My question is about game mechanics, i think have been some change in that. If it is possible to attack a specific LCU, would an AA regiment still fire even if that Regiment has light weapons?

The "fixed" CD gun positions defending Oahu were on the southern or western approaches because those were the only possible amphibious landing sites.  The North Shore is a surfing Mecca because of the gigantic waves that develop there; no sane invasion commander would attempt a landing in that kind of surf.  I can see some mobile batteries covering the smallish bays but that would be about it; any serious invasion would have to attempt landing on a south or west facing beach, right into the teeth of the defense.

It does seem that the Manila Bay area was probably the heaviest defended location in the Pacific prior to the war beginning.  Watching a 14" disappearing gun operate was no doubt an awesome experience...

From a long, long time ago in this thread I brought out an annoying issue from vanilla WitP:

quote:

2. It was mentioned earlier, but I think it would make a lot more sense for an individual squad type to simply 'upgrade' to a new unit type rather than have to have the new squad type built. You are not replacing the men, only getting them new(er) weapons. I can not imagine that the US in 1944 had a hard time getting the existing marine squads newer weapons, flamethrowers, bazookas, ect. The real strain was for actual marines, not their personal, squad/platoon equipment. In the current system (as far as I understand it correctly), you need to replace existing Marine 41 Squads with Marine 44 Squads. The device built squads logically represent replacing total lost units; replacing both the men (limited) and the equipment (not limited). This would obviously not apply to devise driven equipment like artillery, AAA, tanks, ect.

quote:

Just did some quick numbers all based on Stock, Scenario 15 to prove my point. Obviously all these values and dates are going to change w/ AE, but if left unchanged, the problem will still exist.

The last version of the USMC Rifle and Engineer Squads show up in December of 1943 (again this is stock). If you assume that both the 5th and 6th Marine Divisions which arrive after that point use the most current squad types, that means that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Marine Divisions will need to upgrade to the new squad types. Stock TO&E puts a full strength Marine division at 297 rifle and 121 engineer squads. The build rate for Dec 43 Marine rifle squad is 54, and for Dec 43 Marine Engineer squad is 21.

That means that it will take 23 MONTHS TO UPDATE THE CURRENT MARINE DIVISIONS TO THE NEW TYPE!!! And this is assuming no losses during this time. They will all complete upgrading right before the war ends.

Math - 4 Marine divisions
297 Rifle * 4 = 1188 rifle squads / 54 rifle squads/month = 22 months
121 Engineer * 4 = 484 engineer squads / 21 engineer squads/month = 23 months

As I stated above, that does not make sense. This makes sense if you were rebuilding four full strength Marine divisions. But all you are doing is issuing new weapons, not new men. This is obviously not the case with devise driven material such as tanks, AAA guns, CD guns, artillery and so on.

Marines were limited. Thier small arms were not.

Now, I cant find it anymore, but about a year later it was stated that this in affect had made the cut for AE. My understanding is that in AE when a squad upgrades, the 'old' squad device type is returned to the pool, but upgraded to the newer model.

In other words, you finally get enough USMC Squads to upgrade the 1st Marine Division to the 1943 squad from the 1941 squad. In vanilla, all those 1941 squads would just go back to the pool and be useless. My understanding is that in AE, those 1941 squads would return to the pool, and then upgrade to 1943 types. So in theory, the next day, the 2nd Marine Division would also be able to upgrade.

Did this make the final cut?

Thanks in advance

Chad

Great news! Thanks for the reply Kereguelen.

A couple of things had been mentioned that they did not make the cut, so I am glad that this critical (atleast I think so) element did.

If a modder decides to start with allied bases in Indochina, how the game engine will react considering rule 8.8 ?

Just a question out my curiousity: How are the composition and upgrades handled for the USMC Defense Battalions?   There were a handfull of these units during the war and their initial compositions varied.  Also in late 1944, many were radically reconstituted into AAA units, with the unit's big guns being sent to Corps artillery units, and with tanks and infantry dispersed to USMC divisions as replacements.   Has this been modeled?  (My interest is keen because my dad was in the 9th DB.  He was sent back to the states in 12/44)   Thanks.

Kurt

p.s. I am greatly anticipating and enjoying the new, more extensive OOB. Thanks for your great effort.

All the US Marine Corps Defense Battalions that served in the Pacific are in the game.

They start the game with a mix of infantry, machine guns, AA and CD guns. Each battalion is equipped with the type of CD gun it had when the war broke out (it varies widely -- 3-4-5-6 and 7" guns, and some old 155s.) Eventually they all upgrade to modern 155s.

The basic defense battalion has 20 squads. Some battalions had an extra 1 (or, in one case, 2,) companies -- they start with an extra 10 squads per company. A few defense battalions had a tank platoon attached. They start off with 5 M2A4 tanks, which will upgrade to M3 Stuart light tanks. The extra squads and tanks are not included in the TO&E, so if they are lost in combat, or through attrition, you can't replace them.

In 1944 all but two of the defense battalions 'upgrade' to AA battalions, built around the wonderfully versatile 90mm (DP) gun. It is a triple-threat weapon: good in the AA, bombardment, and coastal defense role.

The 9th USMC Defense Battalion arrives in October 1942, in the Eastern US, commanded by Col. Nimmer. It has a tank platoon attached.

