I just finished aleutians-campaign as allied vs historical AI. I won narrowly by occupying Attu and Kiska and sinking about 6 subs while losing CVE Nassau and some transports and LCT's. Things went pretty well, but I have some questions:

1. I did amphibious assaults on Attu and Kiska: I used APA's and some LCT's to transport the troops and some supplies. Was that the right option? I had some xAK and xAP, but they are slower and less firt for amph. operations, right?

2. I bombarded each island with bombardment-TF's (BB's etc.). before landing. I saw that the escorts of the amph. TF's also bombarded. Which is the better option? And cna I keep bombarding even when my tropps have landed (i.e. no danger of friendly fire)?

3. I was unable to move certain units - I wanted to transport base force from adank to kiska (after capturing it), but could not move these units onto a transport TF (with xAK's/xAP's). Did I do sth. wrong or were they 'fixed'?

Any comment or advice is welcome!

1): Correct.

2): The landing force escort only fires to suppress defences as they fire at the landing craft. You have to have bombard with a bombardment TF as well.

3): They have to be in Strategic Mode.

Did you use the "Ten Thousand mile war as reference"? And for Downfall ,  are you using Willmott's "Grave of a Dozen Schemes"?.

The book's called "The Thousand-Mile War" (the distance in air miles from Dutch Harbor to Attu). I'm not familiar with the other one (for Downfall, I have three or four different reference books).

Right , I recalled the name incorrectly off the top of my head. Garfield , I think. The "Grave of a Dozen schemes" was Willmotts final volume of his Trilogy , INcluding "Empires in the Balance" and "The Barrier and the Javelin". I thought it might be usefull to you as in goes tremendously in depth as to British planing for the last phase of the Pacific war and their virtual prostration in providing men, ships or resources for any activity.

Yeah, Churchill wanted a great many things, but the country had nothing left to give.

Ned Willmot has yet to write the third volume to the trilogy, and the truth be known, it would be impossible to do in a single volume with the detail of the first two, which go only through Midway. The "Grave" book was his PhD dissertation, written quickly to garner his appts in the US. More useful are his collections of essays and the latest excellent one on Leyte Gulf. He was notably vague when I asked him about the third volume in early '07, so I think he will just do the monographs he wants.
