Hi All-

I've been lurking for a while in anticipation of buying AE when it came out. I have a question about the historical first turn option and how it relates to the allied surprise option. Does the historical first turn assume allied surprise, or should I turn both on if I would like a historical first turn versus the AI? Thanks in advance for your responses.

For the maximum level of badness for the Allies, turn both options ON.

Historical First Turn - Means all the TF moves and air missions flown historically on Day 1 are flown and player can not alter them

1st turn Surprise - added damage effects to "sim" Allied unpreparedness...

Turning Historical off means player can change unit orders for the first turn...but could potentially lose Magic move if certain preformed TF are altered...IIRC these are denoted with an *

Turning surprise off means the Allies may actually have some CAP up...among other things.

Thanks for the quick response. What type of results should one expect with allied surprise on vs. off?

Something to try as the Allies.  Suprise ON, Historical OFF.  But change nothing East of Wake (as PH is the "suprise attack", the warning will travel across the Pacific faster than the sun, so allow yourself a limited number of "reactions", growing in number as you move farther West.)   Probably keeps you from losing POW/Repulse before they historically left Singapore harbor.

Just something for some variety for your second start.

Not sure what is "typical," but with both on, I just lost 4 BBs at Pearl on turn 1 with a fifth probably a goner. Maryland took a critical hit from a midget sub before the sun even came up. Oh, and the island of Oahu also sank.
