I have already pre-ordered, but beware that there are many at these forums that believe that 1) HOI s*cks and/or 2) pre-ordering s*cks so this thread may be in for a rant or two about these two topics

PS In case of ranting: I did get WITP:AE the day (after) it was released. Fantastic! DS

I will wait for a month or so after, maybe three to get HOI3; because Paradox is notorious for releasing buggy games which take a few patches to get "right"; plus, by that time, there will be a bunch of mods.

Nope. Too many great titles on this site both released and on the horizon. Eagle Day should be out very soon.

HoI beats every comparable WW2 grand strategy game hands down. I'm going to purchase it on release day.

A demo is due by tomorrow btw.

Nope. Nothing against Paradox in general, and I'm a big fan of Crusader Kings in particular, but IMVHO the engine just doesn't 'work' in a WW2 setting. Obviously a great many people disagree with me!

I'll try out the demo. If the AI really IS better, and I can leave it to babysit some of the domestic things while I manage the primary war front, I might be interested.

I got HOI 2 and after realizing the AI was weak beyond what words can describe, I talked to the guy who did the AI for the game and he said he was a part-timer who hardly spent any time on it.  I tried to give him some tips on improving it but he refused to acknowledge that the AI never built tanks and hardly had any soldiers either... just tons of airplanes that flitted back and forth endlessly doing nothing.   His excuse for the AI only building planes forever after France fell (very easily) was that Sealion was next... apparently for the rest of the game.  HOI2 went into the trash and I moved onto real war games.

Do I want HOI3?... I'd rather shave my head with a cheese grater and join a penal battalion.

Edited for eccentricity & a hint of eclepticism too ...

After looking at the screenies and reading up on this game... Looks like the coal
was taken and became a diamond !

Ok... I'll get it too. But 1st... I will lay out the priorities... WitP:AE is going to be
bought this coming Friday. A month later, HoI:3 !

Keep those reviews coming (...4 those of U who are gonna get it b4 me, please!).
((thanks in advance!))

I enjoyed Hoi2 quite a lot and i'm certainly interested in HOI3 (the imporvements looks great!)
But my poor old computer probably won't be able to handle it.

So i will wait 1 or 2 yeras... and by then i will have new computer and Hoi3 will have half a dozen patches, a couple of expansions, will play great and Paradox will release a "Hoi3 Complete" edition which will include all together for 19,99 euros
After some years i've learnt how to better enjoy Paradox games.... by WAITING!!
Cheers

I'll get my copy today or tomorrow.
But I have to agree to the others here: If you want to play a pradox game, wait AT LEAST to the second patch. The games are nearly always unplayable in first release and most first patches won't help too.

I'm not saying you are wrong or that your impression of the AI or the game is wrong, but it sounds like you got fooled by someone trying to claim credit.

There were 3 separate programmers on the AI , one including me, all working inhouse, and I've never seen anyone else post or chat on the internet. (And I was the guy that wrote the build AI for that game.)

Hi Johan
Nice to see you also here. It's good that you didn't leave the comments like that without the answer.

I'm sure that the Hearts of Iron III will be a great game, and I'm sure I'll have some fun playing it.
But what I really would like to see is bugfixing of the obviouss issues pointed by the community. Especially the map (as it is something what is easiest to be spotted at the screens).
I also wonder how does the regiment mechanism will work for this game, and how good will be AI commanding our units.
All will be answered soon.

I got it preordered

I will agree, there were things wrong with 1 and 2, but both were "fun" games, and many of the mods made the games more enjoyable

should be a decent game to waste some time with

I got to say, I really have enjoyed wasting some time with ToW, think a lot of people will compare it to the HOI type games and that is unfair, it is a decent game in it's own nitch

and for me, I am waiting on Eagle Day too (sooner then you think, but maybe not as soon as you would like :)

I am going to pass. The real time nature and the terrible combat sequences turn me off every time I try HOI2 or EU3. I just hate the way the units move and fight and the way the game plays.

But don't listen to me, I like hex games and love my stuff grognardy. I would take Battlefront or a good TOAW scenario or Time of Wrath over this game anyday.

HoI3 is a must buy for me.. I haven't kept up with all the info pre-release but what I've seen looks fantastic. I've probably spent more time playing various versions of HoI than any other game.

It's an easy game to criticise, often unfairly in my opinion... because considering it's scope it generally works pretty well.

That being said.. Johan, as you're here.. I hope something has been done with the Japan AI so that they don't always roll over China and, as the British player, I end up having to fend off 120 Japanese divisions in India, with the US AI doing nothing to help.. not historical, and not fun.. (especially not every.. single.. game..)

I played HOI and HOI2 and this version doesn't have any appeal for me. I look at the videos and the screenshots and it's the same game. I'm not dissing the game, I actually had fun with the first two iterations, but the system is played out for me.

Anyone know the release date? I'd heard August 4 but I went to buy it from gamersgate and it's still listed as preorder. A web search gave me dates of Aug 5, Aug 7. Best Buy says Aug 11. Anyone know the real date we can get it?

I'll wait until the general consensus on the Paradox board is that it's patched sufficiently for decent online multiplayer games.

There are different dates for different regions/countries.
IIRC there was some issue with printed manuals
