Initial Impressions:

I'm really, really liking the game so far. The visuals are GREAT. No more cookie-cutter air bombing graphics, the subs look awesome (underwater instead of appearing on the surface like in stock), airplanes look great and somewhat more to scale, apparently landing forces don't incur mysterious casualties when there is no enemy opposition in the hex, air combat is much more dramatic (planes running out of ammo, guns jamming, controls becoming unresponsive, aborting with engine problems, etc), messages appear when bombers hit aircraft/runway/facilities at a base just like when you bomb ships, FOW is more realistic during air strikes, intelligence gathering is more varied and more detailed messages are displayed, aerial bombs and torpedoes have duds, the aircraft database has a MUCH better and more realistic list of planes, the Allies don't get screwed out of late war goodies (3 diff flavors of Tigercat; day fighter, night fighter, photo recon version, the USS Midway, Twin Mustang and P-80 Shooting Star, just for a couple examples), ships are redone amazingly as well, the map looks awesome with more bases, off-map movement, of course the new map scaling, hex side stuff, terrain types, etc.

Dec 8th, assessment of the Allied situation in the Pacific Theater:

Our intelligence analysts have underestimated the Japanese badly, and they are a far more serious and capable threat than previously believed.

The loss and damage to naval assets in Malaya and Pearl Harbor have dealt a crippling blow to Allied plans. With damaged ships and aircraft at Pearl Harbor and the Prince of Wales and Repulse sunk, our ability to stop the enemy in the Phillippines and Malaya has been compromised.

In addition our aircraft are not performing as well as we have hoped, either in defeating enemy planes or causing damage to his land and naval forces.

Our forces are widely dispersed and defending a huge amount of land and sea. As the saying goes, he who defends everywhere defends nowhere, and we must decide where to defend until we can go on the offensive. Our aircraft are in many cases obsolete and our troops, sailors, and pilots often of inferior quality to the enemy.

The situation in each area:

CONUS and Canada:

We do not expect significant enemy threat to the United States or Canada at this time. Numerous ground units, ships, and aircraft assigned to front line commands will need to be moved along with the need to establish supply routes to island bases.

North Pacific:

Not an immediate priority but defenses in this area must not be neglected. Assets in this command may be redeployed to other theaters as necessary, but not at this time.

Central Pacific and Hawaii:

Wake Island is expected to be attacked, reinforcements should be dispatched if the enemy does not take the base in an initial assault. Pearl Harbor is full of damaged ships and aircraft, and must be built up as a supply dump. Midway's defenses should be augmented as well and it would make a useful submarine base.

South Pacific and New Guinea:

This region is of vital importance as the Japanese must not be allowed to isolate Australia from the United States. Airbases and ports must be developed as quickly as possible and a system for supplying the multitude of islands put in place. Port Moresby and Milne Bay in particular should be reinforced as soon as possible before the Japanese can put long range bombers in position to threaten supply routes.

Australia and New Zealand:

The N. coast of Australia is potentially vulnerable to attack and possibly invasion and must be built up.

The Phillippines:

Need to be taken by Japanese in order to safeguard their convoy routes to and from the resources of the Dutch East Indies. Chances of reinforcing at present time are not good, and air and naval units can be put in good use elsewhere. As far as ground units are concerned, engineer units of all types should recieve first priority in any evacuation. The remaining ground units will be useful in delaying the enemy while we consolidate our positions.

Dutch East Indies:

With the various economic embargoes against Japan in place, and the lack of Japanese natural resources, taking the DEI is vital for Japan and we should expect a major effort here once Malaya and the Phillippines are taken. We should concentrate our forces and fight a delaying action here, slowly pulling out valuable aircraft, engineer units, and ships when possible.

Malaya:

With the loss of Force Z and the effect of Japanese air power in the region, we expect Malaya to eventually fall though Singapore may perhaps be held for some time as supplies permit.

India and Burma:

We need to establish a defensive line and preferably a defense in depth. The Burma Road needs to be kept open if possible. Priorities are to fortify and expand bases and redeploy our forces in accordance.

China:

Chinese forces are numerous, but of poor quality. This is not the highest priority theater but on the other hand, we must not allow the enemy to achieve a major victory in the region.

Soon I hope to start getting down to brass tacks - am reading the manual but finding some of it rather confusing. Ahh well, that's why I am playing the Allies - can afford to make some mistakes early on!!

Don't worry, not procrastinating, but as anybody knows the first turn takes a LONG FREAKIN' TIME. Especially if like me, you don't really know what the hell you are doing apart from a vague idea like "Gee, I really need stuff to defend this base with...oh look, there's a understrength rifle platoon, a squadron of 2 Wirraways, and a leaky rowboat I can move them in... "

As of now Australia, New Guinea, Malaya, and the Phillippines are sorted out which leaves the DEI, Hawaii and Central Pacific, SWPac, South Pac, North Pac, CONUS/Canada and CBI...