Blackhorse,
Thank you for the work you've done on this. What you've described is what I had hoped to see in the game.. I have a book on the 9th that shows its official TO&E. I presume the 40mm Bofers and 20mm AA guns have also been included. The 9th got a Navy unit citation for its shooting accuracy with those 90mm. Dad complained about the way the Army used the battalion's tank platoon on New Georgia. It's too bad they can't be replaced once lost in the game. Dad's boot was done at Parris Island. They shipped to the Pacific through Panama, reaching Guadalcanal in the last week of November, I think. Thanks again for all your work on this. (big smiles)

Kurt

Yep. The Oerlikons (20mm) and Bofors (40mm) are both part of the upgraded TO&E, along with the 90mm.

That's great information, Brad.  Thanks for sharing it.   I know my dad's unit, the 9th DB was first attached to the 1st Division at Guadalcanal, getting a Presidential Unit Citation along with the Division for its work in the Solomons.  Their job was to defend the coast area protecting the new fighter strip just east of Henderson Field.  Dad reported they once got a shot at a Jap sub.  One of his personal duties was guarding Adm. Haley's tent, when he came to visit.  When the unit left the island, they exchanged their old, worn 155's for brand new ones from a newly arrived army unit.   Then they were attached to an army corps (XIV) command for New Georgia.  Dad was in the battalion band, which was reserve infantry, but somehow he ended up in the first wave on Rendova, a tasking order screw up.  On Rendova, their AAA shot down 13 Jap planes with only 88 rounds of ammo in a single raid, considered a 'world record' for AA effeciency. Their 155s were used to shoot across the narrow strait to Munda.  The 9th tanks, along with those of the 10th and 11th DBs helped the army breakthrough the Japanese defensive line to end the campaign.  Then in 1944, they became part of the 1st Provisional Brigade, III Amphibious Corps for the Guam attack.  After Guam was captured, dad was sent on a number of patrols into the jungle.  As the 'property sgt', he upgunned his patrol by giving them Thompsons, very effective in the jungle.  He left Guam for the states in the fall of 1944, arriving in San Fran. on New Years Eve.  There is a plaque to the 9th at Parris Island. Just one guy's story.  Hope it wsan't boring.  Thanks again for the info.

Kurt

I apologize if this has been asked before, but how do antiaircraft units help in land defense , or rather do they help in any direct way ?

No late war British Cruiser tanks - once the Comet Cruiser was issued, it is unlikely the crews would have been asked to revert to M4's of any flavour given that the Comet was probably the best late war tank in its class.

Additionally no late war British Infantry tanks, Brits used tanks in 2 clearly defined roles, unlike the US Army that used used Tank Destroyers in the role that the Brits used 'Cruisers', using the slower, more heavily armoured infantry tanks in support of the infantry.

The British cruiser tanks were highly unreliable. Britain did not have a mass automotive industry, and didn't design civilian vehicles for off-road use. Hence their tanks were a pile of junk.

Not entirely true Herwin.

The Comet/Challenger and just post war Centurion were all good tanks

It took them a while to get there but eventually they were producing good AFV's

Question about the ground combat.

I'm in guadalcanal scenario. So far I had no problems keeping the japanese at bay in the trail between PM and Buna, the australian 30th brigade giving the japanese troops trying to avance to Port Moresby a rough time.

But suddenly, I find out that the japanese have moved into PM. the Yokotama Tai (infantry unit) and Horii Group (HQ) have moved in there, while the 144th infantry regiment, one engineer regiment and one artillery unit are still fighting my australian unit in the trail between PM and Buna.

It is August 26 1942, so I doubt any flanking through the northern hex has happened, so the Yokotama tai and Horii group must have moved through the hex the 30th australian brigade is defending...I have to assume that the hexside between PM and the 30th brigade is allied, and so the japanese shouldn't have reached PM...

I thought that couldn't happen?. Am I wrong, and missed something in the land mechanics?

The Marine Defense Battalion on Midway at the start of the campaign game has too many heavy CD guns.  There's a battery of 7" CD guns shown on the TO&E for that unit, and IIRC there's also 12 5" guns too.

Also Singapore Fortress is shown to have 15" guns but no 8" guns; weren't some of the smaller ones moved to other islands after the Japanese captured the base?

I haven't looked at that scenario...however if units from both sides start the scenario in the same hex...then neither side is given control of any of the hexsides in the hex.

This could be what happened in this situation.

One of the Japanese Infantry regiments in Korea...I cannot recall the name at the moment (at the office)...has 108 5.5 guns instead of squads...

I keep seeing 3325 in my recollection...but I could be wrong...I'll double check this evening unless someone beats me to it.

We used to say that nothing could beat a Chieftain if it happened to break down in a good firing position. The problem was neither the protection or the fire control; the power train was underengineered. Back when I was working on my math PhD--the one I didn't complete--I learned about English power train engineering excellence. Diane and I bought an Austin America (a.k.a. the 'gumdrop'). It was cheap, and the transmission wore out every 14000 miles. The third time we had to rebuild it, we bought an Audi.

True story: after I bailed out on the math PhD and went to work for TRW, we lived in Redondo Beach, just south of Watts. One hot July day we decided to drive the gumdrop up to Mount Wilson. Coming back, it started back-firing, and we back-fired our way through Watts. Not a good place to be doing that! When we took the car in to find out what had happened, the mechanic discovered the glue that held the points on the rotor had melted. Apparently the English engineers who designed the gumdrop hadn't realised how high or hot the conditions were that it would have to deal with in North America.

The British Army is currently afflicted with a shortage of helicopters in Afghanistan. The ones the British Government bought for them can't deal with the heat or the altitude.

My point? The Comet, Challenger, and Centurion all had under-engineered power trains. Sure they were good tanks, as long as they broke down in a good firing position.

For those who may not have read the thread "Where's My Radar"; there is a database typo that gives the wrong availability data for the SCR-270 radar (Device ID 1191).
