full well that the whole ship will get the news through the grape vine in minutes “ We are coming south west as soon as we punch through that crud ahead –I intend to attack. Begin spotting as soon as you can”

0800
Akagis decks are empty.
The storm front now behind.
In the strengthening light Akagi leads the fleet - 6 fleet carriers, 6 DDs
Hara’s XO turns from watching the great strike head south “11 to 5, maybe 6. Looking good”
“Yes –but where the hell is Yamaguchi?” Hara demands
“Yes –why the hell did he go around the front? –it will take him 3 hours to join us now. Splitting fleets is bad Sir, very, very bad”
Akagi’s captain surveys the fleet. Not good. And no Battleships with us either. Raiding convoys with out those fuel hogs may have been a good idea then –but now –heavens, if they’d been available last night!

“ Enemy Formation –bearing 030! “ the voice rising in shock – “140 plus!”
Hara grabs his glasses –raises them. The raid covers the sky. By the Gods. So many!
Remain calm, above all remain calm. You are a captain of his Imperial navy, and now you get to show your skills as a ship driver.

Ok you Barsteds –bring it on
“Full ahead all!”
The bridge is too crowded. Crud this –I cannot see.
“EX –Im going to command from the roof – relay my orders please!. Helmsman – no hesitation . Everybody –helmets on!”
He pushes past the Admiral –That includes you too sir –somebody is bound to get banged up today”

It’s a grand sight from up on Akagis bridge roof –the sea –now calm –the sky, too clear. The breeze, and the guns seeking, seeking.
Hara follows the director – and suddenly he feels so calm. He is not here, its some one else –watching as if a great movie is about to play.

The raid is getting through –it was never going to be stopped…………..
“hard to port!”
Akagis guns begin to fire –rapidly, the 4.7’s barking, barking, now the 25’s begin hammering.
9 black shapes begin to shorten on him –aiming straight at him….

“Steady ex!”
His great ship is beginning to lean to stbd, crashing sideways into the sea, piling it up against her great steel flanks – bombs whistling down –men diving for cover –and he stands –exhaultant as the bombs hammer, ONE, TWO, THREE –alongside – great shocks, mountains of water alongside –spray in his face –he is wet, wet,
“Missed YOU TRUKERS!”
“ADMIDSHIPS!” –he has to scream the orders above the crashing of the guns – Akagi responds, destroyer like.

A bloom of an explosion on Shokaku –hurt ?

Hara glances sideways –the great boom, boom , boom of hits thunders across the water – Soryu –OH God –Soryu is a column of smoke and fire.
‘barsteds!”

“Bearing 220! SIR!”
Nine more bombers !

Wait, wait, -here they go- “FULL ASTERN ALL!” HARD TO STBD!”
Akagi shudders
From her great funnel a great shriek of steam adds to the bedlam –some poor stoker has lost control of his boiler pressure –the safeties blast steam –it curls over the flight deck.
Again the scream of the bombs –again the crash -again they miss
“FULL AHEAD ALL” – and tell ENGINES that the very beasts of hell are on our tails”

And then the guns fall silent,
For a minute Hara stands –he’s still alive, and Akagi lives.
And the rest of the fleet?
His heart almost freezes. Zuikaka burns. Soryu is stopped – a bright flame lights up her stern –the flames so bright he can hardly see the rest of her.
Hara groans – Kaga too burns –and he can see clearly part of an elevator rests upon her bridge front…………
And the nightmare is complete. Hiryu too is a column of destruction rising to the sky.

Suddenly all his years, the 2 sleepless nights stagger him.
He collapses –wearily sitting onto the hot steel.
‘Oh god, Oh god…………”

Suddenly the Admirals face pops up the ladder to the roof “ Sitting down on the job? hey –come on captain –this isn’t over yet. Good driving. Now get down here and help me win this battle”
On the bridge, as crowded as ever, Some one is bringing the reports in
“Soryu 5 bombs –many fires –am fighting them”
Zuikaku – One torpedo hit . Severe shock damage –unable to operate Aircraft”
Kaga – single hit –ammunition explosion forward – fires in hand
Hiryu – command dead –many fires. Am unable to control ship.”

