Man, I had two crusier/destroyer task forces in the eastern PNG area and a task force in the Sulu Sea lead by Prince of Wales. PoW encountered Kongo on the way to attack Jolo where a large IJN invasion force was gathering.

Also completely smashed were several invasion forces near Jolo Island and Madang, both before and after unloading. It was a solid beating. My only regret is that apparently Prince of Wales was out of bigger shells by the time it was pounced by an IJN Cruiser Squadron.

I'd try to hit his amphib TF unloading at Finschhaven today, but I think I'm out of ammo!

You cannot afford to do assaults without strong covering forces... just like in the real war.

yeah, but at Medang there were 23 out of 23 ships sunk that have been within a couple of different TFs at a MAX visibility of 1000 yards? With no moonlight? Heck, that´s overkill and even though I know we shouldn´t quote single results, there are already far too many of those results posted. This should be a RARE occasion. So rare, that people can´t come up with such results daily.

23 out of 23 ships sunk with nearly no sight at all.

while bloddy air to air combat seems to have been cured in AE, now naval combat is what air combat was before. In WITP you see a dozen Corsairs taking out whole strikes with dozens of enemy aircraft shot down, now we see the we kill 100% of your ships regularly it seems.

Point blank range: mostly hits with devastating effect
Many warships that may all fire at the same time on different targets
"is getting underway" means they were sitting all together makeing no speed

No problem for me.

Admiral Hipper sank 7 merchants out of 18 meeting one convoi that was underway and not surprised.

Warships have searchlights and illumination granades. Moreover both sides may now take out whole fleets. GREAT!

I HATED it, when I managed to find 30 merchants with 8 warships and apart from 3-5 that were sunk, the rest ran away...

indeed nice results. one more point which speaks for AE.

what i like to know now is the following question:

do we see this famous WITP "50 bomber attacking one lonley transporter" idiocy also in AE or do we need to set HRs to avoid exploiting the weakness of the engine like in WITP?

in my game vs garry i had it again in the last turn. 60 betty/nells attacked out of tarawa island and managed to sink....2 laughable APD while his damaged BB and transport fleet remained untouched.

Yeah, it helps that ships can actually sink immediately as a result of air combat. I hated in WitP where a CV TF would use up flight ops launching 50 Hellcats, 30 Helldivers, and 30 Avengers or so against a PC or minelayer that had just been pasted with multiple torpedoes and 1000 lb bombs and all planes would be "unable to locate target"...

And some nice SCTF butt kickin' there, Thunar...

I think these results are about right.

An amphib TF would be totally vulnerable, grouped together, and unable to retreat from naval forces because they are blocked by the beach. Even if visibility is only 1000m, the attacking force has many scouting DD's which are also armed, and they are facing no opposition. Things like searchlights and star-shells could illuminate the transports, and at close range they won't last long against large caliber weapons. Moreover, any that do escape would likely be found easily if the attacking destroyers formed into a search pattern to look for approaching or fleeing ships, which would be logical.

AK's and AP's were relatively easy to sink before, but 80% of any large force always slipped away even though the attacking force was much faster. This is an appropriate correction to that, especially for a stationary transport group.

you don't need moonlight when you're only 1000 yards away and transports all around you are frantically weighing anchor...

Doesn't the Houston or one of the other two light cruisers I used have some kind of radar? I kind of doubt the PBs/PCs/AKs I encountered at Madang had a radar set.

I did send the SCTF to Madang, it wasn't a reaction, and Madang does have a rudimentary port which is on a map. So when they arrived at a pre-existing port that is on their nautical charts, there was the IJN, it's not reflected in the Combat Report I think but they were all in the middle of unloading and it took quite a bit of time before they were able to get underway. In fact during the animation that's exactly what it read "TF trying to get underway". I think I sunk more than half of the ships at anchor.

Now if Transport Group with no warship support to speak of is caught in the middle of the night, in the middle of unloading, by 3 cruisers and a few destroyers that operate at speeds almost 3x faster than an AK or AP, I would be outraged if they didn't send them all or almost all of them to Davey Jones' Locker.

You know I've played this game for 30-40 hours and I'm only at Dec 20th?

I took the wife out for dinner last night so I could play all night till 3AM today.

I think I mentioned this in another thread under the main forum, but the day before this amazing series of actions, I had sent a CA and 3-4 DM/DMS TF to Rabaul at night, hoping to do a little bombardment. My TF bumped into a couple of APs/AKs guarded by I think one IJN Cruiser and a TB or two, and the TF was not in the process of unloading, just hanging out in the roadstead I think. My CA got it's head handed to it and about half my destroyers have some substantial damage. I think I only lightly bruised one of the Jap TBs. In fact my CA probably won't make Noumea or the East Coast of Oz.

