Well Rob and I are at it again - this time no house rules, and the only non-normal settings would be auto expand and replacements is off and PDU is on.

We decide to allow the Historic Turn to go as I for one like to watch things go boom in PH -- its about the best Day for the Japanese in the entire game..

I was impressed during the turn with the number of torps and 800kg bombs used and thought I would have an awesome PH strike - but only 1 BB sunk along with some smaller ships. Makes me wonder how long some of the other BBs will be out of operation or if intel is hiding their sinkings from me. I was also surprised that my planes faced no Allied CAP - I think this is the first ever PH attack without some token CAP.

Philippines & Area:

My baby CV found some ships in Davao port on turn one and sunk an xAKL while damaging 1 AVD and another xAKL.

Batan Island is invaded and captured !

Dec 8th, 1941 -- Day Two

Preview:

WOW... I am looking at the scale of the game and I am staggered. A lot is familiar but China is a mess - I have no clue what to do with China or the Economy so I will not touch them for a few turns and just concentrate on slowly building up to speed with the game again.

I continue with the pre-planned invasions and mostly adjust some ship locations, supplies and air units and send the turn back to Rob.

Execution:

Mostly air attacks on both sides and continued landings by my troops. A dull and quick turn.

2 IJN xAKs sink from allied bombing damage the day before - both at Khota Bharu.

I do manage to invade and capture Makin ! At this rate it will be '43 before I take everything I want.

Dec 9th, 1941 -- Day Three

Preview:

Turn 2 was slow, so I am picking up the pace. I am rotating my air groups from attack to rest to keep fatigue and operational losses low. I am also slowly filling in the important air groups -- important to me that is - with replacement pilots and aircraft. This turn should be more exciting, I am attacking at Khota Bharu as well as landing at Tarawa, Wake, Aparri and Vigan. Last turn Wake had Marine fighters still there and I would love to catch them and destroy the unit but I have a feeling Rob pulled them out.

In support of the attack at Khota Bharu I am using all bombers in range to bomb the allied troops there, as well as providing some long range CAP over the bombardment and troop ships there.

Execution:

SS I-154 finds the CMc Pro Patria near Muntok and puts a torp into her but she survives.

Philippines & Area:

Rob has his subs sitting in the coastal hexes at Aparri and Vigan it seems - luckily my escorts see them and begin the hunt. They don't hurt the subs, but keep them away from the transports.

At Vigan 3 RN DDs appear out of nowhere and engaged the screening force of IJN DDs. In a prolonged fight all allied ships are damaged and all but 2 IJN DDs are damaged. The RN DDs Scout, Thracian and Thanet escape.

My baby CVL shrugs off an air attack by B-17s and catches 2 Allied Merchies loading fuel at Tacloban - my half squadron of Kates make short work of them and watch as bot xAKLs sink. They were caught 'transferring cargo' so I believe they were loading up fuel.

Wake Island:

The coastal guns at Wake did a good job landing numerous shells on the invasion force. Several of the PBs have raging fires but none of the ships appear to be in danger of sinking.

The invasion is a success taking nearly 3000 allied prisoners. The Wake USN CPNAB unit and the 1st Marine Defense Battalion cease to exist. As I figured, no wildcats were found on the island.

Burma:

The attack at Khota Bharu is successful causing over 7100 casualties and capturing the 8th Indian Brigade and the 3rd ISF Base Force. The FMSV Brigade retreats southwesterly.

Tarawa:

Tarawa is capture without a problem - no enemy troops present.

Xargun, did you check to see what pilots you got as replacements? I suspect it was the 35 exp pilots that are "trained"....

No I did not - but in the groups where I grabbed several I did not notice any exp drop - but maybe I just didn't notice.

Dec 10th, 1941 -- Day Four

Preview:

Last turn saw some good surface combat which reinforced my intentions to try extra hard to support my landings with combat ships. I will say one thing the game is much better about
your screening TFs reacting to enemy presence. I know feel fairly confident about 1 combat TF being able to cover several close invasion TFs. The better react ability by itself will lead to many more surface engagements in a game dominated by air vs ships. Maybe all those IJN BBs will be useful in '42 now instead of being torpedo and bomb magnets.

Execution:

The turn started off with several nigh surface engagements.