“very good” replies the admiral –as if he’d just received an invite to the Emperor.
The admiral speaks aloud again.
‘gentlemen –Yamaguchi’s strike has rendezvoused successfully with ours. This is not over yet. Stand to your duties. We win this war –here –now, today. Or die trying.”

0947
The radio crackles –one can only imagine the battle

“Am attacking”
“get the big one!”
‘Look out –fighters!”
“Follow me!”
‘Am attacking”
“BANZIA!”
‘I strike!, I strike!”
“MOTHERRRRRRRRRRRRR”

“get the third one, get the third one!’
‘he’s finished!”

“Yorktown sighted!”
“Hornet sighted!”

“Genda to nest –Lexington, Saratoga sunk. Am coming home.’

Yamada smiles
“That’s still 7 against 2 men –plus our navy bombers.”
“Spot the second strike…………”

“Extract from Shattering the sword, a cantona production

Yamadas confidence for the afternoon was of course shattered.
The Allied Task force commander aggressively charged his fleet –maybe guessing that the Japanese lacked any surface strength – a surface engagement could still salvage victory from disaster.

The allied strike – Hornet and Yorktown caught Yamaguchi still launching – and although the CAP shredded the strike to just 2 bombers left –these incredibly brave men showed that courage alone can sometimes overcome all. Two bombers –2 bombs –and CV Hiyo joined the growing list of Japanese cripples.

Aggressive the attack may have been – but costly
Kwaljien now gets into the fray –and along with Yamaguchi’s strike –Hornet too is sent rapidly to the bottom.
Only the BB Mississipi taking the loins share of the attention , allows the Yorktown to find shelter in the storm front.

Dusk finds two shattered fleets.
Marines still stuck on the beaches at majuro – the 25th division and 150th regiment gaining at jaluit.
1 allied CV, a unknown number of CVE, a huge number of surface ships.
This is what Yamada faces at dusk
His carriers are ammunition exhausted
His land based air power all but expended.
5 burning cripples to attempt to salvage
3 Cv, 3cvl left

But at 1700, electrifying news
“Continue to attack Battle divisions 1, 2, 3, will arrive midnight.”

Another day
Mid morning
Inoue looks out of his cockpit at the length of the strip -waiting for the arriving flight to get down, to get clear.
47th is again lined up, awaiting to move.
Fatigue sits heavily in Inoues bones -and ahead is a journey that will be sheer murder.
There was no jocularity this morning, no wise cracks.
Grimness
Truk has , since dawn , been recieving aircraft from the great battle over majuroe, at first another shattered betty unit, but now -disturbingly, navy kates are coming in.
Inoue knows these planes -he has seen them before -navy carrier planes -.
So the rumours are true -the navy has been hurt.
But how badly?
No doubt, Inoue thinks, they would soon find out.
Strip finally clear of the pitiful numbers of kates landing, 47th taxi onto the strip -and with out fanfare, depart.

The attrition of 47th continues -only 33 will arive at ponape today.

47th approach a familiar sight -nesteled in the bright blue -thegreat atoll and lagoon of Kwaljien.
Many sights are familiar - the great bunkers are unchanged, the dirty white strip is still there, the tattered palms.
The hulks that provided the scotch so long ago, are still there -now the brown of rapidly spreading rust.

But the lagoon - ..........

Nakamura stares in disbelief at the black waters of the lagoon - great oil slicks cover its surface, staining her beaches in great ribbons of disaster.
Multi hued rainbows reflect the sun back up at them.

Nakamura leads his flight over the lagoon, circling, trying to take in the picture below.
Zuikakau is the oil culprit, she lays anchored -heavily down by the bows, and from there the oil still apparently streams.
Hiryu lies near to her - and she is a nightmare -her flightdeck looks as if some great ancient beast has chewed upon her.
And she is black, stained horribly black.
Soryu, her sister too -is black -a whole series of 6 foot holes have been stitched down her deck -they only hint at the carnage below
Little Hiyo leans crazily to port -it does not need a sailors eye to see that she is in great trouble.

And finally they pass over the great kaga -she is apparently getting underway - -how the captain expects to operate her is anyones guess -the front of her bridge is a shatterd skeleton of twisted metal.

"The barsteds" Juni intones , probably for all of them " The barsteds"

Nakamura brings them in.

