I'm looking for a site that offers downloads or online viewing of high resolution maps.

(mostly interested in WW1 and 2)

FWIW, I'm talking about copies of maps that were issued/used, not ones that depict a certain battle afterwords.

So far, I've found that the library of congress has some interesting ones covering the Normandy invasion and 12th Army Group in the Ardennes that they offer online and for free download.

Anyone know of another site that offers this kind of thing?

(preferably free)

http://www.ima-usa.com/index.php/cPath/1_51

This site sells actual silk escape maps from the time period (and going into the 50's), that were given to pilots in case they crash-landed in enemy territory.

Google up "Perry Castaneda" (University of Texas). They have all sorts of excellent maps, including the one that you linked our readers to. IMO, the best of them are contour maps from an Army survey done in 1954.

McMaster University in Canada has an excellent collection of WW1 military maps of the Western Front. They are high resolution and viewable online.

Index of 1:5,000 to 1:40,000 scale military maps

http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/ndx5to40.htm

Index of 1:100,000 scale military maps

http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/ndx100.htm

The website also features WW1 aerial photographs of the same areas.

A cross post from another forum:

An excellent map of the Russian situation just before the German attack.