Apparently the first engagement and the sinking of the DD Ford wasn't enough so the TF came back for more and the Pillsbury went down too.

Philippines & Area:

My screening force at Aparri found SS S-40 and hammered him - reports indicate at least 1 solid hit on the sub, possibly more. Worst case the sub was driven off.

My screening force at Vigan located SS S-37 and attacked. No direct hits were reported, but the sub seems to have left.

Near Vigan a group of 3 allied PT boats tried to sneak past the screening force and was chased off. Hundreds of rounds were fire by my screening force at the 3 PTs but no hits were reported. The battle was quite long and the PTs got close but no torpedoes were seen - I was a bit surprised my ships couldn't hit the PTs at all.

Searching Betties located some allied AMs near Bataan and attacked. Both AMs were reported sunk from torpedoes.

Tarawa:

Bad news... The Tarawa invasion fleet had no combat screen and paid the price. I personally did not even know there were any allied combat ships close, but apparently there was...

Luckily the TF had finished unloading all the men and were just unloading supplies. But on the down side, I don't like losing 4 xAKLs and 1 xAK so early in the game when I think the lack of transports will be tough in '42.

Invasion troops land at Miri and avoid attacks by the dreaded Do24 Scout planes. I do remember those SOBs - hopefully I can continue to avoid them.

KB

I have not mentioned them since Day One. My normal day 2 and sometimes even day 3 actions are to continue the pounding on Pearl, but this time with the limited pilots and such I have decided to pull KB back to replace aircraft and torpedoes before going hunting again.

Overview:

With the weekend here I will jump into both China and at least the aircraft side of the economy. I will be spending some quality time figuring out my next wave of invasions and moving troops around. I also need to get a list of all resources, oil, etc... so I can help make my plans (I wish that WitP Staff program worked on my machine, but I think having XP 64 is the problem).

I also need to get some printouts of the port docking limits, the ship types, and other necessary info such as reloading rates and port size needed. Time to begin the planning of the defense so I have a year to build defenses. I also need to pick my island pickets and get some Base Forces there and construction begun. There are a lot of islands with 30k limit on men and I need to decide which ones I want to defend.

Any suggestions, questions or comments are welcome.

I have my foothold in the Philippines now and am beginning to expand ports so I can unload troops in a reasonable time frame - AE has certainly slowed down the loading / unloading -- but its a good thing I think.

I am still having trouble getting some units loaded onto ships and can't figure them out. Oh well I just want to reposition them and they are not vital to my efforts yet.

Execution:

Philippines:

An IJN Screening force of 7 DDs led by CL Nagara encountered an allied merchant TF near Legaspi and caught up to them at night. Needless to say the surface TF didn't leave the area until all the ships were sinking or sunk. Not sure if those merchies didn't have gun or not, but no IJN ships were damaged during the skirmish.

IJN ASW efforts worked well today as well as they found SS S-37 and chased her off again, this time reporting some damage inflicted.

Borneo:

The IJN Submarines make their presence known today. In several encounters they located and attacked many Allied merchies. IJN SS I-166 and I-154 were responsible for the attacks - unfortunately they are both heading home as they have expended all torpedoes.

Scouts over Burma reported ships in Georgetown Harbor so I thought I would take a chance and raid it. I know there are ships in Singapore, but with the lack of escorts I don't want to risk my naval bombers. So Georgetown it was. All of the allied ships attacked were loading cargo of some sort.

Overview:

I am completely convinced now that surface combat in AE is 500% better and bloodier than WitP ever was. Time and time again I see warships aggressively engaging both enemy merchants and warships. Warships seem to fight several rounds and then flee eventually - but merchies seem to just flounder in the water and die. I'm not a very good historian but it makes sense to me - why would a warship ever stop pursuing a fat juicy merchant ship (without other orders) until she was a burning hulk or sinking ? It looks like the problem from WitP has been fixed... Word of advice - escort the merchies if they are traveling near enemy action - or else you will lose them.

We sunk 2 allied TKs and damaged 3 more - which will probably sink - this turn. I think I have done a good job putting a dent into the allied TK ability in and around the Philippines. Perhaps Manila will have a nice amount of fuel for me when I capture it.

Im going to watch this AR. I plan on just playing the Japanese in AE.
Im going to print out the AE manual today and start reading it.