Hyakutake supervises the refuelling of his plane
he doesn't need to -he really should be getting a meal, or trying to.
But here, here at his familiar plane, is, well, better
The stink of oil is thick in his nostrils
He can handle that.

but, but , ......

In the shelter of the palms, in the shade of the bunker, on the beaches, everywhere, they lie.
the burnt, the badly burnt. the unrecongnisable burnt.
They do not cry out, but the groans............

Kwaljien is a island of horror

A hand rests upon his shoulder -startling him.
Its Nakamura
'" My friend, its been a while since you scored. We are going to be busy. very, very Trucking busy. I need you, you and the experienced guys OK -Don't do anything stupid"

There is no accomodation
The food is basic
Our pilots are forced to refuel and re arm themselves
And it rains hard for most of the day.

But there are no complaints, no grumbling, just one glance at the lagoon -one sniff of the oil soaked stink of the air, is enough to bring fresh energy into bone weary limbs.

The Lagoon is filling fast.
For a brief period -a mere 12 hours, the undamaged carriers anchore , and they take all priority.
By dawn tomorrow they will be on patrol just outside, sheperds over crippled brothers.

Every single support man is involved today in recovering aircraft from the cripples - loading them onto barges, re assembling them, getting them away.
Transports begin to load the wounded.
A repair ship arrives - the Submarine guantlet run -she immediately gets down to work.

And all day the men dread the approach of the 4 engine bombers -but today the weather is on their side

Miyasaki banks his fighter once again as he completes yet another lap around the lagoon.

The flying is not just difficult, it is down right dangerous -the heavy weather continues to cross the island, at times lashing his cockpit into a surreal green and grey world -the rain drumming .
It is the final patrol -the sun is almost set -and the world is rapidly going grey, grey into black.

He turns again -time for home, and then, momentarily, he breaks into a clear patch.
It is a sight he will remember forever.
Silhouetted against a patch of red horizon -bows brightly creaming, a great line of battlewagons is steaming south.....

"My brother"

And then they are gone as he plunges into the next cloud, and the business of getting down safely consumes him.........

Mission - provide CAP to battlefleet at Kwaljien

Heavy weather again -only 16 sorties flown

Morale -superb

carriers operating in local vicinity struck at naval targets Jaluit

It is pitch dark in the bunker
Iwaya and Inoue have found a rough space to bunk into - the base is rapidly "getting sorted", and they both feel that maybe tomorrow - weather, enemy allowing, some sort of normality can occur.

At the moment, it is good enough to be dry, to be fed, to be able to sleep.
Except that sleep will not come
"I hear the Navy claims another battleship today" Iwaya's voice sounds hollow in the concrete cavern "how many is that now?"
In the dark, he can hear Inoue sit up, scratch around for a canteen
'A lot. not even Tokyo Rose can make up what has happened here"
'So you think its true?, that a great victory has been won?" is it possible ?, was there a chance they might, he might survive this war?
Inoue gives a wry laugh. It is the voice of reason, not blind hope that speaks softly. " if you are thinking that they will surrender -forget it. "
"Why?'
For a long time silence . A few shuffles. Others are listening to"the old man"
Inoue expounds into the dark. words, just words, but words others would never express. Words so much easier to express here in the dark
'I always wondered if Americans would fight over the Phillipines, or the British malaya's, for some foriegn land. I always thought that eventually, if we stuck to it -they'd give it up, we'd win."

The cavern is very dark, and very still

" But 5 carriers, 2 battleships -how many men?. How many flags in windows? Now? -now I think we have just made them very, very angry. Now i think - now i think they really have a reason to fight"

The silence, the dark returns

And then, firmly, angrily, Juni's voice pierces the dark
" Truk them -let em come"

SMN Miyasaki is happy at last
Tired -exhausted even -but happy.
The great guns have fired in anger -sowing disaster across the allied troops stranded on jaluit.
The great ship has engaged the enemy -a single DD to be sure -and truly announced her presence.
Yamato is returning to Kwaljien.
Yesterday, just on dusk, he'd caught sight of a single fighter, glinting in the sun, a spark against the dark shadows .
And for some reason his heart had leapt.

The enemy do come -at last.
47th sentai has been fighting the bomber for over a year now.
They are good at it. Used to it. They don't fear it.

