Status: offline 		Well, my parents where on board with getting me this game until they saw the $100 price tag...

Being a teenager who relies on my parents to get me these wargames how am I suppose to convince my parents to pay $100 for this?

With the sale only being for original WitP owners, I'm dead in the water.

How many games have they bought you in the past 6 months? How long do you play a computer game before it's shelved? You should try to compromise when it comes to the price tag.

Status: offline 		Have your folks buy you the discounted original right now. Then wait a few months, play some WiTP, start saving some cash, then buy AE with the WiTP owner discount before the three month period ends.

Being 16, I have no idea where I could work, but I'm going to have to look because to be honest I hate relying on other people even if they are my parents. I agree with JJAX on this one.I do all my chores for free, so a real-Job is the only way.

EDIT:Donkey_roxor may have something there.I can see if I can get the original....

If your parents were onboard with it before knowing it was more than a typical game they must have been willing to contribute something...

Anyway, at 16 there should be no lack of various jobs you can get to make a little cash.

Status: offline 		V22, when I was your age I had a summer job with the Youth Conservation Corps here in Illinois...uh, unfortuately, it seems that your state, already a pioneer in being lame by criminalizing hedgehog ownership, has an age minimum of 18 for the CCC. That's a shame, since I think it was a pretty good experience for me.

That being said, even with the recession, there are probably a few horrific teenager-oriented jobs around in sunny California. It's commendable you'd rather your parents didn't pay for the game, and the good news is, even the worst minimum-wage job you can find should easily give you enough scratch to buy AE in no time flat.

Really? So how much do they charge you for your clothing, room and board? Wait till it's your turn to pay for those things, and your kids claim they do their chores for free.

A good way to earn money fast is to ask your dad if you can use the lawn mower to go around the neighborhood and mow lawns for $10.00 or $20.00 each. If enough people need their lawns mowed, you'll have all the money you need in one day, but no doubt within a week for sure if you're determined about finding customers for your offered services.

Start off with $20.00 per lawn (front yard and back), but be willing to drop that price if they initially balk. After all, if they are listening to you, they might be interested, so deal and bargain, don't just give up the first time they say no thanks.

But getting a regular job at your age will mean you have a lot more freedom in your final years living at home. If you save most of your money, you may even be able to afford your first car by the time college rolls around.

This is going to come off as very mean spirited but these are lessons in life that you need to take forward with you as you grow into an adult. You get nothing for nothing. You don't get what you can't afford. Saving for something makes you appreciate the thing more. If having the game means that much too you, you will find a way to obtain it sooner or later. It is very unbecoming to whine about something this trivial as a game. Get some cajones kid.

Good luck in your life's journey (I mean it).

Now I had better duck for cover as the flak comes my way.

I was a little harsh. Honestly, my parents bought me my fair share of games when I lived with them. Maybe I am a little cranky because now I have to buy my own games and pay my own bills .

Status: offline 		I delivered newspapers for four years, starting in 6th grade. When I was done, I had $0 save. I spent every penny I earned on models and wargames. It was the only spending money I had, we were poor so my parents weren't going to kick in anything.

Status: offline 		Well....my mom agreed if my dad would pay half, I pay whatever I have in my wallet, and mom will pay for any difference.....so fingers crossed if my dad agrees. After going through all this trouble, I can never ask for a game from my parents as long as I live.....better start read the newspaper for a job.

If you don't own the original WITP, have you at least played it? What it's "worth" depends on who you are. If you have played and loved WITP (quite a commitment), then $100 for AE is not too crazy. But if you haven't, how can you be sure this is what you want?

Actually, I see from another thread that you have played WPO. Same principle applies, I guess: are you "madly in love" with it?

(That being said, $100 is a lot of money, even for a Matrix wargame.)

Status: offline 		Well War Plan Orange was a great game, but that lack of aircraft and aircraft carriers kind of annoyed.Plus I didn't know much about WPO's time frame so half the time I didn't know what to put what with what.I figured WitP should be a much more fun game because I can re-create the battles I know about, and thats during WWII.The problem with WPO is what I said above was the lack of air power and air carriers.It was basicly WitP sea and land-only style.

Status: offline 		I don't know where your going to find a job most places, given that KMart is full of adults trying to get even 15 hours a week to pay their bills. You should see if there is a lawnmower you can borrow and go around offering to cut lawns for $15-20. I'd start by asking your friend's parents, that's how I did it as a kid. Some really cheap bastards are going to insist that you rake the cut grass, so tell them in advance it's another $10 for that. That's kind of low, but do a few lawns and you've got it down. After you do the job once and they're happy, tell them you'll come back every weekend until Labor Day.

Also, if they balk, get up real early on a scorching hot weekend morning and say "Gee, I'm 16 and full of energy, are you *sure* you want to cut the grass on this 100 degree day, Mr. Jones?" :)

On the other hand, if you want to be slick, ask that your mom or dad drive you around for hours and hours on the weekend as you look for a job, since I assume you live in the burbs and everything is too far to bike. They'll get so sick of driving you around, and then realize they'll probably have to drive you 2-3 times a week at least even if you do find a job, they'll buy you the game.

Status: offline 		at your age, I helped a local supermarket filling the store shelfs. I was responsible for the beverages like Coke, Sprite, Water & Beer. 3 times a week for 3 hours per working day. loan was 6 later 7 DEM/hour.

think about it.

Or I delivered the daily news paper here in our neighborehood. they payed 110 DEM per month but if you were good you got some tip extra

Status: offline 		Personally V22 Osprey, I am impressed that a young man your age has the interest (and not to mention intellect in today's low attention span world) to seek out and play a complex and very long strategy game like WitP & AE. That doesn't seem typical of most teenagers today.

Kudos to you, there may be hope for the coming generation.

Parents agreed, I will take advantage of sale and get vanilla WitP tomorrow.Then in mid-August, Mom and dad agreed to get me Admiral's Edition with the $20 discount.

Status: offline 		I very highly second the lawn mowing idea, even though you've got the game on the way now, if you want some extra money!  A friend and I did that when we were 15/16 over a summer, and made an absolute KILLING- all you need is a lawn mower and way to get to your lawns (hint: shoot for your own neighborhood), and if you have a trimmer and edger you can add that on for a little extra as well.  We'd charge $15-20 for lawn mowing, and add on $5 for the extra stuff (this was 1998 or so, gas was dirt cheap), worked about 3 days a week and would go home with $20's just falling out of our pockets.  This is one seriously easy way to make money without signing over any of your time to a "real job".

Of course, I blew every bit of it on games