Do you regret not hitting Pearl in the 2nd day? I think I would and hopefully put some
more Battleships on the bottom.

maybe aye maybe naw there is a limit to how many torps in KB day 2 is doable for at least one more heavy strike but it will exhaust most of your on hand torpedos (assuming day 1 was a torp heavy strike)

That makes you vulnerable to an ambush on th eway home by Enterprise and Lexington

Using all Torps on PH = bad thing IF you are forced to fight before replenshing - if one of the strikes is bomb only then a day 2 strike becomes more credible

Like I said I normally stick around for a 2nd and have even done a 3rd day air raid on PH to crush US assets - but this time my first strike saw no CAP and did a good job with 800kg and torpedoes despite only 1 ship sunk. Being how AE is going to be a lot different than previous WitP games I thought I would be conservative on Pearl and simply retreat. Besides, I figured more ships sank and were hidden by FOW, but so far nothing has been reported. Oh well, either way a mauled the surface fleet and it will cost him months of a full shipyard to return those BBs to active duty - which also prevents him from repairing other ships as they get damaged.

The ambush by US CVs on the way home was not a thought - Rob is sometimes careless with his CVs, but I don't think anyone is silly enough to engage the KB Death Star on its way back from Pearl, unless they spent several days there and were low on planes. Without some good luck the only thing I think the allies would gain by attempting to engage KB at this time would be a couple less CVs to worry about fueling.

Alright. I am back home from an unexpected trip and will be posting a bunch of AARs when I get home from work today. But a brief overview...

China

China is a nightmare. There are Chinese and Japanese units all over the place. I have yet to have enough time to sit down and make an organized plan here but have noticed at least 1 'dot' base that has resources. Hmm - interesting. I will definately need to add that location to my Empire and keep an eye out for more.

I have done some small landings and taken 2 chinese bases - Pakhoi and the other one near it are now mine. I will most likely pick up the unit and land it to to help the push on Nanning.

My current plan for china will be to take all of the major rails and simply reinforce them and hold as long as I can.

Hong Kong

Well for those who are playing the Japanese, make sure the troops attacking Hong Kong have been given marching orders - as mine sat still for several days before I noticed they were not moving. This delayed the capture of Hong Kong, but it has fallen and I am moving men back north to attack other parts of China. I have a TF of IJN DMSs clearing mines so I can use the Repair Yards and nice harbor.

Burma

Moving in Burma is way slow. There is a vast distance to travel with any forces you have at start and the roads there are poor. I have yet to attack any bases in Burma as my troops are simply not there yet.

Malaya

My advances here are going good with several bases under my control and troops heading south. I finally have AV Support at airfields and now have fighters (mostly Nates) flying cover for my TFs landing men and supplies.

So far my normal strategy of a day or 2 of bombarding, followed by attacks have been pushing the allies out of the bases. Especially when softened up by bombers from Thailand.

Borneo

My covering Surface fleet of several BBs and Cruisers were stupid and the invasion force at Kuching was left open and Rob crushed them. My secondary combat TF engaged his ships but little to no damage was done to either side. Definately made me mad.. From now on, the merchies will follow the combat fleets instead of the other way around.

I have captured Kuching, Miri and Brunei. The oil fields and refineries at Miri were damaged by 50% and are just no starting to repair. Not sure how much repairing I want as thats a lot of supply to use.

Japan

I have expanded the Kate factory from 0 to 8 planes and will be expanding it again to at least 16 if not 32 - most likely by the end of December. I have also noticed a literal ton of resources and oil in the northern Island - Sakhalin (sp?) and have several TFs moving it south - while enlarging the ports to make this task easier.

Philippines

I have most of the north on the main island captured and several small airfields finally going. I now have over 50+ land based fighters in the Philippines, both Zeros and Nates to protect my ports. My ships took a beating from Rob's P-40s and P-35s strafing my ships. I have lost at least 5 merchies to strafing attacks, and his subs are starting to add to that.

My ASW efforts have damaged several subs but not enough to drive them off. One of his subs got in some lucky shots at one of my CS and crippled her off Legaspi. She has made port and extinguished all the fires, but has 50+ major flooding damage and I'm afraid to have her leave port. The problem is I don't believe the major damage will ever repair until I get her to a shipyard but with that much damage she may sink enroute. Any suggestions ?