So having a screen for Transport TFs looks like a smart idea...

I just had an ABDA force made up of about every CL I could find (British, Dutch, American, NZ and Aussie) plus a mixed bag of DD's, jump a Japanese landing and covering force at Jolo.  The AAR indicated that the Allied ships spotted them at 27000 yds at night and sneaked in to within 2000 yds, surprising the covering force.  Both Suzuya and Mogami were sunk and several DD's damaged, in exchange for Houston taking a beating from shellfire and some other minor hits on other ships.  I did notice that the IJN ships continued firing at my ships even after the range had opened to 27000 yds as the two TF's broke off.  The transports and their escorts were also sunk in later engagements.

Then the BB's showed up, presumably just after sunrise.  Mutsu and Yamashiro, plus two more CA's and escorting DD's, showed up, and got within 7000 yds before my TF could get out of there.  Even then none of my ships were sunk, although several of the CL's are shot up somewhat and are heading south for repairs.

At Wake Island the same thing happened to my resupply TF that other players have reported; a 2 BB TF hit them on their first night after arrival, and a full brigade landed and crushed the defenses right after that.

Yeah, the Guards Mixed Brigade (all 11,000 of them) descends on Wake if you repel the initial assault. I left some CAs and DDs from the American CV escort groups at Wake and they got trounced by the pair of Japanese BBs far more quickly than I would have thought.

A little while ago in the Guadalcanal scenario, my US force of 2 BB, 4 CA, 8 DD surprises a Japanese TF of 1 E, 1 PB, 2 xAK while unloading.

The xAK are promptly sunk, the PB takes a beating, but the friggin´ escort ship - the Oite - survives the nearly undivided attention of of task force including two modern battleships throughout most of a long night battle, all the while firing merrily at said battleships and even scoring a completely ineffective hit on one of them.

Bottom line: 2 xAK sunk, 1 PB severely damaged, 1 E lightly damaged - I think the damn thing took all of a single 5" shell in the whole battle.
And for me? I lose one DD that is rammed, first by one battleship, then by the other, and finally by one of the cruisers. Another DD is crippled (40 major floatation damage, 40 major engine damage), two cruisers and a third destroyer come home with less severe damage from collisions.

This is great. Just bleeping great. I don´t need the damn Japs. My navy can get itself sunk without an enemy.

That's the problem:

From reports from the various Guadacanal battles, radar had a hell of a problem distinguishes shapes from island landmasses (i.e. Savo Island). That was last half of '42.

So late '41, Jap landing force in Madang, which is described thusly:
quote:

Madang Province consists of reef-fringed lowlands backed by some of the most rugged mountains in Papua New Guinea and offshore volcanic islands.

So at night, the US radar is so GOOD it can pick out EVERY ship against a jungle/mountain background from 30,000 yds (17 miles), plus IJN lookouts spot them at 24,000 yds, 13 miles, and cannot get underway in the 30 minutes+ as an amphibious TF?

The closest that in real history of the time, that these invasion intercepts occured is the Battle of Balikpapan, where a quartet of US four-stackers surprised the Japanese invasion force - they sank 3 of 12 transport and 1 PB. It seems the Yanks spotted them at under 6 miles, visually:

It seems either spotting logic is flawed for coastal hexes, or radar vastly overpowered.

In my ABDA battle at Jolo one of the transports ran over an escort while my cruisers were shooting at their TF.  Both of them later sank...

It's funny to read "XXX collides with YYY" as long as it isn't your ships doing the colliding...

Yeah, I agree.

I think people are forgetting in the air power drenched Pacific just how dangerous a heavy cruiser was to unescorted merchant shipping.

Thats a whole taskforce there, multiple ships, that found a totally unescorted convoy at point blank range moored up. If there wasn't massacre there'd be something wrong.

Especially annoying when it was a bunch of AK's that would have to "tie down the safties" on thier boilers to make 10 knots "running away" from warships that didn't even need to light off all their boilers to do 25 knts. Dump trucks can't run away from Corvettes.

It's funny to read "XXX collides with YYY" as long as it isn't your ships doing the colliding...

But if it is, the enjoyment is rather limited. One particular USN admiral is currently serving a 400 year sentence of reform through labor (hammering out the dents in the armor plates of USS Washington) for incompetence during a night battle. The skippers of several warships are keeping him company.