The most unexpected thing that's happened in my AI vs. AI game thus far is that on December 17, Emperor Hirohito arrived at Portland, Oregon, via mini-sub. He unilaterally declares he is calling off the war and would like to meet Phyllis Diller or Ingrid Bergman, preferably the latter.

OKay, I won't post anything else about Emperor Hirohito's trip to Portland, but I must say that his knowledge of something called the "spread offense" has the football coach at Portland State University most excited.  How in the world did you ever come up with that for the AI?

All right, sorry...any-hoo...

Hawaii, W. Coast, Burma/India now done. DEI, China, NorthPac, S Pac, and Canada to go.

Sorry so slow, and my AAR isn't all that exciting right now, but am trying to get my head around all the new stuff, esp. about logistics, port size, unloading, etc.

Well, I misplaced my original notes on the first few things I had done but I'm going to try to muddle through nonetheless.

For those of you who haven't been to any of my AAR's (though this is only 2nd one) I have a bit different format from the usual.

Half the reason I do them is it helps me think about what I'm doing to write/type up stuff, and secondly, reading combat reports with about two lines of text about operations can be a bit tedious. With my AAR's I do post reports BUT my usual style is to list, in some detail, my orders and actions first, then a brief summary of the highlights of the combat phase of the turn, and finally the reports, so people can see them if they want to, and if not, I put them at the end so you don't have to scroll through them to get to the other stuff.

However, if you're here to watch somebody really good at WITP open a can of whoopass, you should probably venture elsewhere, as I only got the original WITP game a few months ago...so, it may not be that instructive if that's what you're looking for. Though on the other hand I welcome anyone saavy at this to jump on and tell me I'm an idiot for doing that, as long as you tell me WHY I'm an idiot for doing that. So..constructive criticisms, comments, discussion, questions, just saying hello, people being goofy, pictures of scantily clad beautiful women, etc, are all welcome here.

Sorry it took so long to get the first turn out, been busy, spent a lot of time reading thru the manual (maybe by 1944 I will have stuff figured out? ) etc. but in the future turns should be out at a reasonable rate.

So anyway, pull up a chair, grab a beverage of choice and here we go:

Allied Orders 12/8/41

Okay...so I listed what I was trying to do in an earlier post and then I realized in AE I can't do half of it, so I pretty much had to throw half my ideas overboard...so yeah, disregard most of that, shall we?

W. Coast and Hawaii:

PH damaged ships sorted out, damage ships stood down and ordered to appropriate repair facilities.

Got numerous supply, troop, and tanker convoys all heading from West Coast to Hawaii. The vast majority are traveling with 2-4 DD's for ASW protection. Once everything gets to Pearl Harbor it will then be reorganized, with the big tankers and x-type ships going back to the West Coast ports, to Australia, and the smaller/more navalized types sending supplies, troops, and fuel to the frontlines. ASW patrols have been set up from Alaska to California and around Hawaii, and arcs adjusted accordingly.

I didn't send anything out from Hawaii as I didn't know if KB was going to stick around, so no point losing troops/supplies at sea.

N. Pacific:

Set up a small 1 ship convoy from Anchorage to send supplies to Dutch Harbor, and had the USN base at DH begin work on port expansion.

S. Pacific:

Not much done here as of yet aside from ordering base expansion where I have engineers present and fortification building at Makin. Once KB is out of the Hawaiian area, and even moreso when my convoys arrive from the USA, I'm going to start sending out reinforcements (with priority to engineer units, especially naval support types) to get the US-Oz supply line up and running.

SW Pacific/Australia:

I'm working on building up Port Moresby right from the get-go. Empire flying boats are airlifting in the 13th RAAF Base Force from Cairns, and the TK and xAP at the base I sent back to Australia. As for Oz itself I'm pulling in all the shipping into Sydney (may be innefficient at first but it's easier to get things organized when they aren't all over the place, in addition with the Japanese subs better to collect all the suitable escort ships I can there as well) Plans are for 14th RAAF, 1st RAAF and the 6th RAN Base Forces being sent to PM ASAP.

Dutch East Indies:

Every base with tankers is sending them to Perth with fuel as soon as they are loaded. All other non-combat ships going there as well. In Java, I'm concentrating everything (LCU's, combat ships, airplanes) in Batavia and Soerbaja, the latter having a massive surplus of aviation support.

Malaya:

Everyone is pulling back to Singapore - no point in trying to hold and getting cut off or chopped up piecemeal. Ships are heading to India via Andamans, to live to fight another day. Replacements are set to off and I withdrew some Hudsons in Khota Baru that were due to be pulled out.

CBI:

Haven't done a lot here except ordering prelim. work on building fortifications and facilities along the Chittagong-Ledo axis, which is where I am going to set up my main line of resistance, and fortifying the other bases where I have ground units. In China all I did really was turn off industry repairs and LCU replacements so not to suck up supplies, not really sure what to do here except see what the enemy is up to first and not burn up supply points...in Hong Kong I sent all the ships out except the PT's, they probably won't make it but better than scuttled in the port, at any rate. The planes at Hong Kong were scheduled for withdraw and I went ahead and did so.

