Summary of Operations 1/13/44 Admiral's Edition is out! I will have to get my copy and begin test driving it. I'll also test drive AE a little more throughly than I did with WitP before taking on a live opponent. I played the AI in WitP stock once through mid-1943 before taking on Pillager - had absolutely no experience with CHS, just installed and immediately began playing. Having seen a how a game system works at least once before going into a match vs a live opponent can be helpful in increasing the confidence level of your decisions and planning. Having this knowledge does provide a bit more insight into what the capabilities of both Allied and Japanese forces in the game really are - what things (ships, planes, etc) can and cannot do in different situations, how what you have can best be used, what your opponent can (or cannot) do with what he has, and so on. The same could also be said about trying out different types of operations vs the AI before attempting them against a live opponent - my amphibious operation on Pago Pago in this game being the first one I attempted in WitP against either the AI or a live opponent. If this were show business, I skipped all the rehearsals and went straight into opening night (do not pass GO, do not collect $200). Some of the end results did not surprise. Not developing a sufficient level of experience with the game before playing it is a disadvantage, a self-inflicted one. A word to the rookies... try out the frying pan before leaping into the fire. You might actually play the game better once you get into "live action". Stepping off the soapbox and on to today's news from the front.... North Pacific: Jap recon flight over Attu. US and Canadian air force bombers strike Jap base at Paramushiro Jima. AAR follows. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Paramushiro Jima , at 82,33 Japanese aircraft A6M2-N Rufe x 8 A6M5 Zeke x 5 Allied aircraft Ventura G.R.Mk V x 3 B-17E Fortress x 12 PB4Y Liberator x 12 B-24D Liberator x 12 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2-N Rufe: 8 damaged A6M5 Zeke: 5 damaged Allied aircraft losses Ventura G.R.Mk V: 3 damaged B-17E Fortress: 1 damaged PB4Y Liberator: 3 damaged B-24D Liberator: 1 damaged Japanese ground losses: 38 casualties reported Guns lost 1 Airbase hits 4 Airbase supply hits 6 Runway hits 16 Aircraft Attacking: 6 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet 6 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 3 x Ventura G.R.Mk V bombing at 3000 feet 3 x PB4Y Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet 4 x PB4Y Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 3 x PB4Y Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet 3 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet 2 x PB4Y Liberator bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detected status of Jap base in Paramushiro - 2 Jap TF's, airfield damage 20, 20 aircraft (10 fighters), 4 Jap LCU's. Central Pacific: U.S. submarines report very light to no Jap air patrol activity, nearly all spotted Jap patrol flights were off the Japanese home islands. SS Barb near Sasebo torpedoes and sinks Jap AP. SS Growler reports contact with a Jap TF off Tsu. AAR's of both actions follow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack at 57,44 (SW of Sasebo) Japanese Ships AP Mitsuki Maru, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage (confirmed sunk) Allied Ships SS Barb -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack at 63,45 (off Tsu) Japanese Ships AP Santos Maru PC Wakamiya DD Nenohi Allied Ships SS Growler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 252 ships detected in port at Tokyo. 32 ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base. SS Nautilus reported sunk off Jaluit after contacts with one or more Jap TF(s). AAR's follow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 83,88 Japanese Ships DD Naganami DD Takanami DD Akizuki CL Agano Allied Ships SS Nautilus -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack at 83,88 Japanese Ships DD Akigumo DD Karukaya DD Kuretake Allied Ships SS Nautilus, hits 6, on fire (confirmed sunk) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 83,88 Japanese Ships DD Kiyonami DD Hayanami DD Fujinami DD Susuzuki CV Zuikaku Allied Ships SS Nautilus, hits 2, heavy damage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 83,88 Japanese Ships DD Tamanami DD Kazegumo DD Yugumo DD Wakazuki Allied Ships SS Nautilus, heavy damage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What had not been expected is the appearance of CV Zuikaku in this location - this would suggest that Pillager does not have all Jap carriers operating as a single group (at least at this time). My opinion as of now is that the "Baby KB" (CVL's, CVE's) are responsible for the contacts and air strikes from Jap carriers in the south along the Papaete-Wellington shipping route. The main portion of the KB remaining somewhere to the north. This theory still begs the question... what is the Zuikaku doing near Kwajalein? Four U.S. subs (including Nautilus) are currently patrolling the Kwajalein area, reinforcements are now being dispatched to this area from Pearl Harbor. SS Nautilus was the only one of the four subs operating S of Kwajalein, the other three being to the north and west. F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting 6 aircraft, 15 Jap LCU's. Pago Pago, Day 118 of the Fiasco: Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is overcast. Three small Jap TF's detected in Upolu base hex. Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 83, airfield service damage 100, port damage 4 (no change). 14100 supply now on hand. Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 99, airfield service damage 100, port damage 9 (no change). Jap LBA air strikes against Pago Pago and Savaii bases, also ground attack strike against 1st Cavalry Division on Upolu.
