Truely disappointing for me to load UV and on the Tutorial I press the Z Key and the system locks. I have a TNT2 Ultra with the Latest Dentonator XP Driver from NVIDIA, a Sounblaster Live with that latest Drive, Windows 98SE all patched to date with 128meg memory and a Soyo Motherboard along with a Western Digital Hardrive and a Mirosoft IntelliMouse.

I have stopped my Virus Scanner and all other utiliies other than Zone Alarm which is the Firewall for my Cable Modem.

Please advise, this really sick when I read all the stuff on the forum about what to do then the game still crashes.

Victor,

Give us a break, we have to sleep too. ;)

It certainly sounds like your system is up to date. Assuming you've checked through the FAQ on this forum for any additional ideas you may not have tried, my advice would be to try cranking down the hardware acceleration for your card. See if that helps for the moment.

We've got a few other folks who have also reported issues with instability while zooming the map. We're trying to find out what's causing this and fix it, but we don't have a definite solution yet. Some of the bug fixes implemented in the first patch may help, though.

In the meantime try varying your hardware acceleration, disabling and re-enabling your sound card, updating your mouse driver and disabling any unusual mouse features. Finally, try to avoid using the Z key, unless the zoomed map is a necessity for you. Personally, I almost always play on the normal scale map and I think most people do that as well. If the normal scale map doesn't crash for you, stick with it for now.

Regards,

- Erik

Sorry Erik for waking you up. I did get the game to stop locking up by not using the Z key nor the Zoom button. I want to try another test to see if the game will work when I have Zone Alarm running.

By the way is there a dump file or something I can email you to help track down this bug?

;)

I have tested tha Tutorial Scenario with Zone Alarm Running and everything appears to work other than the Zoom. I didn't even try to use the Z key or the button at the top. As a matter of fact I am scared to even put the mouse cursor on the zoom button even if I don't click it.

My System Config is as follows:

Soyo 6BA+ IV-2AA2 Motherboard
Award BIOS v4.51PG
128MB Ram
Pentium III 550
Diamond Viper V770 AGP Riva TNT2 Pro 32MB - running NVIDIA's lastest Detonator XP Driver
Creative 32X CD-Rom
Creative SB Live - running lastest driver
Western Digital 10GB ATA33 & 6GB ATA33 Hard-Drives - FAT32
1.4 Floppy Drive
AIWA Bolt Tape backup
IIyama a901ht Vision Master Pro 450
Linksys LNE 100TXv4
MS Intellimouse Explorer - v4.0
Canon BJ200
APC Back UPS-Pro 500 v1.0.2
Altec Lansing Speakers
Win98 SE - Patched to latest version
DirectX 8.1 SDK
I.E. 5.50.4807.2300
Resolution is set to 32 Bit Color 1024 by 768

Whenever I run the game I shut down my Virus San which is McAfee's Latest Version v4.5.1 SPI with Scan Engine 4.1.60.

I leave my firewall running which is Zone Alarm v2.6.362.

I tested the game with the above in 3 modes:

First, with Full Hardware Acceleration, the game locked up shortly after I pressed the Z key and scrolled to the right. The music played for a second or so and stopped.

Second, with Hardware Acceleration decreased by one notch, the same results as the first test.

Third, with Hardware Acceleration decreased by 2 notches, everything worked as I would expect. No lockup, I could zoom in and out and scroll around the map. The only odd thing was the first load bar that comes up shifted the entire screen to grey then back to the regular view of the bar, then went on to the next phase of loading.

Frankly, no one should have to reset their system's Hardware Acceleration settings to get the game to run correctly.

Hi Victor

Directx does have some issues with some hardware and the way around with from Microsoft is to turn off Hardware Acceleration.

You should also try turning off your firewall just to see if that helps.

I have given your specs to Keith and we will see what he comes up with.

I should have added that I did test with the firewall on and off and it made no difference in the results.