Phillippines:

Everybody on Luzon is heading to Bataan, replacements for ships and planes set to off, and despite changing the HQ of 3 of my B-17 groups to the SWPAC USAAF air command HQ (forget which one it is), somehow I can't move them where I want to...non-combat ships ordered to flee to Darwin. If I send them out they might get sunk, if I leave them in port they will DEFINITELY get sunk.

Combat phase, summary and comments:

Good news and bad news about KB:

The good: No repeat strike on Pearl Harbor.

The bad: I forgot about CA Indianapolis and her compliment of minesweepers. The cruiser was hit and sunk by enemy aircraft near Hawaii.

Some other ships lost in/near the PI to air attacks (LBA and CVL Baby KB) as they tried to escape, 2 ships hit by mines in Manila while leaving the harbor, 1 xAK reported lost to mines.

A British destroyer squadron engaged a BB, CA, and DD force near Khota Baru, 3 DD's lost but as a (very) small consolation an enemy destroyer suffered heavy damage.

Japanese capture Khota Baru and Makin.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Installed the patch today. Will be playing WITHOUT restart, but with the database changes. I waited 3 weeks to get the first turn up so I shouldn't make y'all have to suffer through Dec. 7th all over again.

Any of you guys try to mess with allied ship conversions yet? Quite a few options and not quite sure what I need or how much of it. The only thing I could think of now that would be really handy is some APD's to move small base force type units around, but I really want to make an effort against enemy subs and small convoys (due to port size restrictions) and hunter killer TF's mean lots of escorts. DE's would be ideal for this but I have *two* (2) DE's right now in the entire Pacific Theater.

Pacific Fleet Repairs:

Pearl Harbor on 12/8

Damaged ships 1 day later:

If FLT dmg repairs keep going at current rate I shouldn't lose any ships. That's a very good thing, needless to say.

Orders for 12/9/41

1/AVG and some aviation support to Rangoon. Mostly consolidating ships this turn, esp in India, Burma, and Australia. Pulled out a few Chinese bomber units that needed withdrawing in Changsha.

Combat:

US carrier TF hit Wake invasion force, sinking one ship, damaging several others, and killing embarked troops. Coastal guns and land-based Wildcats contribute to damage as well. Unfortunately only 1 AMC sunk outright but some ships were hit by torps and multiple 1000lb bombs, so perhaps they won't survive. Time to pull out next turn as KB has been spotted NW of Hawaii, moving west.

Unfortunately LRCAP from buffaloes in Georgetown were unable to prevent unescorted enemy bombers from sinking some ships trying to escape, but they inflicted some casualties on the flyboys, at least.

Japanese troops unloading in the usual places.

And now the reports:

Sbaytf: hope I don't sound rude, but shouldn't you open your own AAR for that? No prob if you want to compare your first turn results to mine on my thread, but could you summarize it instead of posting the whole combat report file?

Thanks,

88.

Okay...something is driving me effin' nuts.

Namely, KB just WON'T GO AWAY. Last turn I saw it had split up and the carriers were merged with AO (obviously refuelling) and I was worried for my CV TF's, Lex heading back from Wake and Big E near Midway. Both TF's (CV/AO, and escorts) were said heading west (not north, not northwest, but due west) I set Lex to detour south then swing back to PH, but Enterprise was too close to comfort, the only thing to do really was order her due W. toward Wake and then try to have her follow Lex's route, but I'm worried about fuel, not to mention KB. I put all my Wildcats on 100% CAP just in case, and all my PH long-range planes, even the PBY's, to naval attack (not to damage the KB but just in case, I thought maybe a strike would force KB to send up Zeroes and spend mission points otherwise allocated to airstrikes.

Carriers hit Midway and with my PH planes on naval attack, KB moving west, and the Catalinas (set to a narrow S-SE search arc) at Midway seriously disrupted/damaged by the bombing, I've now lost contact with KB.

So here's my options:

Engage KB - virtual suicide since I'd be heavily outnumbered.

Head south/southwest towards Johnston - I'd be moving perpendicular to KB's course and I want to open the range, not close it. Seems risky.

Head west towards Wake - this might keep me out of range, but eventually I'm going to be running low on fuel (not much of that at Wake) and hope I can, once they are clear, send out an AO TF from Pearl to refuel.

Any thoughts? Am I kinda screwed here? Anybody have a similar issue in one of their games

This is one thing about the game that seriously annoys me. Sure the PH raid was a stunning tactical success but even Yamamoto considered it a risky venture and the Japanese did not assume they would automatically have surprise. In addition the carriers didn't have fuel to stick around for days, IIRC. The whole point of a raid is to sneak in, do as much damage as possible, and get out - not mount sustained operations.

Reports, and rest of turn shortly.