Elsewhere

Reinforcements are heading to Wake to repair the base and begin building defenses.

I have taken Kavieng and the Shortlands and will be soon moving base forces there to begin the buildup. I have spotted several Aussie TFs around the area and am not sure what plans I have to deal with them. Right now KB is sitting in Truk waiting for me to use them. I could easily pull them out and raid Port Moresby or kill a bunch of allied shipping fleeing Borneo but that will tell Rob right where the KB is allowing him to strike elsewhere. I have not seen any indication where his CVs are, but my guess is either sitting near Pearl or on there way to Australia -- I am very tempted to strike at Midway and take it.

Repair Yards

Any repair yard under size 10 is worthless. I have found several size 5 repair yards and tried to repair merchies there only to find out my merchies are too big. So expand those 5s to at least 10.. and remember repair yards only cost to expand - not to run.

Overall

I am trying to decide if I should split KB into 3 TFs of 2 CVs each and attack Port Moresby with one TF and go for Midway with the other. Midway can't be held, but I can force Rob to keep at least 1 CV near Pearl to provide CAP to take the island back or if he doesn't my Betties can sink a lot of ships there.

Port Moresby would be nice to have mostly to prevent Rob from reinforcing it and using it to control the skies over the area. I have no doubts about holding Moresby but controlling it for most of '42 would deny it to him and put him on the defensive.

As you can see I have made some good headway in the Philippines and in Malaya as well. Rob on the other hand has been successfully damaging and sinking my merchies - especially around the Philippines. I must have another 10+ merchies in repair yards or sitting idle in ports repairing some damage. The worst losses so far was the CL and DD on the 26th at Menado and the fact that he has crippled Chitose. Chitose is sitting in the Philippines hiding in port slowly repairing 1 flotation damage each turn - but she has like 50+ major flotation damage that I have no idea how I'm gonna fix this. She is a good 3-4 days from any shipyard large enough to handle her and I don't think she will survive the trip.

Well Rob and I are doing 1 or 2 turns a day and I hope to get back to my normal turn by turn posting on the AAR.

I have expanded my Kate production from 0 to 16 and will probably expand it again to 32 after the end of the year. I am also starting to move resources, oil and fuel home to Japan from China and Kwangtung. Once I secure Borneo I will being shipping out from Miri as well.

I am also finally getting the hang of the different modes for land units and learning the tricks with them like moving them along roads and such in Move mode and changing it to combat right before I attack. I know this exposes them to air attack more, but right now time is more of my enemy than his feeble air force.

Future Plans:

I have decided to take Midway. In a couple days I will be able to buy an entire Division out of Japan and plan on using parts of that for the invasion - he can't have too much sitting there. My subs are on their way to circle the island and I will bring 2 CVs from KB to support / protect the invasion.

I am also going to grab Rabaul soon too. I have troops moving to Truk and will support this attack with at least 2 CVs. This will leave me with 2 CVs and several smaller carriers. I am conteplating using my 2 other fleet CVs up around Java to support the invasions there, but not 100% sure I will need them. I would definately use them to lay a trap for Rob's CVs if I knew where they were. They are either around PH (Canton, Palmyra, etc...) or heading for Australia (don't think they could be there yet).

Oh well time will tell.

Dec 27th, 1941 through Jan 4th -- Day 21 - Day 30

China

I am slowly moving troops northward to begin pushing the chinese out of the areas I want. I have already taken a couple small bases along the coast and have a couple more to take to control the coast. I have also taken a 'dot' hex which has both resources and light industry in it - so more supplies for me and less for them.

I have yet to move any real air groups into the theater and not sure if I want to. I'm sure later I will move 'training' groups over but not many active combat groups. They will be needed elsewhere.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong harbor is free of enemy mines and ships are starting to come in to take advantage of the large repair yard for some repairs, but mostly upgrades and conversions.

Burma

As I have said movement in this theater is slow. The rail in Thailand helps, but once off that you are days away from the next base. I have finally taken Tavoy and will be sending the bulk of my troops north along the coastal road. I am also moving construction forces to Rahaeg (sp ?) as fast as I can to increase the airfield there and use it to support the drive on Rangoon. I have a small group of zeros at Rahaeg and have raided Rangoon netting a couple of allied fighters while not losing any of my own. I need more fighters up here to sweep the allies from the skies.

