I'm sure this has been done before on the forums here, but in the spirit of this new game, what are your favorite PTO movies? I haven't seen one in a long time, I'd like to know the best list to watch a few.

Midway is awesome, as is Letters from Iwo Jima. I haven't seen it in a while, but MacArthur was a good movie too.

Tora Tora Tora is a classic. Its great to watch that and then watch Midway. Plus Midway includes the battle of the Coral Sea.

Just for fun there is Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne. Not historically accurate, but lots of fun.

Here's a not so complete list of movies in rough chronological order with brief synopsis.

Torpedo Run - an under-appreciated submarine film starring Glenn Ford and Ernest Borgnine
The Bridge on the River Kwai - The classic PoW film that earned Alec Guiness an Oscar

Report from the Aleutians - Great documentary about the boys in the North
To the Shores of Iwo Jima - Fine film on the epic battle
The Fighting Lady - THE movie that provides all the great battle footage in nearly every other movie. Filmed aboard USS Yorktown (CV 10).
Victory at Sea (TV Series) - 'Nuff Said!
Crusade in the Pacific (TV Series) - an average series on the fight in the Pacific

*****Addedum*****
Here Comes the Navy - Though not a WW2 PTO movie per se, this James Cagney movie would be of particular interest. It was shot on board the USS Arizona and therefore a nice time capsule of life aboard a battlewagon in the mid 1930s.

One recent Japanese movie missing (Kamikaze unit):

Ore wa, kimi no tame ni koso shini ni iku (For Those We Love)

BTW, what is the name of the B&W movie about USN carrier airforce (in the movie the main actor looses his legs in an acident before the WWII but serves in important roles on the bridge and in HQ duing the war)?

I knew I would remember it... it was John Wayne movie (and also missing from the list):

The Wings of Eagles

Yes, I erred in the omission of the Spig Wead bio-pic. I was not aware of For Those We Love, but I do now and have located a copy!

Both of the movies you noted are now on the list.

Thank you for the kind words in your previous post.

A few more that could be added to the list:

Away All Boats - Jeff Chandler as captain of an APA
Mister Roberts - Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon, James Cagney on Navy stores ship
The Gallant Hours - James Cagney as Bill Halsey during the Solomons campaign
The Wackiest Ship in the Army - Jack Lemmon in command of an old sailing ship with incompetent crew.

Run Silent, Run Deep is only a so-so submarine film, but because Don Rickles is one of the crew, I bump it up to the second scariest horror movie of all time-- the thought of 2 months on a submarine with Don Rickles... oh the horror...the horror...

The Japanese movie about the cut off and abandonded soldiers on Luzon who turn to cannibalism...one of the greatest movies of any kind ever made....circa 1950, -51? What is the title?

The Island, terrific list! Reminds me that I've seen many of those (but the memories are dim), on Saturday afternoon movies on TV, growing up.

Is it too much to ask you (or anyone) to add a 1-5 rating on those??
