Anyone have an idea of just what the differences are in the radars in the game?

Not 100% accurate, and may not be the same thing in-game...

Type 271- Brit Surface (ships)
Type 279 - Brit Air/gunlaying (ships)

SCR 270 - US Air (ground mobile/non-air transportable)
CXAM - US Surface (ship)
CPS-1 - US Not sure, but think it was an Air/Gunlaying radar (ship/sub/ground/air transportable)
SC - US surface (ships/subs)
SJ- US surface (sub)
SG - US surface/nav (ships/subs)

Type 13 - Japanese Air (ship/sub/ground use/experimental 41/operational Mar43 )
Type 21 - Japanese Air/Surface (ship/Aug43)
Type 22 - Japanese Air/Surface/Gunlaying (ships/subs/ Sept 44)

Aircraft Radar

H2S - Allied ground mapping Nav/Bombing
H2X - improved H2S
OBOE - precision Bombing/Nav system
AI Mk IV - Brit air/air radar
AI Mk VII - Brit air/air radar
AI MK X - Brit air/air radar

Radars missing include aircraft ASV surface search, early SD air warning (non-directional) and PPI radars for the subs.
SCR 270 - US Air (ground mobile)
FYI - I have found that it can't be carried by air transport.

Yah, it came in 4-5 great big vans, not sure if that's counting the arrays or not.

Thanks, I'll change the list...

Yes - that was one of those 'this is brilliant' moments for me. I airlifted a base unit to PM, but it left a small residue that wouldn't go. Look to see what it is, and it's the two SCR270's. I then shipped them in by APD. Really good - amused me a lot!

Would ground based radar give a chance for more aircraft to intercept incoming raids?

I believe the manual discusses this, but I'll paraphrase from memory... Surface radars have a chance of increasing the detection level of enemy ships. This makes the enemy easier to target accurately during a surface battle, particularly at night when detection levels are extremely low.

Air radar has a chance at giving early warning of an incoming strike, allowing more CAP planes to get to the right altitude and giving them a better chance of getting in a good fight before the strike reaches its target.

Regards,

- Erik

Ok thanks Eric, one more question on a similar note: As base forces grow will they add radar equipment?

I know Japanese were using Radar in October 1942, at battle of Santa Cruz. Zuikaku picked up location of American TF. The SG (centimetric) was supposed to be the best available in 1942. The SC (metric) not as good.

I've seen base forces that start without radar add radar units as they grow. SG is definitely the best US Surface Radar available for '42. Once you get the Fletcher-class DDs and combine them in a TF with some of the SG-equipped CLs and a BB or two, the difference is pretty impressive vs. the SC or non-radar equipped ships.

Regards,

- Erik