Malaysa

My troops are slowly moving south. The troops along the coast are getting bombed daily from allied planes in singapore and to be frank I don't want to waste the pilots and aircraft I will lose from Ops losses to offer them any cover. All I have in theater are Nates and the men along the coast are near the end of the Nates range. I am losing squads daily but they are only being disabled, so some rest and supplies will bring them back once we merge near Singapore and knock back his air power.

Another day or 2 and I will be able to attack Kuantan, Temulok and Taiping, which will allow me to move troops along the rail to catch up. Once Temulok and Taiping falls I will be able to accelerate my advance and take Kuala Lumpur and Malacca within a week. This will give me access to Singapore and force Rob to risk his units defending the last 2 coastal bases or pull them back to Singapore. Once I get the rail I will be able to move in air power and begin pounding Singapore and getting rid of his air power.

Philippines

The Philippines are slow as well but I have troops in Iba and should take that base in a day or two at most. Then I will march on Clark Field and take the airbase there. Once Clark falls Manilla and Bataan will be split and I can take whichever is smallest first. I hope he falls back to Bataan, but I think he will pick Manilla to defend - thus denying me the city.

From the south, I am moving on Mauban and Batangas and from what my recon tells me is that they are empty or lightly defended.

Borneo

The north coast of Borneo is mostly mine except for Singkawang and Sambas (Northwest corner). Those 2 bases, along with Pontianak and Sandakan will be my targets over the next week once I recon them for enemy troops.

I have landed an AF Coy at Bunguran and taken the dot hex. I plan on leaving the LCU there and build a small AF for asw efforts and then maybe a level 1 port to hide an AV in to support them.

Celebs

I have finally cleared all the mines at Manado and will be able to move on from this location.

The next landings will be at Gorontalo and Loewoek - giving me the eastern bases.

South Pacific

I have subs filtering into the Coral Sea and looking for easy targets moving men and supplies around. So far they haven't found anything. 1 Sub did find an allied CL at Tulagi and fired what must be a total of 15 torps or so at her over a couple days yet everyone of them missed

Elsewhere

My reinforcements have arrived at Wake and are working on building some forts. I have no plans to enlarge the AF (can't actually) or the port. Wake will simply become a refueling port for subs and such messing around Pearl.

More supplies have arrived at Okinawa and my repair yards there are almost fully expanded. I have several merchies and DDs sitting there being repaired from damage around the Philippines. I also have some ships undergoing upgrades there too.

In reaction to this, I have dispatched a couple CVs from Truk to the area at high speed and will attempt to bait a trap. If it works I can bag some more allied surface ships (probably DDs being led by some cruisers) or if extremely lucky, I can bag a US CV or 2.

Only worry if the flooding is higher than the heavy damage .. IE water in the ship. If the ship only has heavy damage its presumed to be pumped out and patched up. safe ish to put to sea and head for a repair dock. Go at cruise speed too, apparently helps not springing leaks
along the way. and repair as much sys damamge as you can before moving her. ( sys encompasses pumps etc.) .. and try not to get torpedoed on the way back

Ok, it is slowly repairing the flooding and should have all the 'minor' damage repaired in a couple days. Then it will move onto the other minor damages. I am going to wait until I control a few more bases (as well as pound his air power) before moving her. That way I can hop base to base until somewhere safe.

Basically I was sending 2 I-class subs around Singapore to harass the shipping I'm spotting into and out of Rangoon and for some reason they sail through Singapore and hit multiples mines - believed to be 2 each - BOOM and they both sink...

Not only did that make me mad, but then the US CVs appear south of Sorong and hammer my invasion convoy. 5 of the 7 ships were sunk outright, and the surviving 2 PBs will probably sink soon. Not only that, but he mauled the Base Force I was invading with. The BF survived and is on Sorong, but is all disabled - now I need to invade again

Couple that with a crap-tastic day at work... oh well.. I'm better now and will have my revenge. Now that I know where 3 of his CVs are it will cost him. Midway will be mine - I am already assembling the invasion force and air cover. I plan on landing a full division on it to ensure I take it quickly. Then I plan on holding it in force for a month or so to make my presence a nuisance and then retreat back to Wake - so when he brings in force there won't be anything there to kill.