Confident in their abilities and sheer numbers, they rise to the altitudes, ready to defend the crippled carriers and packed lagoon to the death.
Today -they totally cock it up.
The enemy come -just 6 PB4ys -but they come in low, and 47th swan around at altitude, oblivious to the attack below.
Only the frantic calls from 85th for help alert them - cursing Nakamura leads them down -too late.

They are lucky -the PB4Ys attack transports entering the lagoon -and miss.

There is no time for incriminations -47th refuel, and get back into the air.

A new unit has arrived -B6N2's - the new crack torpedoe bomber -and it has crack crews, men who have chaffed, and chaffed at a chance to prove themselves in this war.
Tonight they are exualtant - their bombers are swift, and lethal -and they have bought them back home.
The enemy on majuro try an attack again this day. It fails.
Night falls.
Kwaljien field works all night. The harbour is filled with shuttling barges to the warships and transports.
The allies are not leaving their beachheads.
A battle of wills, of attrition then
So be it.

super results for the empire so far herbs, you`ve earned a promotion!
hope that you can save as many CVs as possible. what is the state of air groups from the CVs? have you lost many elite pilots?
have you any offensive plans for your carriers? (if you can reveal it)

miricle occurs - computer fixed.
The unluckiest computer owner in the forums can continue

27/2/43

0400
predawn light, and already the atoll -focuss of all of Japans energy, is operating at full stretch.
Our men gather in a rough semi circle around Nakamura, waiting for the final briefing from the Met officer, who is currently giving the torpedoe bombers their last updates.
Eyes are tired, and bones are weary. But backs are straight.
The Zuikaku is away, kaga long gone.
Today hiryu, soryu will begin the great journey - gods willing.
Hiyo remains - and on her now all efforts are focussed - but the news is not good - they are losing the war against the rising waters.
Yamato and her consorts also lay at anchore -shorn of escorts.

Today the navy needs the Army fighters. Today 47th must take centre stage.

The met officer jogs over -his face flushed.
Behind them engines are bursting into life -men are shouting, dust is rising. the great machinery of war grinds on -sweeping 47th along with it.
"50/50 cloud -7000 to 10000 feet -scattered showers."
the met smiles -" cover enough for the carriers -rain enough to keep the bombers grounded, smooth enough seas to help the sailors"
he salutes, hurries away to the 85th sentai.
"Nakamura turns to them. "its our turn. let us not dishonour ourselves. To your planes"

Yesterday the met gets it right –and all that he predicted comes to pass –the bombers do not come, the carriers get away.
Today he gets it very , very right
“”brilliant flying weather I’m afraid –they will come”

They do

21 B17’s attack Kwaljien from Wake – a tight, tight formation – determined to avenge .
47th –driven by a far greater motivation –fear of failure, of dishonor –fling themselves at the enemy……….

“47th Attack!”

The bombers are below –15000 feet, and already 85th are amongst them – sharks slashing at the whales.
‘its been a while” murmers Hyakutake, “FOLLOW ME!”
Nakamura knife.
Hyakutake inverts,, picks his target, eases the stick into his belly, and dives, that great, great bellow and scream.
2000 metres
1000
500
400 –firing, firing, lips pursing as the tracers reaches out, reaches out –flashing into the cockpit, exploding –glimpse of shattered screens, and through, and pulling up, and pulling up, grunt, grunt, god, so, so $#@!%^& heavy –and there is no cry of exhualtation, just a savage satisfaction as the great bomber falls past –inverted, inverted, now spinning down, and down………..

Hyakutake makes ace

But already his flight is coming round, hard, hard on the tails of the bombers – and the return fire is thick, thick – and may as well not exist for all the deterrence it has –again they savagely scream in, howl in –guns chattering, chattering.

85th attack too – but the hatred is not there –the cold determination is not there –many are hit –many turn away
For 47th –many too are hit –none flinch
A second bomber falls – another staggers –it has no hope of making it back.

Kwaljien comes underneath too soon –too soon.
5 battleships, many other ships hammer away –and the sky is thick with a million bright colours.
But now the bombers show their grit, show that men from burnt texas plains, from Kansas wheatfields, from new york boroughs – can fight too –and the bombs fall.

A single bomb hit –and dismay shatters 47th’s efforts –a single bright tower of flame –square in the middle of Hiyo’s already listing, shattered flight deck……………..