I raced my IJN CV TF towards the escape route of the US CV but they are faster and I wasn't quite in position yet. If he had waited 1 more day I would have pounced and sunk the CV.

This day goes about the same for my subs - many more targets and all misses.

Bombing raids in China and Malaysa eat up supply and slowly wear away at the allied defenders.

An IJN xAK is caught unloading at Kuching by some Swordfish bombers that sneaked through my Cap. the xAK was hit by multiple bombs and quickly sank.

I landed an JAAF AF Coy at Puerto Princessa last turn and captured it this turn forcing the Philippine Base Force to flee into the jungle.

IJN I-2 starts the turn by putting a pair of torps into the xAK Ohioan crippling her - I think she sunk, but no reports so far.

More bombing raids against chinese troops further weaken them. RAF and IJA planes bomb each other in Burma and Malaysa scoring hits on both sides.

Another Zero sweep into Rangoon scores 3 Buffalos downed. My zeros are really getting good numbers against the fighters at Rangoon.

IJN Surface Combatants show up and bombard Beaufort to weaken the enemy troops -- this is just the first such bombardment in the days to come.

A Shock attack at Temuloh is repulsed, but forts are lowered and more losses are inflicted then recieved. The defense is weakening

IJA Tank Regiments (2nd & 7th) push allied troops out of Cabanatuan furthering our Imperial plans for Luzon.

Jan 9th, 1942 -- Day 35

More IJN Warship bombard Singkawang catching some allied non-combat troops in the open as well as damaging the runway. The second rounds of bombarding hammers the troops and craters the runways.

The IJN TF that hit Beaufort last turn hammers it again before sailing off.

My 2 Subs heading to interdict shipping near Rangoon ran through Singapore and had an accident or 2...

Only 2 PBs survived the air raid - 1 may live if not attacked again but the other is helpless.
Several hundred troops from a Base Force are now stranded on Sorong and all disabled. I will need to send in more troops to rescue them once the CVs clear the area.

My troops attack Batangas and push the defenders out capturing it - 1 more base falls in Luzon.

Attacks at both Taiping and Temuloh are both repulsed but the allied troops defending them are weakening quickly.

More Naval bombardment - this time at Dadjangas to support the landings there. Allied troops were caught unprepared and suffered.
Another IJN TF hammered Sambas catching both men in the open and 1 Do-24 plane on the runway.

I-166, loitering off Soerbaja, entered the war by sinking the allied ship xAKL Chengtu with torpedoes.
Not to be outdone by I-166, I-123 surfaces and hammers xAKL Halldor with gunfire leaving her burning - reported sunk later

My first antiship air raid by Nells loses 1 to enemy cap and damages the allied xAKs Havildar & Jalagopal. Reports indicate enemy vehicles were seen spilling into the waters of the port - so he is definately reinforcing Rangoon -- looks like that will be the big fight in Burma.

IJN Zeros raid over Rangoon but the allied CAP there won't engage - they must be afraid of us !!!

A failed raid on Vigan port costs the allies 1 of their few remaining P-40Es in the Philippines.

The 14th IJA Tank Regiment leads the assault on Mergui and chase the RAF Base Force out of the area inflicting heavy losses.

Ok now some Economics....

Hmm triple post again

The Tojo comes online 9-42 I believe. So I got 9 months of Oscars. They will mostly be used in Burma and DEI so that shouldn't be a problem. Saving the Zeros for special spots or direct clashes with the US.

Not only that but all of my fighters use the same engine - so changing between models won't be too bad and they all have a Service Rating of 1 - which means I'll actually keep more in the air.

Now come 43 the fighter selection gets tougher as models with armor come into play, but they are a lot harder to keep working (service rating of 3) and have less range. I guess come July or Aug 42 I'll start to make my calls for 43.

Is there an echo in here?

Those air choices look OK, but why produce the Ki-30 Ann?

Take a look at the Transports, I don't think the Mavis transport is available until 4/42. You can produce Tinas though, and on the IJA side the Tabby is still the transport of choice (although I noticed the Sally transport ain't bad compared to WITP)
